WWE filed a trademark for Saturday Night Main Event, earlier this month. The trademark persuasion filed on August 11th suggests that it could be a possible move to bring the show back on TV. The name was filed under four different Goods & Services categories including items like pre-record media, graphics, and music via a global computer network and wireless devices, photos, toys, and clothing.

Saturday Night Main Event originally premiered back in 1985 on NBC network. It continued on the same channel until 1991 and then moved on FOX in 1992 only for two separate episodes. It was then brought back for five episodes on NBC starting from 2006 until 2008. It was a highly successful show that could be reason WWE might be planning to revive it.

Saturday Night Main Event Was A Tremendous Success

Saturday Night Main Event found a tremendous rating success on NBC Network that is the primary need of any WWE show. During its heyday in the 80s, it had a smooth kick-off before Monday Night Raw was even originated. That episode of Saturday Night Main Event was headlined by a battle royal that involved Hulk Hogan and André the Giant. Back at that point, these two were slated to face each other at the historic WrestleMania III main event.

Later the success of Saturday Night Main Event allowed the then World Wrestling Federation aka WWF to offer several Friday night prime time specials, known only as The Main Event. The first of the series aired on February 5, 1988, which had a WrestleMania III rematch between Hulk Hogan and André The Giant. The episode drew 33 million viewers and a 15.2 rating, which is helmed as still the highest-rated television show in American professional wrestling history.

After NBC acquired the rights to broadcast NBA games nationwide, it started to lose interest in wrestling, and Saturday Night Main Event was dropped from the programming. After April 27, 1991 episode, FOX aired the show twice on February 8, 1992, then on November 14, 1992.

After WWE’s flagship show, Monday Night Raw returned to the USA Network in 2005, Saturday Night Main Event brought back in 2006 as a “special series” as part of a deal between WWE and NBC Universal. Raw, SmackDown, and ECW roster members appeared on the show. In a prime-time slot, it continued to air between 2006 to 2008 before it got taken off TV, permanently.
