While the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is likely to host the delayed IPL 2020, the former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has named the teams who can get benefit from this tournament.
As the International Cricket Council (ICC) has just postponed the seventh edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020, which Australia would host between 18th October and 15th November 2020, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now busy to organize the 13th edition of the IPL in this window.
While India is still struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic as the numbers of COVID-19 patients are rising daily, the BCCI is considering organising the entire IPL 2020 in the UAE.
As the IPL 2020 can be scheduled between late September and early November 2020, Aakash Chopra pointed out the heat weather in the UAE. Due to having a little short period for the IPL 2020, we can experience more double-headers, and Chopra feels that it can raise the dehydration problem for the batsmen.
On his YouTube channel show Aakash Vani, Chopra claimed, “There will be no problem although they might have to fight a little bit with the heat. For now, the weather is good. Let’s be fair, UAE experiences a lot of heat. But September and October are still the pleasant months.
“The problem I am seeing is that if the IPL starts on 26 September and ends on 7 November, it is about 6 weeks including the final week of playoffs, there might be lot of double-headers with the league phase to be completed in 5 weeks. In double-headers, however pleasant it might be, it is after all the heat of the middle east. So, batsmen might get dehydrated.”
RCB I think might actually do well: Aakash Chopra on IPL 2020 in UAE
Aakash Chopra believes that Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) can get benefit if the IPL 2020 shifts in the UAE. The RCB haven’t won any IPL trophy yet but have already reached the final thrice.
Chopra said, “Batting conditions would not have much of an impact. In fact, certain teams may start feeling better. RCB for example, because when the grounds are big your bowling is not exposed that much even if it is weak. RCB I think might actually do well.”
Meanwhile, Aakash Chopra also feels that the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) can impress in the UAE, especially when their Glenn Maxwell has very good records in this country. He also thinks that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) can continue their dominance once again.
The former Indian cricketer added, “You have got teams who have a lot of good spinners, so Chennai Super Kings will once again be the super kings. Even Kings XI Punjab, the place suits them a lot as well since Maxwell plays very well there. Overall if we see, batsmen will not face much problems although they have to be careful about the heat because there will be lot of double-headers.”
Earlier, the UAE hosted the first half of the IPL 2014 due to the Indian general election.
