U19 World Cup 2020: Final – Bangladesh U19 Create History After Beating Defending Champions India U19

Bangladesh U19 created history after winning their first ICC U19 Cricket World Cup title by beating the defending champions India U19 in the final of 2020 edition by three wickets (DLS method).

Bangladesh U19 captain Akbar Ali decided to field first after winning the toss. They bowled out India U19 for 177 runs (47.2 overs). In the rain-interruption at the very late moment, Bangladesh U19 got the revised target of 170 runs in 46 overs, and they chased down that target in 42.1 overs after losing seven wickets.

Bangladesh openers Parvez Hossain Emon and Tanzid Hasan provided a strong start with the 50 runs partnership. But once that partnership was broken, the defending champions made a solid comeback in the game.

The leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi took the first four wickets and Bangladesh were suddenly fallen into deep trouble as they were fighting on 102/6 at one stage.

When they were batting on 62/2, opener Emon was retired hurt (batting on 25) due to his leg injury. But when they lost the sixth wicket on 102 runs, Emon returned with the bat though he was still feeling enough pain.

Emon put the heroic 41 runs partnership with captain Akbar Ali for the seventh wicket. Though Yashasvi Jaiswal took the wicket of Emon at his 47 runs (79 balls), Bangladesh skipper remained intact at his position.

Along with Rakibul Hasan, Akbar Ali put the 20 runs partnership for the unbroken eighth wicket as when Bangladesh were batting on 163/7 (41 overs), rain-interrupted that game. At that stage, Bangladesh U19 were winning that game by 19 runs (DLS method).

After the rain stopped soon, Bangladesh U19 got the new revised target of 170 runs in 46 overs. Bangladesh took seven more balls to chase that revised target successfully. Captain Akbar Ali remained not out on 43 runs off 77 balls, and Rakibul Hasan was batting on nine runs.

Among the Indian bowlers, Ravi Bishnoi (4/30) took four wickets, Sushant Mishra (2/25) got two wickets, and Yashasvi Jaiswal (1/15) picked up one wicket but failed to save the team.

Bangladesh bowlers were very tight from the beginning of the innings. In the seventh over, when the opener Divyansh Saxena lost his wicket for just two runs, India only managed to score nine runs. However, another opener Yashasvi Jaiswal handled that early situation very well with the next batsman Tilak Varma.

Jaiswal and Varma had the 94 runs partnership for the second wicket. But after Varma was dismissed on 38 runs, the defending champions were losing their wickets at regular intervals.

On the other hand, Jaiswal was controlling the innings from the other end before his dismissal on 88 runs off 121 balls (8 fours and only six). After his wicket, Indian batting faced massive collapse. Fighting from 156/3, the India U19 were suddenly destroyed to 177 runs. They added only 21 runs for the last six wickets. Apart from Jaiswal and Varma, only the wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel (22 runs) managed to reach the double-digit scores in that innings.

Among the Bangladesh bowlers, Avishek Das (3/40) took three wickets while Shoriful Islam (2/31) and Tanzim Hasan Sakib (2/28) bagged two wickets each. Also, Rakibul Hasan (1/29) picked up a wicket.

Both teams were unbeaten before this final. While the defending champions India U19 team reached the final by winning all the five matches of this tournament, Bangladesh U19 reached their first U19 CWC final by claiming four victories out of five matches (one had no result).
