ICC World Cup 2019: Twitter Lashes Out at Faf du Plessis for Citing IPL as Reason Behind South Africa’s Abysmal Show

On Sunday (June 23), South Africa’s ICC World Cup 2019, has come to a halt when they lost their fifth match of the ongoing ODI showpiece at Lord’s. Thus, following a premature exit from the tournament, skipper Faf du Plessis drew flak for holding the Indian Premier League (IPL) responsible regarding the Proteas horrendous show at the World Cup.

With Proteas loss by 49 runs against Pakistan, their hopes to remain alive in the coveted tournament shattered as their search to lift the first-ever World Cup title will continue until 2023.

Their World Cup standings could explain Their woeful performance. They’re sitting at ninth position with just a win under their belt in seven matches. Subsequently, they won their solitary game against an inexperienced, Afghanistan.

After making their entry at the 1992 World Cup, the Proteas further failed to qualify for the knockout fixtures post-2003. Earlier, in the twelfth edition of the World Cup, South Africa lost their first game against India. Also, they lost their next two games which eventually put pressure on a quality side from which they hardly overcame to live up to the expectations.

Soon after the loss, the former Proteas players have expressed disappointment by scathing the South African cricketers.

Meanwhile, the squad included a couple of players who are past their age. It eventually asks for an overhauling for the 13th edition of the ODI World Cup.

Recently, in his post-match press conference dejected Du Plessis has regretted to see Kagiso Rabada having a longer stint at the IPL 2019.

Pertinently, Rabada has featured in 12 matches for the Delhi Capitals (DC) before nursing a back injury. He conceded that rest was necessary for a couple of players ahead of the World Cup.

In seven matches, Rabada has managed to bag six wickets, whereas, Imran Tahir has bagged ten scalps.

Overall, du Plessis is the sixth skipper for the Proteas to lead them at the World Cup. Du Plessis also faced severe criticism for turning a blind eye following his IPL stint, too.

“So I don’t think it’s not necessarily just the IPL, but it was important for a few guys to rest; and the fact that they didn’t meant that they — you know, they came into the tournament not fresh. That’s not an excuse; that’s just a fact. And KG (Kagiso Rabada) is — you can see that his pace is probably a little bit down from where he normally is,” du Plessis said at a press conference.

Interestingly, at the same time, du Plessis himself represented Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the IPL 2019.

It didn’t sit well with the Twitter users. They further lambasted the 34-year-old for blaming IPL following their miserable run at the ICC World Cup 2019. He also received the backlash for not owning mistakes committed during the World Cup in England and Wales.

Here’s how Twittersphere reacted following Faf du Plessis’ comments regarding the IPL:
