Mumbai Indians (MI) presented an outstanding display of cricket as they topple defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 37 runs at the Wankhede Stadium. In the process, they became the first team to achieve this unique feat in the history of Indian Premier League (IPL).
Mumbai ends Chennai’s winning run
Chasing a competitive target of 171, Chennai Super Kings were never really in the hunt once Jason Behrendorff produced that scorching new ball spell on IPL debut. He struck twice while Lasith Maling picked one to have the defending champions at 33 for three. Too many early wickets meant that Kedar Jadhav and MS Dhoni had to rebuild, but the latter in particular never looked settled tonight. Once Hardik Pandya broke the partnership was broken, there wasn’t much that Jadhav could do and the game petered out to a rather dull finish. Pandya and Malinga returned with three each while Behrendorff finished with two for 22 to put a curtain on the match.
Meanwhile, batting first, Mumbai Indians managed to post 170 runs at the end of 20 overs. Deepak Chahar provided the early breakthrough dismissing Quinton de Kock while Ravindra Jadeja and Imran Tahir dismissed Rohit Sharma and Yuvraj Singh in quick succession to have them at 50 for three. Chennai Super Kings dominated the early part of the game picking early wickets but Mumbai Indians came back in the second half. An important partnership between Suryakumar Yadav and Krunal Pandya took them over the 100-run mark. Although Mumbai Indians lost two of their set batsmen back to back, unbeaten cameos from Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard got them to a good score.
Mumbai Indians create a unique record
A clinical performance by Mumbai Indians who had a collective effort with almost all the key players chipping in someway or the other. Hardik Pandya stood out though, first with that game-defining cameo and then a fiery spell with the ball.
Meanwhile, with their win over Chennai Super Kings, the Rohit Sharma-led side have completed their 100th win of this league. They are the first side to achieve this feat while Chennai Super Kings sits in the second spot with 93 victories.
