Want to be a professional cricketer?
As the future of IPL 2020 is under the dark cloud in the wake of COVID-19 or coronavirus outbreak, it is likely to hamper the last opportunity of the former Indian captain MS Dhoni’s return to the national team. However, his childhood coach Keshav Ranjan Banerjee strongly feels that Dhoni will get a final opportunity to wear the blue jersey in the upcoming T20 World Cup, even if the IPL 2020 fails to happen.
Since the heartbreaking semi-final defeat against New Zealand in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 on 10th July 2019, MS Dhoni hasn’t played a cricket match yet. Though there is no confirmation about Dhoni’s international cricket future, some of his close sources have claimed that the former Indian captain still wants to serve for India.
Meanwhile, the Indian Head Coach Ravi Shastri has also hinted that Dhoni’s performance in the IPL 2020 can bring back him to India’s T20I side.
So, there is still a chance where Dhoni can represent India in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020, which Australia will host between 18th October and 15th November 2020.
As a Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, Dhoni already started his practice for the IPL 2020 before the novel coronavirus has forced to stop the practice session.
Now while the future of IPL 2020 is seriously doubtful, it can hamper the last opportunity of Dhoni’s return to the Indian team. However, Keshav Ranjan Banerjee’s sixth sense is telling a different story.
Banerjee told PTI, “In the current scenario, IPL looks unlikely and we will have to wait for BCCI’s call. His (Dhoni’s) position will become tough obviously. But my sixth sense says he will get a chance in the T20 World Cup, which will be his last.”
Banerjee has also claimed that Dhoni is fully fit at the present moment.
The coach added, “I spoke to him last after he returned from Chennai and I’m in constant touch with his parents. He’s doing his fitness training and is fully fit. Now let’s wait for the BCCI’s decision. There’s no tournament. ICC tournaments are off till June. So we will have to wait and see.”
MS Dhoni is fully fit and trained in Chennai for a week or so
While Banerjee has agreed with the reality of Dhoni’s absence from the game since last July, he has also pointed out Dhoni’s immense experiences that make him widely different than others.
The coach believes that the BCCI and the team management will think about Dhoni during the team selection of the forthcoming T20 World Cup.
Banerjee claimed, “True that he has not played a tournament (since July 2019) but for someone with 538 International matches, I don’t think it would take much time to adjust. It would have been a different scenario for a beginner. But it’s not the case with Dhoni he has got a wealth of experience. I think he will get a last chance.
“He is fully fit and trained in Chennai for a week or so. Now everything is closed in Ranchi, earlier he would train at the JSCA. But now he’s confined at home and making use of the facilities at home. He has a gym, a badminton court, and a running corridor. I’m sure BCCI (president, selectors, captain) are aware of the scenario. They will make the announcement when it’s the right time.”
India haven’t played a single match in the T20 World Cup history without MS Dhoni.
