MS Dhoni Has to Perform in IPL For India Comeback: BCCI Official

Former India captain MS Dhoni has not played an international match ever since India’s exit at the 2019 World Cup tournament in England. Since then, he made himself unavailable for the team selection and his future in the Indian national cricket team has not been confirmed yet.

India head coach Ravi Shastri and the national selectors have since then given mixed remarks on Dhoni’s future. Previously, former chairman of selectors MSK Prasad told that the team management has moved on from Dhoni.

On the contrary, Shastri still believes that Dhoni has still got a lot of cricket left in him. Shastri added that Dhoni needs to make a bold statement with the bat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to ready for national team selection.

Meanwhile, the addition of two new members, including the chairman, in the national selection committee has not changed the panel’s opinion on Dhoni, who will have to perform in the thirteenth edition of the IPL for T20 World Cup selection, a top BCCI official on the condition of anonymity told news agency PTI.

The newly-appointed Sunil Joshi-led selection panel met for the first time in Ahmedabad on Sunday for a board meeting – to pick a squad for the three-match ODI series against South Africa beginning in Dharamshala at HPCA Stadium on March 12, Thursday.

“It was a pretty straightforward selection meeting and since Dhoni was obviously not in the reckoning this time (for South Africa series), there was no formal talk about his future. He will be back in the reckoning only if he has a good IPL. And why only him, there are so many senior and young players who will play in the IPL. If they do well, they are ought to be considered too. So, you could see some surprise inclusions,” the official said.

MS Dhoni will be next seen in action when he leads three-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings against defending champions and four-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians in the cash-rich tournament opener at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on March 29, Sunday.
