During the recently concluded ODI series against the host Windies, Kohli smashed back-to-back two centuries. His batting performances hugely helped India to win the three-match ODI series by 2-0. Kohli won the Player of the Series award after finishing this series as the leading run-scorer. He scored 234 runs (120 and 114*) in that series with an average of 234.00.
The second most ODI centurion Kohli has already hit 43 ODI centuries. He is just six ODI centuries away to touch the record-holder Sachin Tendulkar who hit 49 centuries in ODI career.
Kohli’s batting has impressed the former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly has claimed that he is always ready to enjoy Kohli’s batting. The former Indian captain strongly feels that Kohli will leave everyone behind.
Ganguly wrote in TOI, “I stayed up till 3 am watching him (Kohli) get those hundreds and that sums up his world-class stature, which is getting better every day. I have a strong feeling that he will leave everyone behind.”
Shreyas Iyer should ideally bat at No.4 – Sourav Ganguly
The 24-year-old Shreyas Iyer also impressed in the recently concluded ODI series in West Indies. Iyer was the third most run-scorer in that series as he scored 136 runs in two innings with an average of 68.00. The right-handed batsman scored 65 and 71 runs respectively in that series. During that series, Iyer played a crucial role in the middle-order batting.
Sourav Ganguly feels that Iyer can end India’s no.4 batting position issue as he believes that it is the ideal position for Iyer.
Ganguly added, “I saw him (Iyer) closely playing for Delhi Capitals but what I saw in these two innings is a lot better. The quality is hugely noticeable and hopefully as he will watch his champion captain more, he will start converting those good knocks into hundreds. He should ideally bat at No.4. He must understand that it is a position which the greats have made their own with big performances and that is what the Indian public will start expecting from him.”
The former Indian captain pointed out Windies’ major issues
India has continued their dominant cricket against Windies in the ongoing tour. At first, India whitewashed the Caribbean side in the three-match T20I series (3-0). Recently, India won the three-match ODI series against the host side Windies by the 2-0 margin.
Ganguly has pointed out the significant issues which the Windies side is currently facing. The former Indian captain feels that the massive lack of awareness and the ability to react to tough situations with solidity are the major issues for this Windies team.
Ganguly claimed, “The Indian domination over West Indies continues and it has for some period now. The performance in the World Cup and also in this home series just goes on to prove that whatever little hope West Indies had raised after the English tour of West Indies was just a one-off. When I look at these boys and their captain Holder, you realise that they hugely lack game awareness and the ability to react to tough situations with solidity.”
India will now play the two-match Test series against the home team Windies from 22nd August. This series will be the first Test series for both Windies and India in the 2019-21 ICC World Test Championship.
