Virat Kohli, the skipper of India National Cricket Team and Royal Challengers Bangalore, is the most successful batsman in the history of the Indian Premier League. The Delhi-born, however, has been representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore ever since his first season in the IPL and it is only a matter of wonder as to why he wasn’t picked by the Delhi Daredevils franchise in the 2008 IPL auction.

Virat Kohli had led team India to an Under 19 World Cup victory in 2008 and had become a big name in the Indian cricket circuit with his performances with the National Under 19 team and the State team in domestic cricket. After 12 years of the cash-rich league have now passed, it has now been revealed as to why Virat was neglected by his home franchise in 2008.

Former IPL COO Sunder Raman has explained that DD did not want another batsman in their team and opted to get a bowler instead of Kohli.

Interestingly, that was also the year India had won the U-19 World Cup, just a month before the auction. They were captained by Virat Kohli and we decided to keep a separate draft for the U-19 players a few days after the auction. Surprise, surprise! Virat Kohli was not the first player to be picked in the draft,” Raman told Gaurav Kapur on the podcast ‘22 Yarns’.

“Delhi passed on him, actually, and picked Pradeep Sangwan instead, because they said they didn’t need another batsman. And they didn’t actually, they had Virender Sehwag and AB de Villiers. They were right in their thinking, but RCB picked him up and the rest, as they say, is history,” he added.

Speculations Intensify Over IPL 2020 Future

IPL 2020 was scheduled to start from March 29, but due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the BCCI postponed it until April 15. As the nationwide lockdown extended in India, BCCI suspended IPL 2020 Indefinitely. Now, with the situation worsening, it seems a huge possibility that IPL stands nothing but cancelled this year.

On April 10, latest reports suggested that the BCCI is probing into the July window to conduct the IPL and it could take place behind closed doors. However, all hopes once again vanished as the BCCI suspended the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 indefinitely in the light of the coronavirus pandemic. With COVID-19 victims toll rising in India, cricket returning to India seems a possibility far from reality.
