Kolkata Knight Riders’ decision to release Chris Lynn came as a big surprise to many, including former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who said that he will message team’s owner regarding it. Venky Mysore, the CEO of KKR, has responded to Yuvraj and said that they released Lynn to bid for him.

“@YUVSTRONG12 we released @lynny50 so that we could bid for you! 😜 Love and respect for both of you champions! #IPL2020 #KKR #Legends #Sixhitters @KKRiders,” he wrote on Twitter.

Yuvraj has now retired from Indian cricket, including IPL, and will not be part of the IPL 2020 auction which takes place next month. He now plays franchise cricket around the world and is expected to play the game for next 3-4 four years.

Talking of Lynn, the franchise’s decision to release him was quite surprising. With 405 runs in 13 matches last season, Lynn was KKR’s second-highest run-scorer. He batted at a strike-rate of 139.65 and continued to do his job even when KKR were thinking whether to promote Shubman Gill or not.

KKR have shown utmost faith in Lynn over the years. In 2017, after he suffered a shoulder issue early in the tournament, the franchise did not release him and Lynn continued to be part of the team and also made a return during the last phase of the league. In 2018, the franchise did not retain him but bought him for Rs 9.6 Crores.

His price seems to be quite high, the probable reason why they let him go. KKR surely need an overseas opener and they might go for someone like Jason Roy, who has been England’s key to success in white-ball cricket.

Apart from Lynn, KKR also released their vice-captain Robin Uthappa, senior spinner Piyush Chawla, Joe Denly, Yarra Prithviraj, Nikhil Naik, KC Cariappa, Matthew Kelly, Anrich Nortje, Shrikant Mundhe and Carlos Brathwaite.

The main task for KKR at the auction will be to add an overseas opener and pacers in the squad. The auction for IPL 2020 takes place on December 19 in Kolkata.
