Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson appeared in recent Q&A session on his official Instagram account and opened up about his illustrious WWE career. He went on to discuss why he retired from WWE at the age of 32, returned to action in 2011, and competed in his final match at WrestleMania 29 in 2013 against John Cena.

 

While disclosing the reason for early retirement from pro-wrestling, The Rock stated that the primary reason was that his contract was expired. He was happy with the achievement and wanted to get a smooth goodbye from the company with the long-time mentor and good friend Vince McMahon.

“I retired in from the WWE in 2004 at the age of 32,” said The Rock. “And at that time, well here’s the why. Why I retired was two reasons. 1) My contract had expired and 2) Which is the most important thing, an agreement that I have with anybody in the world. Any company, any individual, it’s always important to me – it means everything to me – to shake that person’s hand and look them in the eye.”

 

“In 2004 when my contract expired, I had delivered on my agreement with the WWE and with my long-time mentor and very, very good friend Vince McMahon. We shook hands, that’s the way we are.”

The Rock mentioned having his debut WWE match in 1996 at Madison Square Garden and getting the last match in the same arena in 2004. He went on to explain that starting at the age of 25 and ending at 32, these seven years have been the most important for him. The Rock wanted to retire while being on top of his game and he got his wish and then tried his luck in acting.

 

“I called Vince McMahon, we spoke in 2011, I told him I think it’s time and he said, ‘I think it’s time too.’ We mapped out a plan to comeback and have a series of matches,” said The Rock about his much-anticipated return to the WWE im the beginning of the last decade.

The Brahma Bull went into detailing for his comeback match in 2011 at Madison Square Garden. A few months later, he eventually became the WWE Champion. The company had a strategy to churn out a series of matches out of him including main event two Wrestlemanias, back-to-back. On both occasions, he main-evented the scene against John Cena creating a dream match.

“We go into WrestleMania and this is the tell-tell sign if this strategy worked,” said The Rock. “Almost 10 years. I went away, built my career, to comeback and it all boils down to this. WrestleMania in Miami, my hometown, my family was there, we sold out that stadium. I’m blessed to have the main event with John Cena. We had the match, I go over and in wrestling terms go over means I won. Afterwards I go home.”

 

The Rock also revealed that he got a phone call from Vince McMahon after WrestleMania XXVIII who told him that the show broke an all-time record in the history of professional wrestling. They created new butyrate and attendance records for which Vince McMahon was really happy and congratulated him.
