T20I Records Produced During 2019-20 Season

Due to the novel COVID-19 or coronavirus outbreak, the 2019-20 international cricket season ended earlier as the late matches of the season are postponed. During the 2019/20 international cricket season, which ran from September 2019 to March 2020, many significant records were broken by the individual players or a team.

In 2019/20 season, 53 different teams involved in a total of 193 T20I matches. Like the other international formats, some T20I histories were created in this season.

Here we are discussing some top T20I records which were created in the 2019/20 season.

At the very beginning of the season, Sri Lankan T20I captain Lasith Malinga took his name into some reputed record books, but the top one was the best bowling figures in a T20I innings by a captain. It was the match against New Zealand at Pallekele on 6th September 2019, where Malinga had the bowling figures of 4-1-6-5. Breaking the previous record of 4-0-17-5 by the Jersey captain Charles Perchard against Guernsey (at Castel on 1st June 2019), Malinga created that new record.

Chasing down the 126 runs target, New Zealand were bundled out for just 88 runs (16 overs) in that historic Pallekele T20I. In that second innings, Malinga took four wickets in four consecutive balls. Also, in that same game, Malinga became the first bowler to claim 100 T20I wickets.

ACB Removes Playing-Ban On Mohammad Shahzad

On Wednesday (26th February), Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) Disciplinary Committee has announced that they have lifted the one-year ban on the wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad.

Mohammad Shahzad was one of the top batsmen in Afghanistan national cricket team. He is the most T20I (1,936 runs) and international run-scorer (4,732 runs) for Afghanistan. Before his ban from cricket, he was also the most ODI run-scorer (2,727 runs) for Afghanistan. At present, Mohammad Nabi (2,782 runs) is holding the record of most ODI run-scorer for this team as he is just 55 runs away from Shahzad.

Mohammad Shahzad last played for Afghanistan in ICC CWC 2019

The 33-year-old Mohammad Shahzad last played for Afghanistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. During early of that tournament, Shahzad was reportedly faced knee injury. Though he played the first two matches of his team in that tournament, soon after that he was sent back to home citing the fitness issues.

However, later, Mohammad Shahzad publicly claimed that he was fit enough to play matches. It created chaos in Afghanistan cricket.

Later, it was reported that Shahzad breached the ACB’s code of conduct for travelling and practising out of the country several times without taking any permission from the ACB. Due to this reason, the board suspended him from cricket for one year. While that suspension period started on 10th August 2019, the suspension period would have run till early August 2020.

However, recently, Mohammad Shahzad lodged a mercy appeal to the board chairman Mr.Farhan Yusefzai and also promised not to repeat the mistake. The board has accepted that appeal and lift his suspension prior to almost five months before the ban period complete.

From Wednesday, Mohammad Shahzad is now eligible to play all forms of cricket for the country subject to his fitness report. However, his contract ban will continue till early August 2020. Whatever this ban-lift news will definitely give the massive boost in the Afghanistan national cricket team.

During this ban period, Shahzad participated in the Abu Dhabi T10 2019 and Bangladesh Premier League 2019/20.

Gulbadin Naib Publicly Comes Up With Sensational Complaint Against Afghanistan Cricket

On last Wednesday (11th December), the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has reappointed Asghar Afghan as the captain of the national team in every format. Just a few hours later of that decision, former Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib dropped a bombshell where he talked about the big corruption and misconduct in Afghanistan cricket. In a series of tweets, Naib has pointed out that some of the Afghanistan cricketers deliberately underperformed in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 due to his leadership role.

Just ahead of the team selection for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, the ACB stunned everyone by removing Asghar Afghan from the captaincy role in every format. Gulbadin Naib was appointed as the ODI captain which meant that he had to lead the team in the CWC 2019. Some national cricketers openly criticised over Asghar Afghan’s sudden removal from the captaincy post.

Gulbadin Naib-led Afghanistan hugely disappointed the cricket world with their performances in the CWC 2019. While many were expecting some stunning challenging performances from Afghanistan in CWC 2019, they lost all the nine matches of that tournament.

Soon after those dismal performances in the CWC 2019, the ACB dropped Gulbadin Naib from the ODI captaincy role and the then-T20I captain Rashid Khan took over the captaincy post of the national team in every format.

While Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan team provided the mixture performances in every format, it didn’t impress the national cricket board. Finally, the experienced player Asghar Afghan has been reappointed as the Afghanistan captain in every format.

Asghar Afghan Returns As Afghanistan Captain In Every Format

After some recent disappointing performances in international cricket, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has decided to reappoint Asghar Afghan as the national team captain for all the international cricket formats.

Before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, Asghar Afghan was leading the Afghanistan national cricket team in every format. But suddenly, in a surprising way, just before the CWC 2019 team selection, the ACB removed Asghar Afghan from the captaincy role in every format. Many teammates were shocked in that decision and openly criticised the ACB for taking that big decision just before a big tournament.

Gulbadin Naib led the Afghanistan team in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, and they finished that tournament without winning a game as they suffered defeats in all the nine matches. After the dismal performances in that tournament, Naib was sacked from the ODI captaincy role and the T20I captain Rashid Khan was appointed as the captain in every format.

Though Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan team won a Test against the hosts Bangladesh and won a three-match T20I series against Windies in India, the ACB hasn’t impressed much with the team’s performances, especially in the recent Test and ODI cricket. Most recently, Windies beat Rashid Khan-led Afghanistan in the one-off Test and three-match ODI series in India.

Asghar Afghan is the most experienced and successful international captain for Afghanistan. He has led the team in 104 international matches where his team has won 69 matches and lost 31 games.

After Mohammad Nabi (202 matches), Asghar Afghan is the second most experienced international cricketer for Afghanistan. Afghan has played 181 international matches (4 Tests, 111 ODIs and 66 T20Is) where he has scored 3,772 runs (average 23.72) and also taken four wickets.

Afghanistan Cricket Board Reveals 15-Member Test Squad Against Windies

On Monday (25th November), Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced the 15-member squad for the only Test against Windies.

After the limited-overs series against Windies in India, Afghanistan will play the only Test against the same side. Ekana International Cricket Stadium (Lucknow), which hosted all the recent limited-overs matches between Afghanistan and Windies, will also host this Test match from 27th November.

Rashid Khan will continue the leadership role in the upcoming Test match against Windies. Talking about the uncapped Test players, the left-arm pacer Hamza Hotak and medium-pacer Nijat Masood are likely to make their Test debuts in this upcoming game. Both have impressed with their recent consistent performances in limited-overs cricket.

In this 15-member squad, a total of four players are uncapped Test players. Apart from Hamza Hotak and Nijat Masood, Karim Janat and Nasir Jamal are the other cricketers who haven’t played a Test match yet. The 20-year-old Nijat Masood is the only player among them who hasn’t played an international game yet.

The upcoming Test will be the fourth Test for Afghanistan, third in this year (2019). They made their Test debut in June 2018 with the Bengaluru Test against the hosts India. Afghanistan lost that game by an innings and 262 runs. Till the date, it is the only Test where they suffered a defeat.

This year, Afghanistan played against Ireland in March (at Dehradun) and against the hosts Bangladesh in September (at Chattogram). The 12th Test member side won both those matches and wants to continue this form against the eighth-ranked Test team Windies.

ICC T20I Rankings: Mujeeb Ur Rahman Takes The Second Place

Afghanistan’s mystery spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman has made significant gains in the latest update of the ICC T20I Rankings. Mujeeb made a jump of six places in the rankings table to take the second position. The off-spinner scalped two wickets in the three matches against West Indies.

Mujeeb bowled with a brilliant economy rate of 4.60 in the series. Rahman now has 742 rating points under his belt. Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan occupies the numero uno position with 749 rating points. Meanwhile, there are no Indian bowlers in the top 10 rankings.

Afghanistan won the series 2-1.

Kuldeep Yadav is at the 13th place in the ICC T20I rankings. On the other hand, Afghanistan came from behind to win the three-match T20I series by 2-1. West Indies had clean sweep the Afghans in the One Day International series. Furthermore, the Windies had won the first T20I by 30 runs but Afghanistan bounced back to take the next two matches.

Afghanistan won the second T20I by 41 runs and also won the third and final match by 29 runs. Afghanistan wicket-keeper batsman Rahmullah Gurbaz scored a fine knock of 79 runs off just 52 balls in the final game.

Afghanistan Vs Windies 2019/20: Third T20I – Afghanistan Create History By Winning Their First International Series Against Windies

On Sunday (17th October) night, Afghanistan won the series decider third and final T20I of the series against Windies at Lucknow and created a history. Afghanistan won this match by 29 runs and won this series by 2-1.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan decided to bat first after winning the toss. But apart from the opener and wicketkeeper-batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz, other top-orders failed in that innings. Another opener Hazratullah Zazai (0), no.3 batsman Karim Janat (2) and no.4 batsman Ibrahim Zadran (1) all lost their wickets cheaply.

However, those dismissals didn’t put any effect on Gurbaz’s game as he continued his superb batting performance and carried that innings in his own responsibility. With Asghar Afghan, Gurbaz put a very crucial fourth-wicket partnership of 50 runs.

Apart from Gurbaz, only Asghar Afghan (24) reached the 20-run mark in that innings. Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 79 runs off 52 balls (6 fours and 5 sixes). At late of that innings, Najibullah Zadran (14) and Mohammad Nabi (15) played small cameos which helped Afghanistan to manage the challenging first innings total of 156/8 in 20 overs.

Lewis scored 24 runs and Hope was the only Windies batsman who put a strong challenge in that innings. Before losing his wicket in 19th over, Hope scored 52 runs off 46 balls (3 fours and only six). However, he didn’t get much help from the other batsmen. Finally, Afghanistan restricted the Caribbean side to just 127/7 (20 overs).

The right-arm pacer Naveen-ul-Haq (3/24) was the only Afghanistan bowler to scalp more than one wicket while his other fellow bowlers took one wicket each, except Mohammad Nabi (0/13).

Afghanistan Vs Windies 2019/20: Second T20I – Karim Janat’s Heroic All-Round Performances Guide Afghanistan To Level The Series

Afghanistan have remarkably made a comeback in the three-match T20I series against Windies after winning the second T20I of the series on Saturday (16th November) night at Lucknow. Karim Janat delivered brilliant all-round performances that guided Afghanistan to win that low-scoring game.

Trailing this series by 1-0, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan decided to bat first after winning the toss. The openers Hazratullah Zazai and wicketkeeper-batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz provided a superb start with the 42 runs partnership in 4.2 overs.

However, the Afghan batsmen failed to score big runs as none of their batsmen reached the 30-run mark. The opener Zazai and the hero of this match Karim Janat both scored 26 runs. While Afghanistan were losing their wickets at regular intervals, the late batsmen Najibullah Zadran (20*) and Gulbadin Naib (24) scored some crucial runs. Finally, Afghanistan managed to score 147/7 in 20 overs.

Karim Janat had the bowling figures of 4-0-11-5

In reply, Windies batsmen never felt comfortable to chase that target as they had no proper partnership. They failed to stop the pacer Karim Janat’s destruction as apart from the wicketkeeper-batsman Denesh Ramdin, all other Windies batsmen failed to reach the 20-run mark. Also, Ramdin couldn’t provide strong guidance as he remained not out on 24 runs off 27 balls. Afghanistan restricted the Caribbean side to just 106/8 (20 overs) and they won by 41 runs.

Karim Janat was furious on that night. The right-arm pacer took at least one wicket in every over in that second innings and finished with the bowling figures of 4-0-11-5. Karim Janat’s these bowling figures were the second-best T20I bowling figures in Afghanistan cricket history. Only the leg-spinner Rashid Khan (2-1-3-5 against Ireland on 10th March 2017) once provided the better T20I bowling figures than Janat’s latest bowling performance.

On last Thursday (14th November) night, Windies won the first T20I of this series by 30 runs. But after winning the second T20I, Afghanistan have levelled this series by 1-1 with one match to go. Afghanistan vs West Indies, 1st T20I – Dream XI Prediction, Predicted XI, Pitch, Fantasy League Tips

West Indies had whitewashed Afghanistan in the three-match One Day International series and they would like to continue their wood on the Rashid Khan-led side. Afghanistan has had a horrible run of 12 losses in the 50-overs format but they would like to turn the tables in the shortest format. Sportzwiki brings you Dream XI Prediction, Predicted XI, Pitch, Fantasy League Tips.

However, it is going to be an arduous task for the Afghans. They haven’t savored a win against the Windies since 2016 in T20Is and had also lost three T20Is in the Carribean in 2017.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman, ODI bowling rankings, ODI all-rounder rankings

Here are Dream XI Predictions and Fantasy League Tips:

First of all, it is crucial to select a team that has players who will surely play in the game. As they say in cricket, you don’t score any runs in the dressing room. Similarly, a player who is not playing cannot score points for you. In fact, Dream11 has brought a change in its rule by which you can alter your team even after the toss. Thus, you can pick your team according to the playing XI of both sides.

Secondly, it is pivotal to pick the right combination of captain and vice-captain. A captain gets twice the points whereas the deputy of the team will 1.5 times the points. Thus, it is imperative to select the big in-form players as your respective captain and vice-captain.

It is also crucial to get top-order batsmen in the team as they are likely to score the major chunk of the score. Furthermore, it is pivotal to check the pitch conditions and select the team accordingly.

Afghanistan, Windies
Afghanistan and Windies. (Image Credit: Google)

In fact, one can take a gamble of selecting a player who has less chance of succeeding in big leagues. Thus, that particular player has less chance of getting selected by other users. Consequently, if that player fires at all cylinders then it can be a big bonus.

Afghanistan Predicted XI: Hazratullah Zazai, Ibrahim Zadran, Javed Ahmadi, Najibullah Zadran, Asghar Afghan, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan (capt), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), Naveen-ul-Haq, Sayed Shirzad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

West Indies Predicted XI: Lendl Simmons, Evin Lewis, Brandon King, Denesh Ramdin (wk), Sherfane Rutherford, Kieron Pollard (capt), Jason Holder, Khary Pierre, Hayden Walsh Jr, Alzarri Joseph, Sheldon Cottrell.

Pitch Conditions: The pitch is going to assist the batsmen and the captain winning the toss will look to bowl first because of the dew conditions.

Afghanistan Vs Windies 2019/20: First T20I – Match Preview, Stats Preview, Where To Watch

After the three-match ODI series, Afghanistan and Windies are ready for the three-match T20I series. On Thursday (14th November), they will play the first match of this T20I series at Ekana International Cricket Stadium (Lucknow).

The recent ODI series had the 3-0 result in favour of Windies. On the other hand, Windies have won three T20Is against Afghanistan out of their four T20I meetings while Afghanistan have won the other one.

At present, Afghanistan are the no.8-ranked T20I team and two-time World T20 champions Windies are the no.10-ranked T20I side.

After completing the whitewash, Kieron Pollard-led Windies are now heading towards T20I series. Windies players mostly dominated in the ODI series and they surely want to carry this form in T20I series too.

However, Windies have struggled in the recent T20I cricket. Since January 2018, Windies have played 21 T20Is where they have managed to win only four games and suffered defeats in 16 matches. The picture is more disturbing in this year as Windies have lost all the six T20Is in 2019 and they haven’t won a T20I in this year yet.

Windies. Afghanistan

Also, many crucial experienced T20I players are not in this series too.

However, many of this T20I squad featured in the recently concluded ODI series. Also, the other players are well T20 specialists. Moreover, Kieron Pollard is their new T20I captain, who is an experienced T20 cricketer and just led the Caribbean team to win an ODI series for the first time since August 2014.

Due to the suspension, Windies will miss Nicholas Pooran in this entire T20I series.

Afghanistan have recently suffered their 12 consecutive ODI defeats after recently losing all the three ODIs against Windies. But their recent T20I pictures are totally different than their present ODI form.

In last September, during the T20I tri-series in Bangladesh, Afghanistan created a new record in T20I history by winning 12 successive T20I matches. To register that new record, Afghanistan broke their own previous record of 11 straight T20I victories.

Since 2018, Afghanistan have played 14 T20Is out of which they have won 12 matches and lost two games. They have played seven T20Is this year where this Asian team has won five times and lost twice.

While the 21-year-old leg-spinner Rashid Khan is leading this Afghanistan team, this team has won two games out of the four T20Is under his leadership (lost the other two matches). His present weak form is also another biggest problem for his team.

Rashid Khan

Afghanistan batting isn’t much experienced but they are very powerful. However, the top-order needs to perform better and consistently to successfully maintain their T20I records.

Stats Preview:

(Windies)

i) Lendl Simmons (907 runs) in 93 runs behind and Kieron Pollard (903 runs) is 97 runs behind to complete 1,000 T20I runs for Windies. Till the date, Chris Gayle (1,627 runs), Marlon Samuels (1,611 runs) and Dwayne Bravo (1,142 runs) have scored 1,000+ T20I runs for Windies.
