As confirmed by the WWE, during the December 9 episode of SmackDown, the last-of-its-kind franchise player of the WWE was announced to make his return to TV after more than six months. The below statement was provided on the official website of the company to hype things up while no such confirmation was there about the reason for his appearance,

This will be the first time that the veteran will be seen in the 30-superstar melee since 2018. Also, this in-ring return also brightens up the possibility of seeing him back in action at WrestleMania 39.
John Cena’s last match on television in WWE took place at Summerslam 2021, where he lost to Universal Champion Roman Reigns in the main event match. Afterward, he appeared on the June 27 episode of RAW, where he celebrated his 20th anniversary in the company. Many hoped to get an update on his in-ring return that night but that wasn’t the case. Now, the current assumption is the big announcement should come on the December 30th episode of SmackDown.
