Another NXT Superstar made his main roster debut through this week’s WWE Smackdown on FOX that took place at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. Much to the surprise of the fans, it was Pete Dunne who arrived on Friday nights with a changed name of Butch. This alteration reportedly led to some groans and frustration within the company.

As noted, the latest episode of WWE Smackdown saw Butch get the main roster call-up from WWE NXT. He was put into a faction with Sheamus and Ridge Holland. Plus, he was billed as another protégé of The Celtic Warrior who’s apparently a longtime associate of Holland and Sheamus. Then he accompanied Sheamus and Holland to the ring for their scheduled match.

It was a tag team bout on WWE Smackdown where Big E and Kofi Kingston digested the loss to Sheamus and Holland, thanks to the distraction provided by Butch. Sheamus finished Kofi off for the win with a Brogue Kick while Big E was being checked on at ringside for an injury. He broke his neck after a nasty landing from a belly-to-belly suplex thrown by Holland on the floor.

WWE Smackdown superstars aren’t happy with the name Butch

An update coming out of WWE Smackdown, backstage at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham says that “something very dumb” was planned for the show, according to Fightful Select.

While Dunne wasn’t directly named in the backstage chatter, a Superstar already knew heading into the show that he was undergoing a name change. The name change was also something that caused frustration by backstage officials and superstars who had heard about it.

Then WWE SmackDown hit the air it was revealed that Dunne will now be going by the name of Butch, with a new look and all. It was also added in the report that a few non-WWE wrestlers knew of the name change, one day ago. They were speculating that it could be related to WWE Hall of Famers The Bushwhackers, Butch, and Luke but that wasn’t the case.

That being said, the former WWE NXT UK Champion will now be known as Butch on WWE Smackdown. He re-signed with WWE back in the summer who tweeted a GIF of the backstage segment and wrote, “BUTCH. Probably” to react to the situation.
