Bangladesh talisman all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has shown disappointment when he was named the Player of the tournament in the 2019 World Cup. Hasan, who is currently serving a ban of one year, had a brilliant run in the World Cup. The southpaw batsman, who batted at number three for the Tigers in the ODI showpiece, scored 606 runs in eight matches at an impressive average of 86.57 and strike rate of 96.04 to finish as the third highest run-getter of the tourney.
Hasan’s average of 86.57 was the highest in the tournament. Furthermore, the left-arm also delivered the goods with the ball as he scalped 11 wickets in eight matches at an average of 36.27. Thus, the Bangladesh veteran was able to come up with an all-round performance in the World Cup.
Shakib Al Hasan was brilliant in the World Cup
“Well, I wished for it, to be honest. Yeah, I think as an individual player that’s the highest achievement you can get,” Shakib was quoted as saying to Harsha Bhogle on Cricbuzz.
However, Hasan was not chosen as the Player of the tournament and the award was given to New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who had led his team to the final of the competition.
Williamson had scored 578 runs in 10 matches of the World Cup at an average of 82.57. In fact, Williamson had himself shown a bit of surprise after he was announced as the Player of the tournament.
Shakib Al Hasan was superb throughout the tourney
The all-rounder recalled that he was once awarded the Man of the tournament in the 2012 Asia Cup and it was a surreal feeling for him.
“I got man of the series once in 2012 Asia Cup. That was I think a huge achievement for me because all the big names of the other sub-continent teams were also there, like Mahela, Sangakkara, Sachin, Sehwag all those players were playing at that time, Misbah, Younis Khan all those players were playing,” he stated.
On the other hand, Hasan who has shared the dressing room with Kane Williamson in the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, feels the Kiwis captain deserved to win the coveted award.
“Getting the man of the series award at that stage was a special moment for me but yeah it would have been nice if I would have got the Man of the Tournament in the World Cup. But that happens and I think Kane deserve it. The way he handled his team and took them to the final was something I’ll cherish,” Shakib added.
