Suryakumar Yadav Doubtful For South Africa Series, Set For lengthy Spell on Sideline Due To Hand Injury

Suryakumar Yadav is set to spend a good amount of time on the sidelines owing to the hand injury he received while playing in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). The right-handed batsman had got hit on his left arm while taking a run during Mumbai Indians’ match against Gujarat Titans on May 6. On the next day, he woke up with a swollen arm. Eventually, the hand injury ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament.

Earlier this week, Mumbai Indians released a statement which read, “Suryakumar Yadav has sustained a muscle strain on the left forearm, and has been ruled out for the season. He has been advised rest, in consultation with the BCCI medical team.” According to Cricbuzz, the Mumbai superstar has decided against visiting the National Cricket Academy for his rehabilitation. He will undergo scans on his injured hand in Mumbai on Wednesday (May 11).

At least four week spell on sidelines for Suryakumar Yadav:

According to the same news outlet, Suryakumar Yadav is set to spend at least four weeks on the sidelines. The batsmen was initially expected to recover quickly but it looks highly unlikely now. The long spell on the sidelines means he is likely to miss out on a few games of the South Africa series. India play five Twenty20 Internationals against the Proteas at home from June 9 to 19 after the IPL ends on May 29. With Suryakumar being an integral part of the T20 team now, he is likely to be conditionally picked, subject to attaining full fitness.

With one eye on this year’s T20 World Cup, the team-management would be hoping that Suryakumar recovers quickly. The star batsman looked in good touch in the IPL. Unlike Mumbai Indians, he had a decent outing in the tournament this year. After recovering from another injury at the start of the competition, he hit the ground running and played some fine knocks. In eight matches, he scored an impressive 303 runs at an average of 43.29. He also scored three fifties in the competition.

IPL 2022: Hand Injury Rules Suryakumar Yadav Out Of The Tournament

Suryakumar Yadav has suffered yet another injury blow. The latest injury has put an end to his campaign in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022). The right-handed batsman was injured at the start of the tournament too. Suryakumar missed Mumbai Indians’ first two matches of the competition owing to a hand injury. And his latest injury is also a hand injury. Suryakumar has suffered the injury in his left forearm muscle.

He had sustained the injury while playing against Gujarat Titans on May 6. The franchise hasn’t named any replacement for now. Suryakumar was one of the few positives for Mumbai Indians in an otherwise forgettable campaign in IPL 2022. The five-time champions just could not hit the top gear and were the first team to be out of the playoffs race. Earlier in the season, they became the first team to lose the first seven games in IPL.

The Rohit Sharma-led side suffered yet another defeat after that before opening their account. Following the 8 successive losses, they registered wins against Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans. With four games now left in the season for Mumbai, the franchise would be looking to exit the competition on a high. They can also play the role of party-poppers. With absolutely no pressure on them, the most successful team in the history of the league can surely ruin a few teams’ chances of progressing to the playoffs.

Suryakumar Yadav’s season:

Unlike Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar Yadav had a decent outing in the tournament this year. After recovering from the hand injury, he hit the ground running and played some fine knocks. In eight matches, he scored an impressive 303 runs at an average of 43.29. He also scored three fifties in the competition. Suryakumar is currently the second highest run-getter for the franchise.

Rahul Dravid Recommended Physio Nitin Patel To Be Transferred To National Cricket Academy

Rahul Dravid, Indian men’s cricket team head coach has reportedly recommended physio Nitin Patel to be transferred to the National Cricket Academy where he will work towards addressing the recent spate of rising injuries to players. He could be promoted to lead the Head Sports Science and Medicine department at the NCA.

The Indian team has been struck by injuries to its star players in recent months including Deepak Chahar, Suryakumar Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy among others. With T20I and ODI World Cups scheduled for back-to-back years, the team management wants to utilize Nitin Patel’s expertise at the academy where injured players are sent for rehabilitation.

Recently several Indian players like Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Chahar, Varun Chakravarthy, Bhuvneshwar Kumar have sustained injuries and had to be dropped from the Indian squads. India all-rounder Hardik Pandya is already working on improving his fitness at the NCA. With the T20I World and 50-over World Cup on the cards, the BCCI is willing Nitin Patel to help improve the fitness of these key players.

Meanwhile, the second Test between India and Sri Lanka starts on March 12 in Bengaluru. It will be a day-night Test match with the MS Chinnaswamy stadium becoming the third Indian venue to host a Pink-Ball Test match. A 100 per cent crowd capacity will be allowed for the Test match after recommendations from BCCI.

Shreyas Iyer Scored 3rd Consecutive Fifty Against Sri Lanka Becoming 4th Indian Batsman To Do So

Shreyas Iyer hit his 3rd consecutive half-century against Sri Lanka to join Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma on an elite list. He is now one of the four Indian batsmen to score 3 consecutive half-centuries in T20Is.

Shreyas Iyer continued his red-hot form in the T20I series against Sri Lanka and scored his third consecutive half-century of the series. Shreyas Iyer hit 204 runs at a phenomenal strike rate of 174 through the series, and claimed the Player of the Series trophy for those efforts.

Shreyas Iyer Hits 3rd Consecutive 50 Against Sri Lanka Joining Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, And KL Rahul In An Elite List

Batting at number 3 in rested Virat Kohli’s absence, Shreyas Iyer made the most out of the opportunities. He kicked off the series with an unbeaten knock of 57. In the 2nd T20I, he scored 74* off 44 as India chased down the big target of 184. In the 3rd T20I, the right-handed batsman breached the 50-run mark off 29 balls. India was chasing a target of 147 in search of a whitewash.
As Shreyas Iyer completed his 3rd consecutive half-century of the series, he joined Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul in an elite list. Shreyas Iyer is now one of the four Indian batsmen to score 3 consecutive half-centuries in the shortest format.

Virat Kohli, the first Indian to achieve this milestone, had first hit 3 back-to-back fifty-plus scores in 2012. He repeated his heroics in 2014 and 2016. He was joined by Rohit Sharma in 2018. KL Rahul has achieved this milestone twice – in 2020 and 2021. Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli are the only 2 Indian batsmen to score 3 back-to-back half-centuries in a single series.

Shreyas Iyer’s Form Will Pose Selection Headaches When Rested Virat Kohli And Injured Suryakumar Yadav Returns

Shreyas Iyer’s sublime form in the series will pose a selection headache for the team management going ahead as Virat Kohli will be an automatic selection once he returns. Suryakumar Yadav was also in the form before he was ruled out of the Sri Lanka series. The players’ IPL form will have a great say in deciding their places in the playing XI.
Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav was ruled out with an injury (hairline fracture) before Sri Lanka T20Is. Suyakumar Yadav scored the most-104 runs in ODIs and 107 runs-the 2nd most in T20Is against West Indies.

Team India’s next white-ball series will be against South Africa in June. The Men in Blue will host Proteas in 5 T20Is a couple of weeks after the end of IPL 2022. Before IPL, Team India will be hosting SL in two Test matches in Mohali and Bengaluru, respectively.
But after eight innings at No. 3 (six of which have come against Sri Lanka, by the way), Shreyas Iyer has hit a whopping 340 runs at a strike rate of 147, average up at 68. He was not dismissed across the three matches, hitting 57* off 28, 74* off 44, and 73* off 45. All up, he struck seven sixes and 20 fours in the series.

Virat Kohli Has An Option To Open In 2022 T20I World Cup: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra and Irfan Pathan combined to select their 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup and the former suggested an option that could allow Virat Kohli to open for India.

While it remains far-fetched, Virat Kohli had opened for India last year in a T20I against England, and the experiment reaped rewards. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had put together a blistering opening stand of 94 runs in merely 9 overs, as India put a mammoth total of 224/2.

Aakash Chopra: Certainties Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rishabh Pant Gives An Option To Open With Virat Kohli

However, an abundance of opening options like Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and KL Rahul in the Indian squad didn’t allow Virat Kohli to return to the opening spot.

“Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant are all certain in the 15 (15-member squad for the World Cup). They also give you an option to open with Kohli, and play Rahul in the middle-order. Rahul can also be your second wicketkeeping option,” Aakash Chopra said.

“You need a left-hander in the middle-order and Rishabh Pant fills that space. Ravindra Jadeja has also been tried in the middle-order recently (in the T20Is against Sri Lanka),” Aakash Chopra said.

While Suryakumar Yadav had a magnificent showing in the three-match rubber against the Windies, it was Shreyas Iyer — with three back-to-back half-centuries — who stole the limelight against Sri Lanka.

Irfan Pathan: Suryakumar Yadav Worthy Of Praise By The Way He Cemented His Place In XI

Irfan Pathan, meanwhile, named two players who he believes are guaranteed to be in the XI in the T20I World Cup.

“I think SKY (Suryakumar) and Pant are in the XI, you can take that in writing. I know there is still time and they have to keep performing, but the way SKY has cemented his place in the XI, it’s really worthy of praise,” said Pathan.

India registered an emphatic six-wicket win in the third and final T20I of the series against Sri Lanka.
The series saw a number of first-team batters being absent as Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant were rested for the three T20Is, while Suryakumar Yadav was ruled out with an injury (hairline fracture). Suyakumar Yadav scored the most-104 runs in ODIs and 107 runs-the 2nd most in T20Is against West Indies.
Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav (BCCI)
In their absences, Shreyas Iyer batted at no.3 in the Indian lineup and produced a scintillating performance, scoring 204 runs in the series while remaining unbeaten in all three matches.
The magnificent performance from Shreyas Iyer adds to the selection headache for captain Rohit Sharma and the team management as the side prepares for the T20I World Cup in Australia later this year.
But once the trio of Suryakumar Yadav, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant return, it would leave India with a conundrum on who to pick between Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav.

Jasprit Bumrah Reckons Rohit Sharma’s Trust In Him Helped Him During Early Days At Mumbai Indians

Jasprit Bumrah said Rohit Sharma’s trust in him helped him a lot through his early years at Mumbai Indians, saying he still shares a wonderful relationship with his India captain.

Jasprit Bumrah said Rohit Sharma’s backing during the early stages of his career at Mumbai Indians helped him develop confidence and evolve as a bowler. Jasprit Bumrah said he started playing for the 5-time champions in the Indian Premier League regularly under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy after getting picked by MI as early as 2013.

Jasprit Bumrah Reckons He Got Freedom To Play Under MI Skipper Rohit Sharma

Speaking to Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube show, Jasprit Bumrah said his relationship with Rohit Sharma has been the same from the early stages of his career, and the trust the skipper had in him played a big role in his career.

The highly-rated India fast bowler said the relationship has evolved to a stage where Rohit Sharma allows him to have control over his field placements and bowling plans for Mumbai Indians.

Jasprit Bumrah made his IPL debut in 2013 but he became a regular fixture of MI’s plans only in 2016 after making his India debut. The Gujarat fast bowler has grown to become an integral member of the Mi side, picking up 130 wickets in 106 matches.

“It’s been very good (Relationship) since the early days. When I came into the side, Ricky Ponting was the captain but I was not playing regularly. But under Rohit, I did. He had a lot of confidence in me, he instilled confidence,” Bumrah said.

“He saw me bowling in the nets and the skills that I have. He always backed me, told me to believe in myself. Whenever in the initial stages as well, he had a lot of trust in me. He would give me the important overs. It’s been the same relationship.”

“Now we have reached a stage he doesn’t even tell me things. He will tell ‘you set the field on your own, if you have any changes, tell me, I will do that’. He has had that trust because I have made things work. Somedays, things might not go well, but he always has kept the atmosphere in our team very simple and calm.”

“Under him, I have got the freedom to do whatever I want. That has really helped me.”

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah dismissed the popular notion that he learned the trick of the trades from the IPL, adding that domestic cricket helped him a lot.

Jasprit Bumrah Reckons Shane Bond Pushed Him Out Of His Comfort Zone

Jasprit Bumrah highlighted the role of bowling coach Shane Bond in helping him learn new things by going out of his comfort zone during his early days at the Mumbai Indians.

“And when I reached Mumbai Indians, I had a set template of playing T20 cricket which got me here. So I thought I will stick to it and I thought if I chance, I might lose the things I have.”

“When I went there, Shane Bond and the Mumbai Indians set-up taught me how to plan and analyze for different batters. When I started, I had 2-3 deliveries. I did not know what field to have when. I used to say ‘I am going to bowl this delivery, you set the field accordingly because I did not know where the ball would be good because my accuracy was still in development.”

Shane Bond (BCCI.TV)

“But at MI, I started understanding these things, started planning on my own. I started studying my own game. I realized that people are preparing for me, so I have to have things that are out of the syllabus or out of the thought process of the batter.”

“For instance, I can’t bowl a slower ball because of the dew. I developed the slower yorker. Trying different things and gaining the confidence to execute it came at MI. Shane Bond pushed me out of my comfort zone and try new things. He put me under pressure, saying the things I have not done,” he said.

Jasprit Bumrah, who the franchise retained as the second player for INR 12 crore before IPL 2022, has never worn another shirt than the Mumbai Indians. In his 106-match career, he has picked 130 wickets at 23.04 with an economy rate of 7.42. Mumbai Indians retained Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard, Suryakumar Yadav.

Aakash Chopra Asserts Shreyas Iyer’s Brilliant Show Increases Selection Headaches

Aakash Chopra believes Shreyas Iyer’s excellent knocks in the last two T20Is against Sri Lanka have compounded the selection headaches for Team India.

Shreyas Iyer smashed an unbeaten 57 off just 28 deliveries in the first T20I to help Team India set a massive 200-run target for the Lankans. He followed that up with another unbeaten 74-run knock in Saturday’s encounter to help seal the series for the hosts.

Aakash Chopra: Shreyas Iyer Can’t Be Dropped Now

While reviewing the second T20I in a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra highlighted the selection dilemma caused by Shreyas Iyer’s knock.

He said: “It’s a big question for India now on where to make Shreyas Iyer play because you cannot drop him now but you cannot play him as well. It’s a very sweet headache, you don’t need Disprin but Shreyas Iyer for that.”

The cricketer-turned-commentator pointed out that a plethora of frontline batters are missing in the current Indian squad. Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant have been rested for the T20I series. Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul were injured and ruled out while Hardik Pandya have been absent for a while. Ruturaj Gaikwad also faced an injury ahead of the 1st T20I. He has been ruled out and replaced by Mayank Agarwal in the squad.

Aakash Chopra explained: “There is a lot of discussion about him [Shreyas]. It is because we say that there is no KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav at the moment. We can also add Hardik Pandya to it.”

Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra reckons KL Rahul is also being considered for a middle-order spot and not as an opener.

He reasoned: “Potentially all of them are middle-order players because you are not looking at KL Rahul also as an opener, you want a left-right combination at the top because you did that in the World Cup as well.”

The former India opener highlighted that Shreyas Iyer was last in the pecking order of middle-order batters before the ongoing series against Sri Lanka.

Chopra elaborated: “If you want left-right at the top and Ishan Kishan as an opener, then they all are middle order. Shreyas Iyer’s number was last among them. The talks were that Surya had gone ahead and Rishabh, Rahul and Kohli are in any case ahead, then what will happen to Iyer, God knows if he will get a chance or not.”

The Indian team management will certainly have a tough time while finalizing their middle-order if all the players are fit and available. KL Rahul might have to bat at the top of the order to resolve some of their selection issues.

Aakash Chopra Picked Shreyas Iyer As The Player Of The Match For Playing An Amazing Knock of Unbeaten 74

Aakash Chopra also picked Shreyas Iyer as his Player of the Match for the second T20I between India and Sri Lanka.

He observed: “My Player of the Match has to be Shreyas Iyer. Whenever he has got the opportunities, he has made the best use of them. When he got to bat in the 12th over in the first match, he played the role of a finisher, took India to 199 and here when he came into bat in the 2nd over itself, he played an amazing knock.”

Ravindra Jadeja (AFP Photo)
Ravindra Jadeja (AFP Photo)

The 44-year-old commentator was particularly appreciative of Shreyas Iyer showing the willingness to play second fiddle to Ravindra Jadeja towards the latter stages of India’s run chase.

Aakash Chopra stated: “He didn’t let Praveen Jayawickrama bowl at all, continuously batted well and remained unbeaten till the end. The best part was the maturity at the end, that he has to finish the match. He allowed Jaddu to hit from the other end. That’s the kind of mindset you really like.”

Ravindra Jadeja smoked 45 out of the 58-run partnership between him and Iyer. He also faced the majority of deliveries during this period as the Mumbaikar was mostly content in giving him the strike.

Shreyas Iyer (74* off 44) and Ravindra Jadeja (45* off 18) were in carnage mode as India cruised to an emphatic 7-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the second T20I. Shreyas Iyer was ably supported by Sanju Samson (39 off 25) as India crossed the finishing line in 17.1 overs to seal the series.

Rohit Sharma Among Others To Be Felicitated By Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Before IPL 2022

Rohit Sharma will be felicitated by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for becoming the Indian cricket team captain in all three formats of the game. While the 34-year-old got the reins of white-ball teams last year, he was recently named the skipper of the Test team. The upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka at home will mark Rohit Sharma’s maiden captaincy assignment in Test cricket.

With the veteran opener taking giant strides, MCA decided to honour him. The decision was made during the MCA Apex Council meeting held on Thursday (February 24).

Meanwhile, several other players, hailing from Mumbai, will also be felicitated. Among those is U19 star Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who was instrumental in India’s triumph at the Under-19 World Cup 2022. With 278 runs in six matches, he finished as India’s highest run-scorer.

“In today’s Apex Council Meeting decision passed Rohit Sharma will be felicitated for becoming captain of all three formats. Angkrish Raghuvanshi will be felicitated by MCA with a cash prize of Rs one lakh and momento,” an MCA Apex Council was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, the function will take place next month, ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. IPL 2022 tournament is going to be held during the March-April-May window this year and it will be played across four venues. It has been decided that the tournament will be played at four venues – Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, and MCA International Stadium in Pune.

Suryakumar Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Prithvi Shaw, & Shreyas Iyer To Be Honoured

Besides Rohit Sharma and Angkrish Raghuvanshi, the likes of middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav, pace all-rounder Shardul Thakur, opener Prithvi Shaw and middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer will also be honoured. Young batter Sarfaraz Khan, who has been doing well in domestic cricket lately, will also be felicitated. His last few Ranji Trophy innings include a 177, a 226 not out and an unbeaten 301.

Meanwhile, Team India has been on a roll in white-ball cricket lately. After whitewashing West Indies in both the ODI and T20I series, the Men in Blue comprehensively defeated Sri Lanka in the first of the three T20Is on Thursday (February 24).

Notably, the T20I World Cup is scheduled to take place later this year in Australia. Notably, the Men in Blue suffered a horrendous campaign in last year’s T20I World Cup 2021, where they couldn’t even clear the league stage.

Rohit Sharma’s Biggest Targets Are The 2022 T20I World Cup And 2023 ODI World Cup: Saba Karim

Rohit Sharma said that he currently has no issues with playing “all games” in bio-secure environments. The Indian team will be addressing the fitness issues of all players including Rohit Sharma and former India wicketkeeper-batter Saba Karim believes the skipper wants his players to remain fit and available with two World Cups lined up.

The home assignment against Sri Lanka is India’s second hurdle before the 2022 T20I World Cup and the team has undergone some changes due to injuries and the non-availability of players. While senior players Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant have been rested for the series, KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, Suryakumar Yadav, and Deepak Chahar have been forced to miss the T20Is due to injuries.

Rohit Sharma Doesn’t Have Much Time Before The 2022 T20I World Cup And 2023 ODI World Cup And He Expects Players To Perform And Stay Fit: Saba Karim

A confident Indian unit will eye another series win. While the focus remains on continuing the winning momentum, India will also look to find the perfect team combination in the lead-up to this year’s T20 World Cup.

A lackluster show in the previous 2021 T20I showpiece event led to the Indian team’s early exit and putting up a much-improved show in the impending edition will perhaps be a high-priority objective for newly appointed skipper Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid.

“Rohit Sharma’s biggest targets are the T20 World Cup this year and the 50-over World Cup in 2023. He does not have much time and he wants players to perform up to expectations and stay fit. It seems like he feels it is important to address this fitness issue. Often uncomfortable questions are not asked in Indian cricket,” said Karim on a podcast.

With workload management coming into the picture, the team management will try experimenting with players and Saba Karim feels Rohit Sharma needs to find the solution to help India end their trophy drought at ICC events.

“Solutions need to be found for these problems, the right players need to be picked and backed. This is Rohit Sharma’s role. His style of addressing the issue may be different, but the intention is right,” he added.

Team India won their 10th successive T20I match in a row as they defeated Sri Lanka by 62 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Opener Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer’s fifties helped the hosts score 199 after they were asked to bat first, in reply, Sri Lanka couldn’t chase down the 200-run target, handing India a big win and a place in the history books as well. In reply, the visiting team could only muster up a total of 137/6 after a troublesome start.

Saba Karim: It Remains To Be Seen How Rohit Sharma Reacts To Defeats

Rohit Sharma the captain is seen as a cool customer who gives freedom to his players to express themselves. But the full-time Indian leader was spotted losing his cool in the series against the West Indies. Saba Karim pointed out how Rohit Sharma’s outbursts don’t mean that has a grudge against the player.

“There is no malice but a sense of innocence in Rohit’s outbursts. And players accept it. But we saw some of those expressions when MI was struggling last season. All the players know that this is how Rohit is on the field and off it as well. But yes, there are many challenges in store for him. We are winning now, so it remains to be seen how he reacts to defeats,” Karim further added.

Playing his 115th innings for team India, Rohit Sharma surpassed Martin Guptill’s T20I tally of 3299 runs which the latter had scored in 108 innings. The Mumbai batter, after today’s innings, has amassed a total of 3307 runs in 123 T20Is at an average of 33.07, with the help of 26 half-centuries and 4 centuries.

Placed at the third spot, is India’s former skipper Virat Kohli, who has accumulated 3296 runs across 89 innings at an average of 51.50. Rohit Sharma has led India 26 times in T20Is and has a wonderful record, winning 22 matches and his winning percentage is 84.61 per cent. Rohit Sharma led India had earlier won the T20I series 3-0 against West Indies in 2022.

Wasim Jaffer Praised ‘Short Guy Who Packs A Solid Punch’ Ishan Kishan For His 56 Ball 89

Wasim Jaffer, the former Indian opener on Thursday hailed keeper opener Ishan Kishan as a “short guy” who packs a “solid punch.” The young wicketkeeper-batter scored an explosive 56-ball 89 in the first India-Sri Lanka T20I in Lucknow on Thursday.

Ishan Kishan’s position as the opening batter was in doubt after his three lacklustre outings – 71 runs at 23.67 – against West Indies. However, an injury to reserve opener Ruturaj Gaikwad meant he got another opportunity to prove himself.

Wasim Jaffer: Sri Lankan Bowlers Bowled Short And Wide And Ishan Kishan Made Full Use Of It

The 23-year-old did just that, smashing 10 boundaries and three sixes to take India to 199 in the first innings. The Men in Blue defended that total by a margin of 62 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-T20I series.

Speaking after the match, Wasim Jaffer said Ishan Kishan was lucky with Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury, a batting-friendly pitch, and a struggling Sri Lankan bowling attack. He, however, also praised the youngster for showing his power, remarking that the Indian team management would be pleased with the performance.

Wasim Jaffer said: “He needed that game. He was lucky that Ruturaj got injured just before the game and he could play that knock. I think Sri Lanka helped him by bowling short and wide. The surface as well, the Lucknow pitch was the ideal batting pitch. The ground was big but I think Sri Lanka bowled him a bit wide and short and he made full use of it.”

“And full credit to him. Such a short guy and he packs a solid punch. On such a big ground as well, he hit some massive sixes, he hits the ball so hard. He’ll be very, very pleased. I think the Indian camp will be very, very pleased because they showed a lot of faith and he grabbed this opportunity with both hands.”

The left-hander Ishan Kishan was handed an opportunity at the top in all three games against Windies and he returned with scores of 35, 2, and 34 in the T20I series.  He had a below-par strike rate of 85.54 in the recent T20I series against the West Indies.

Wasim Jaffer Pleased With Shreyas Iyer’s Performance

Wasim Jaffer was also pleased to see Shreyas Iyer’s performance. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain in IPL 2022, who has been in and out of the team of late, also took charge with a spunky 28-ball 57 after Ishan Kishan’s dismissal. Batting first, IPL 2022’s costliest buy Ishan Kishan plundered a career-best 56-ball-89 while Shreyas Iyer helped himself to an unbeaten 57 off 28 balls.

India scored 199 for two and then restricted Sri Lanka to 137 for six. Skipper Rohit Sharma also scored 44 off 32 balls as Sri Lankan bowlers, without the world’s premier leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga were taken to cleaners by Indian batters.

The former opener Wasim Jaffer said: “Because we’ve got such a bench strength, especially in batting, anybody who gets a game has to make the most of it otherwise there are players in the waiting.”

He added:“Shreyas, obviously, keeps making those performances and I think it was very, very important for him to get a game and play an innings like that as well for his own confidence as well. He played outstandingly well, hit some massive sixes and that’s something which he can do. He can bat No. 3, No. 4 and I am pleased to see him strike the ball so sweetly.”

Shreyas Iyer batted at No. 3 as a replacement for Virat Kohli, who’s on a break from international cricket. The 27-year-old is currently competing with Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav for the middle-order spots. He will want to make a mark in the remaining two T20Is as well.

Further, Wasim Jaffer also opined on India’s strategy of using seven bowlers in the match. He believes skipper Rohit Sharma could use seven bowlers because it was a “perfect game.”

He said: “Seven bowling options is something we don’t see a lot of time… He (Rohit Sharma) could use Deepak Hooda and Venkatesh Iyer because of the game we had. We kind of had the perfect game, apart from the couple of catches we dropped, I think we need to see this kind of team with more bowling options where the batters can bowl [more often], it certainly gives the captain a lot more options in tough situations.”

In bowling, Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/9), Venkatesh Iyer (2/36) got their share of wickets. Yuzvendra Chahal (1/11 in 3 overs) also bowled well.
