Analysis – Apollo Crews’ Intercontinental Championship Reign, Why It Was A Failure

This week on Friday Night Smackdown, Apollo Crews dropped the WWE Intercontinental Championship to Shinsuke Nakamura. At this stage of the title reign of Apollo crews dropping the WWE Intercontinental Championship is a little bit shocker.

Nothing against Shinsuke Nakamura though, he completely deserved this Championship run that he is going to receive. Nakamura did not get pushed for quite a long time. The last time he won this title was two years ago at the extreme rules pay per view event when he defeated Finn Balor for the title.

Analysis – Apollo Crews’ Intercontinental Championship Reign, Why It Was A Failure

Hopefully, Nakamura will have a good title run and it is looking like WWE is building him as a potential main eventer once again. The first time they tried to building was the main eventer was in Royal Rumble 2018 when he won the event but his push did not work very well. Since then he has never been pushed to the main event. This might be the time.

Speaking of Apollo Crews, when he turned heel and challenged Big E for the WWE Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 37, it looks like WWE will push him to a good position now. He was even being accompanied by Commander Azeez who was formerly known as Dabba Kato.

Everybody thought it might be the time of Apollo Crews and he will have a very good time with the WWE intercontinental championship. The beginning was quite well to be honest, but slowly it started to be fading away. The expectation everyone had from this title reign, WWE could not deliver even half of it.

He did have his feud with Big E continued for a month or so. He also defended the title every now and then against wrestlers like Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. But none of the matches were built strongly. Ultimately the title reign turned out to be a very average one.

Apollo Crews

He kept the title on his shoulders for over four months but he did not defend the title in any pay per view event. He did not have any steady feud for the title since winning the championship. Even the last match of him as a champion was not sold by WWE at all. For some unknown reason WWE gave up hopes on him.

It is still not understood why WWE did not utilise the title reign of Apollo Crews when there were a number of WWE stars where is sitting idle in SmackDown. The reign was actually terribly booked, it could have been an excellent title reign but ultimately it was a huge failure. We hope WWE would not stop pushing Crews.

The Current Situation Of The Mid Card Championships In WWE – Analysis

WWE has two mid card Championships on the main roster, WWE intercontinental championship for WWE SmackDown and WWE United States championship for WWE Raw. There was a time that WWE failed to book these titles properly, and there were some great times as well. But what is the situation of these two titles now?

As we can all see, none of the titles have been booked properly for over a couple of months. WWE are struggling to book both Championships properly. Let us look at the situation of both titles right now.

The Current Situation Of The Mid Card Championships In WWE – Analysis

Let us start with the Intercontinental Championship that is in SmackDown right now. The title is currently held by Apollo Crews and he won the title after he defeated Big E at WrestleMania 37.

But after his feud with the current Mr. Money in the Bank was over, he never got a Feud with any other wrestler for the title. In fact he did not defend the title for the last two pay per view events of WWE.

Mid Card

Since Big E is now Mr Money in the Bank, he would not be feuding for the WWE Intercontinental Championship right now. Even after a lot of big names are sitting idle, they are failing to book the Intercontinental Championship properly.

United States championship of RAW was not been defended in any of the pay-per-view events since WrestleMania 37. Sheamus in spite of being the champion, did not defend the title and forth request in a non title match at WrestleMania Backlash pay per view event.

Mid Card

Of course, Sheamus is having a Feud with Humberto Carrillo for the title which is going on for over a couple of months, but it is not being taken seriously at all, neither by WWE nor by the fans. There are wrestlers available who can have a nice bout for the United States Championship but WWE does not seem to be interested to book this title properly.

We hope things changed properly for both titles very soon. We can understand WWE was not giving much attention to anything except the main two World Championships as long as shows where taking place in the Thunderdome. But now the fans are back and everything is returning to normal soon. We seriously hope these two legendary mid card championships the correct treatment now.

WWE Smackdown: Battle For Crown; Big Debut Set For Next Week

One of the most captivating storylines on the current Smackdown scenario is how King Corbin is trying to get back his crown. Shinsuke Nakamura stole his crown and now the King of Strong Style gimmick is back. Ric Boogz is helping him out, each week to retain the same. Corbin was unable to get his crown back again this week. Afterward, Corbin has had enough of Nakamura’s actions.

King Corbin was not happy at all about Shinsuke Nakamura taking his crown, this week. Corbin actually defeated Nakamura in a singles contest on Smackdown but after the match, Nakamura ran away with the crown, yet again. Then Corbin wanted to settle things once and for all. So he approached Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville to demand that the officials should do something about it.

Pearce then said that Corbin and Nakamura will face each other next week in a rematch with the crown hanging in the balance. It’ll be interesting to see who is declared to be the rightful owner of the crown on SmackDown. Corbin debuted the crown after winning the King of the Ring 2019 tournament and ever since then, he’s wearing the same during his WWE entrances.

Commander Azeez will make in-ring debut on Smackdown

Speaking of next week, a big debut will take place on Smackdown in the form of Commander Azeez, who’s been acting as the bodyguard of Apollo Crews for the past couple of months. This week, Kevin Owens and Big E defeated Sami Zayn and Apollo Crews in a tag team match. After this match, Crews mentioned that Big E and Owens had the win due to him being stuck with Sami. Apollo then challenged the two of them to a tag team match against himself and Commander Azeez, next week.

WWE Smackdown: Battle For Crown; Big Debut Set For Next Week 2

After the match was announced, Sami Zayn got in the ring and he took a Nigerian Nail as WWE is trying to make Commander Azeez look very strong. It’s assumed that he will be portrayed as a dominant force during his debut match as the company may want to present him as the next monster on the roster.

Before starting appearances on Smackdown, Azeez competed on Raw Underground as Dabba Kato. As those segments were scrapped, Azeez was introduced at Wrestlemania 37 where he helped Crews winning the Intercontinental Title from Big E.

Smackdown: WWE Books 2 Major Title Matches For Next Week’s Episode

WWE SmackDown will be going up against NBA Playoffs, next week and as a result, they had to come up with a loaded line-up for the show. As learned on this week’s episode, two big title matches were booked for the upcoming episode scheduled to air on FOX. The Intercontinental Championship and the tag team titles will be on the line.

WWE Intercontinental Champion Apollo Crews is set to defend his title against Kevin Owens, proving the earlier reports true. Commander Azeez will be banned from ringside during this coming title match.

Tonight’s SmackDown saw Owens almost gain a win over Crews in a non-title match until Azeez attacked him with the Nigerian Nail to cause the DQ. Owens was choked out with the move who was gasping for air at ringside. WWE Official Adam Pearce later had a segment with Owens in the trainer’s room, who was still selling the Nigerian Nail. The Prizefighter asked for a title shot on next week’s show which was granted by Pearce. The additional stipulation will be that Azeez will be banned from ringside as a result of his reckless action.

Crews retained his Intercontinental Title in a Fatal 4 Way over Owens, Big E, and Sami Zayn. He got the pin on E after a returning Aleister Black put down E with a Black Mass. Both Black and E missed this week’s episode.

Smackdown tag titles will be on the line, next week

Next week’s SmackDown on FOX will also feature a SmackDown Tag Team Championship match where Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio will be defending against The Usos.

Smackdown: WWE Books 2 Major Title Matches For Next Week's Episode 21

During this week’s opener, Jimmy and Jey Uso teamed up for the first time since March 2020, defeating The Street Profits via clean pinfall. Jimmy later approached Adam Pearce, asking to face the winner of the main event tag team title match, and Pearce agreed. In that main event, The Mysterios retained their titles over Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode in a WrestleMania Backlash rematch. Hence, The Usos vs. The Mysterios was confirmed.

The storyline is that Jey Uso is still conflicted about teaming up with his brother as the Universal Champion Roman Reigns is trying to make him feel guilty about reuniting with his brother. Jimmy is all excited about next week’s title shot while Jey is worried about leaving Reigns out for the tag team goal.

Revealed: Plans For Intercontinental Title On WWE Smackdown

The Intercontinental Title is considered to be one of the most prestigious belts to have ever existed in the professional wrestling business. The title held by over a dozen of Hall of Famers has a rich history. At present, the belt is being held by Apollo Crews on Smackdown who had an illustrious feud with Big E over the past few months. Now it’s time for him to move into a new program.

Apollo Crews retained the Intercontinental Title on the SmackDown May 21 episode in a hard-fought fatal four-way match also featuring Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, and Big E. The finish came when Aleister Black showed up to help him get that win by taking out Big E with his pendant move Black Mass. This move will also lead the respective superstars to their next program erasing the question of what could be stored next for Apollo Crews.

Revealed: Plans For Intercontinental Title On WWE Smackdown 39

Dave Meltzer addressed this situation from Smackdown on Wrestling Observer Radio. It appears that Kevin Owens is in line to chase the Intercontinental Title for a bit after this recent development.

Kevin Owens could be the next challenger for Intercontinental Title

He’s been feuding with Sami Zayn since Wrestlemania but it’s time for the unnecessary stretch to stop. The source revealed that while E will move into a new feud with Black, Owens will be heading into the mid-card title picture,

“They give Aleister Black a program with Big E. Big E is out of the Intercontinental thing. I don’t know… so, it could be Kevin Owens [for the IC Title], just go harder with him because Sami is a heel, so Kevin Owens is probably the likely guy [against Apollo Crews].”

Revealed: Plans For Intercontinental Title On WWE Smackdown 40

It should be noted that the situation between E and Black is more than interesting. E is a protected name on TV while Black has just returned from a long hiatus who needs to win the feud by any means. Big E is now preoccupied with a returning Aleister Black. WWE has positioned them against each other where no man can afford to lose. We’ll have to wait and see whether the situation will eventually lead us to.

In the meantime, Kevin Owens is the likely next challenger for the Intercontinental Title on Smackdown, it appears. There’s no update on whether the Prizefighter will win back the gold.

WWE Smackdown Preview (30/04/21): Roman Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan; IC Title Match

WWE is hyping up this week’s episode of SmackDown on FOX with two mega title defenses. The Universal Championship will be on the line where one of the most prolific performers in the history of the modern WWE era could perform for one last time. In the other match, the Intercontinental Title will be defended in a WrestleMania rematch when the show comes, live at the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida.

In the main event of SmackDown, WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns will put his title on the line, one last time against Daniel Bryan. The stipulation mentions Bryan’s career will be on the line where if he loses, he has to leave the blue brand. It isn’t 100% clear if he will still be allowed to move to RAW. But he won’t be able to compete in the Friday Night show.

Last week’s SmackDown was about Cesaro throwing a challenge to Reigns for a title match. Bryan was pushing for that title match to happen. He even pressured Adam Pearce to grant Cesaro that title match but Reigns later confronted Cesaro and Bryan, only to deny Cesaro’s request but then he challenged Bryan to a title match for one last time.

Wrestlemania Backlash 2021: Huge Change Made To WWE Title Match

The Tribal Chief is apparently tired of seeing Bryan on SmackDown and now he wants him to vanish from there. Thus, if the champion retains, his long-time rival won’t be there, anymore. There’s been a lot of talks about Daniel Bryan’s WWE contract coming to an end as this could very well turn out to be his last match in WWE, for now.

While Bryan could leave the company, he might just out over Cesaro some way so that he could be next in line for the Universal Title. The Swiss Superman is gunning for an opportunity for a long time and down the road, a massive collision against Reigns must be waiting.

WWE Smackdown Preview (30/04/21): Roman Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan; IC Title Match 56

In another big match on SmackDown, a WrestleMania 37 rematch will go down as Big E challenges WWE Intercontinental Champion Apollo Crews for the title. Crews won the title from E at WrestleMania 37 Night Two in the first-ever Nigerian Drum Match, with an assist from Commander Azeez fka Raw Underground star Dabba-Kato who’s now acting as a royal guard for the champion.

Last week’s show witnessed Kevin Owens challenging Crews for the title. Crews eventually retained via interference by Azeez. Big E later attacked Crews backstage after which WWE confirmed E vs. Crews for the rematch. With Azeez in presence, ringside shenanigans could be a big factor for the match outcome.

WWE Smackdown Preview (30/04/21): New title matches to be announced?

WWE Smackdown Preview (30/04/21): Roman Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan; IC Title Match 57

A distraction from Reginald and Shayna Baszler, outside the ring, opened the door for a Superkick by Tamina to pick up a huge win against Nia Jax. The previous week, Tamina’s tag partner Natalya pinned Shayna Baszler, clean and this only means that Nattie and Tamina are next in line for the Women’s Tag Team Titles. This match could be announced on SmackDown for WrestleMania Backlash PPV.

Speaking of this, a pair of the blue brand has managed to keep their claims to be the top tandem when they defeated Otis and Chad Gable. Rey Mysterio and Dominik made a major statement via the win over their current rivals and now they should be back in the hunt of the SmackDown Tag Team Titles. Could they be granted the title shot, tonight? We’ll find out when Friday’s hottest show airs with its next episode.

WWE Denied D-Von’s Pitch To Work With Apollo Crews – Claims D-Von

Former nine times WWE Tag Team Champion D-Von Dudley is currently working in WWE as a backstage producer and he has been playing this role for around five years. He is doing his job pretty well as per reports.

After D-Von fought on his last match along with his tag team partner Bubba Ray Dudley, he was offered to play the role of a backstage producer. But D-Von recently revealed that he was not ready to play this role when he was asked first and he wanted a different role in the company.

WWE Denied D-Von’s Pitch To Work With Apollo Crews – Claims D-Von

He said that wanted to work as the tag team partner of Apollo Crews to help him out. But WWE denied his storyline idea and remained focused on what was actually for the former WCW Tag Team Champion. When D-Von recently appeared as a guest on JOFO in the Ring program he told the story;

On becoming a producer and wanting to work with Apollo:

I wanted to work with Apollo. Bubba went his way and I stayed with WWE. I wasn’t ready to become a producer. I still wanted to wrestle. When I was told ‘no’ and they wanted me as a producer, not as talent, I took the job. I was hearing certain rumblings that Apollo needed to step it up and give it his all and give him that little push.

D-Von. Image Credits: Twitter

WWE denying his pitch to work with Apollo in a tag team:

I remember that I volunteered. ‘let me tag with Apollo and help him out.’ I did the same thing with Batista and so many other guys over the years. I thought it would be a great thing to do. I was told ‘no.’ They put him with Titus O’Neil and Titus Worldwide. The opportunity was gone and I was like, ‘Damn.’ I think me and Apollo could’ve done great things, but they said ‘no.’

D-Von. Image Credits: Twitter

Now, here is our take on this matter; we believe D-Von’s approach was right, but not the idea. Him being tag team partner of Apollo Crews would not have been a very nice idea, but there is something else that could make things better and more acceptable.

If WWE brought back his Reverend D-Von gimmick to play the manager role of Apollo, it could be pretty interesting. This Reverend gimmick came to existence in late 2002 but it was short-lived. So, he would have been a better manager for Apollo than becoming a Tag Team. But we are not sure it would come into existence anyway.

WrestleMania 37 Results – Big E vs. Apollo Crews – Dabba-Kato Debuts!

Apollo Crews Defeated Big E In A Nigerian Drum Fight At WrestleMania 37 to Become New WWE Intercontinental Champion

The WWE IC Championship match was scheduled to be Big E vs. Apollo Crews for WrestleMania 37.  It is a first-ever Nigerian Drum Fight. It is not anything like an amazing storyline or similar, but a simple and engaging build-up. Two hungry men both are dying to get some achievements; it could not be made better than this.

WrestleMania 37 Results – Big E vs. Apollo Crews

Apollo Crews has been pretty good since he turned heel. The Nigerian Billed wrestler was pretty talented and he showed it in his previous spell but was not being given the proper booking, or we would rather say, failing to gain any attention.

WrestleMania 37. Big E vs. Apollo Crews

But the recent change of gimmick has earned the guy the much-needed recognition he deserved. And finally, he got a mid-card title match ‘The Grandest of them All.’ Fans had high expectations from this match and with a newly introduced stipulation, the match could not get more interesting than this.

Our fifth match on the card was the Intercontinental Championship match between the two athletes mentioned above. The Nigerian Drum Fight was just another No DQ match with different types of props surrounding the ring. The two men started the match with kendo sticks in hand. They started beating down each other with the canes and Big E came out stronger at the beginning of the match.

The match was very entertaining and fans loved every bit of it. No DQ matches at a stage like WrestleMania bound to be given good booking. And no exception here. But unfortunately, it was not given a longer booking. Only six minutes. The six foot ten inch tall wrestler Dabba-Kato made his debut during this match and helped Apollo to win the title.

The feud does not seem to be finishing right now. And we would not mind if it continues for a little longer. Apollo’s new gimmick is fun to watch and Big E is also doing his best to keep things alive. After WrestleMania 37, we would now love to see some more stipulated matches between these two individuals.

WWE Wrestlemania 37: Nigerian Drum Match; Logan Paul Appearance & More Set

The Intercontinental Championship match at WrestleMania 37 Night II featuring the champion Big E and Apollo Crews will now be a Nigerian Drum Match.

As seen on SmackDown, Crews revealed the stipulation of the match during a backstage segment. He noted that this ancient stipulation was created by his ancestors for people who have been wrong their entire life so that they can make things right. He said there will be no rules and no limitations.

There will be beatings so loud that it will sound like the beating of drums. While the words from him essentially noted that it would be a No DQ match, there’s not much news on what kind of match this would be at WrestleMania 37. We haven’t previously seen a Nigerian Drum Match in the history of WWE.

Wrestlemania 37: Edge’s Growing Age Major Issue For WWE?

WWE Wrestlemania 37: Nigerian Drum Match; Logan Paul Appearance & More Set 75

WrestleMania 37 is also likely to feature five teams battling for the Women’s Tag Team Championships opportunity. The challenger teams could be going at it on Night One to determine the new number-one contenders for WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Nia Jax for a title match on Night Two.

Reports have been out, earlier this week that WWE has plans for a multi-team match on Night One to determine new challengers for the champions on Night Two. This week’s SmackDown featured a segment in the ring where the champions Jax and Baszler, Natalya and Tamina Snuka, The Riott Squad, Lana and Naomi, and Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke involved in a big brawl. Carmella also watched from backstage who apparently had Billie Kay to be her tag team partner, although it’s yet to be confirmed.

So it seems like Night One of WrestleMania 37 will feature Carmella and Kay vs. Lana and Naomi vs. Tamina and Natalya vs. Rose and Brooke vs. The Riott Squad, where the winners will challenge Jax and Baszler for the titles, the next night. WWE hasn’t confirmed this match, till now.

Rhea Ripley’s Wrestlemania 37 Plans Changed By WWE

SmackDown also featured YouTube star and social media influencer Logan Paul accept Sami Zayn’s invitation for WrestleMania 37. WWE hasn’t provided any official update on what Paul will be doing during Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens. But we can assume that he would be standing at Zayn’s corner. He could also play the role of special enforcer or guest referee.

WWE Smackdown Preview (26/02/21): Edge-Roman Reigns; Chamber Fallouts

SmackDown moves along on the way to WrestleMania 37 following an exciting Elimination Chamber edition, this past Sunday night. We can expect the builds to begin for the last stop before Mania that is Fastlane 2021, scheduled for March. Plus, the two WrestleMania main-eventers will be on the show to continue the ongoing storyline when tonight’s show airs from the Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Unlike the former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre from Raw, the Universal Champion from SmackDown wasn’t put through tests inside the Elimination Chamber. Roman Reigns had the utmost privilege to face a weary number-one contender after the Chamber match, instead. He won the match, easily after locking in the Guillotine Chokehold submission hold.

But the winning moments were cut short by Royal Rumble match winner Edge who connected with a wicked Spear to confirm that he is coming after the Universal Championship at WrestleMania. Now that the match has been made official for the Show of Shows, Edge and Reigns will be involved in a full-fledged rivalry until April. They both are advertised to appear on SmackDown and we can’t wait to see how things will unfold.

Speaking of Rumble winners leads us to the Women’s counterpart winner, Bianca Belair. She is yet to make her choice except for the rumors which mention that she would be facing SmackDown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks at WrestleMania 37. Meanwhile, these two teamed up at Elimination Chamber for a failed attempt to gain the Women’s Tag Team Championships from Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler.

The loss didn’t come through a clean pinfall as Reginald got involved in the scene. For weeks now, Carmella’s sommelier has been trying to make run-ins between Belair and Banks to make things interesting on SmackDown. Carmella is obviously not happy with such behavior from someone who works for her. We guess Reginald could be up for paying a penalty for the disturbances, he keeps on creating.

Apollo Crews is a man on a mission over gaining the Intercontinental Championship. He lost when the one-on-one opportunity was provided to him but now he is gunning for another shot that caused a mega heel-turn, last week. As seen last Friday night, Crews took out Shinsuke Nakamura before focusing on the champion Big E. A few shots through the steel ring steps injured E as he needed medical attention. We expect to receive medical updates for him on this week’s SmackDown alongside the next title defense reserved.
