Lionel Messi Bannned For 3 Months From International Football By CONMEBOL

Messi who alleged the  Copa to be corrupt has been banned for his comments on CONMEBOL and also fined $50,000

Argentina star, Lionel Messi was sent off for an altercation with Chile’s Gary Medel. The happening took place in the third-place match between Argentina and Chile in the Copa America 2019.

Lionel Messi, CONMEBOL
Lionel Messi saw a red card during the third-place match in Copa America 2019

After the match in an interview, Messi showed his anger against the referees and the federation by alleging them of corruption. He said: “We don’t have to be part of this corruption. They have showed us a lack of respect throughout this tournament. Sadly, the corruption, the referees, they don’t allow people to enjoy football, they ruined it a bit.

“I think the cup is fixed for Brazil,” he said. “I hope VAR and the referees have nothing to do in this final and that Peru can compete because they have the team to do so, although I think it’s difficult.”

Lionel Messi reportedly has seven days to appeal against the verdict of his suspension. A 3-month International ban for the FC Barcelona forward means he is going to miss friendly games for Argentina in September against Chile and Mexico in the United States. He is also going to miss a friendly against Germany in October.

Argentina lost the semifinals of the Copa America 2-0 to Brazil, and even after that match, Messi had made a controversial statement to the press. Messi criticized the refereeing decisions made and also the VAR. He said, “They were not better than us. They found the net early and the second goal came from a penalty [to Aguero] they didn’t award,” Messi told reporters.

“They had booked a lot of bullsh*t, but they didn’t even check the VAR, that’s incredible.”

The Argentine football federation also complained about the refereeing errors in the match which had cost Argentina a place in the finals.

Brazil went on to win the Copa America 2019, thrashing Peru 3-1 in the finals. Messi was in the subject to a lot of criticism by the Brazilian players after the comments he made.
