WWE NXT introduced a pair of tag team titles for the Women’s Division to distinguish themselves from the main roster, completely. Reports suggest that the officials reportedly wanted to debut those new belts, a while back. But for some reason, the process was obstructed and the inauguration of the titles didn’t fall in line with the Dusty Classic tourney.
This week’s episode of WWE NXT saw the General Manager William Regal reveal the new straps and naming Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez as the inaugural NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions. They earned the belts after their recent win in the first-ever Women’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. The moment didn’t last long as Kai and Gonzalez then lost the belts to Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart in a title match, later on, in the show.

It was then reported on Wrestling Observer Live that WWE had the idea for WWE NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles from a while ago. The original plan was for the Women’s Dusty Classic winners to receive those titles, but for some unknown reason WWE carried out that tournament in a hurried manner as the Men’s Dusty Classic was also underway earlier this year.

There’s no confirmation was provided on why the Women’s Dusty Classic was rushed, but WWE NXT Women’s Tag Team Championships weren’t ready in time for the tournament finals at “Takeover: Vengeance Day,” on February 14. WWE then crowned Kai and Gonzalez as the winners to defeat Moon and Blackheart in the tournament finals.
They shared the same Dusty Classic Cup trophy with the men’s winners. Instead of getting tag titles, they have earned a title shot from WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler. Then WWE must have come up with the screwjob idea after WWE NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles were finalized.
As a result, Baszler and Jax retained their titles over Kai and Gonzalez in an illegal manner, setting up last night’s title reveal by Regal. But then they immediately took the titles off Kai and Gonzalez. Perhaps, it would have something to do with Gonzalez heading into a singles feud with NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai as these two could be competing in a title match at NXT TakeOver Stand and Deliver.
As of now, WWE’s plans are not clear for Moon and Blackheart during their first reign with WWE NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles. They could lock horns for the belts with Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell at the upcoming NXT Takeover during WrestleMania 37 Week.
