Deepak Chahar’s Splendid Effort Goes In Vain As India Suffer 4-Run Defeat Against Proteas In Cape Town

Deepak Chahar, Shikhar Dhawan, and Virat Kohli’s fifties went in vain. Shikhar Dhawan, the veteran Indian opener, on Sunday notched up his second fifty of the ongoing ODI series to put India in command during the 287-chase against South Africa at Cape Town. The left-handed opener reached his 35th half-century in the format and hit five fours and a six en route to the landmark before being dismissed.

In what was another quickfire knock from pace all-rounder, Deepak Chahar who scored a fine 50, but couldn’t see India home for a consolation win in Cape Town. Chasing 287 to salvage a disastrous South Africa tour with a win, India was jolted with an early blow in the form of KL Rahul, who perished for nine after his willow took a thick outside edge and it went straight to Janneman Malan at first slip. The Indian run-chase was steadied by Virat Kohli, who initially played second fiddle but accelerated his innings with time.

Shikhar Dhawan And Virat Kohli Combination Now Has 28 Fifty Plus Stands

A fifty partnership between Shikhar Dhawan & Virat Kohli helped India in going past the 100 mark. The Delhi batting pair, meanwhile, went past MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina on the list of most 50-plus partnerships for India by a left-right-handed pair. The Shikhar Dhawan-Virus Kohli combination now has 28 50-plus stands under its belt, one more than MS Dhoni & Suresh Raina’s tally of 27.

The duo of Sourav Ganguly & Sachin Tendulkar heads the list with 55 fifty-plus partnerships to its name, followed by Rohit Sharma & Shikhar Dhawan (32) and Sourav Ganguly & Rahul Dravid (29). Half-centuries by Virat Kohli (65), Shikhar Dhawan (61), and Deepak Chahar (54) went in vain as India suffered a heartbreaking four-run loss against South Africa in the third and final ODI at Newlands, Cape Town.

Shikhar Dhawan Equaled Virender Sehwag’s Record For Most 50 Plus Scores For India In ODIs

Shikhar Dhawan, who departed after scoring 61 from 73 deliveries, also ticked off a personal milestone. He equaled former India opener Virender Sehwag for most fifty-plus scores for India in the ODI format. Both the openers have 52 fifty-plus innings to their name.

Earlier, Quinton de Kock hit a brilliant century for South Africa to help them post a challenging total on the scoreboard. Quinton de Kock made 124 off 130 balls to lift his team from 70 for three. He teamed up with Rassie van der Dussen (52) in a fourth-wicket stand of 144.

On the bowling front, Prasidh Krishna, one of four changes in the Indian team, took three for 59 while Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar took two wickets each. Suryakumar Yadav, Jayant Yadav, Deepak Chahar, and Prasidh Krishna came into the Indian team in place of Venkatesh Iyer, Shardul Thakur, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Seeking a clean sweep in the three-match series, South Africa decided to go with just one change, giving chance to all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius in place left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.

Quinton de Kock Scores 6th Ton Against India And 17th Of His ODI Career; Breaks Virender Sehwag’s Record And Joins Ab de Villiers In Elite List

Quinton de Kock, the South African wicketkeeper-batsman scored an impressive century against India in the third and final ODI of the series in Cape Town on Sunday to not just surpass legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar, but also break Virender Sehwag’s feat to equal a massive ODI record held by AB de Villiers.

With 17 career tons, he surpassed former Australian legendary keeper Adam Gilchrist to take the second spot for most centuries as a wicketkeeper in ODIs. Former Sri Lankan wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara still stands atop with 23 tons.

Quinton de Kock Scores 124 As South Africa Wins By 4 Runs In The 3rd ODI

Quinton de Kock laced nine boundaries and two sixes to reach the triple-figure mark in 109 deliveries at the Newlands, which helped revive South Africa from 70 for three in 12.2 overs to 287 in 49.5 overs. MOM and MOS Quinton de Kock was finally dismissed after scoring 124 off 130 balls in an innings studded with 12 fours and 2 sixes.

With the century, Quinton de Kock surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to take the top spot alongside compatriot former Protea skipper AB de Villiers for most centuries in India-South Africa ODI ties. Sachin Tendulkar had five such scores to his name while Quinton de Kock now has six centuries against India in ODIs.

The tally of six centuries is also the joint second-most against India in the format, alongside Australian great Ricky Ponting and former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara. Sanath Jayasuriya stands atop with seven tons in 85 innings against India.

Quinton de Kock Also Broke Virender Sehwag’s Record To Be Quickest Batsman To Register 6 Tons Against A Single Opponent

Quinton de Kock also broke another former Indian cricketer, Virender Sehwag’s feat for being the quickest batter to six centuries against a single opponent. He reached the feat in just 16 innings against India while Virender Sehwag had taken 23 innings to score his sixth ton against New Zealand.

This ton is Quinton de Kock’s 17 century in ODIs having played 127 games in the 50-over format for the Proteas. Out of those 17, six centuries have come against India despite playing just 16 games against the Men in Blue.

South Africa’s clean sweep over India in the ODIs was completed on the back of a chanceless century from Quinton de Kock and a chancy but classy half-century from Rassie van der Dussen, which carried the hosts to 287 despite a late collapse of 7 for 73.

Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli then set up India’s chase with the fifties, but neither could convert it into a big one. And though No. 7 Deepak Chahar threatened to flip the script with a barrage of boundaries in a knock of 54 off 34 balls – his second successive fifty in ODI cricket – South Africa’s seamers held their nerve and closed out the match.

South Africa 287 (de Kock 124, van der Dussen 52, Prasidh 3-59) beat India 283 (Kohli 65, Dhawan 61, Chahar 54, Phehlukwayo 3-40, Ngidi 3-58) by four runs

Virat Kohli Registers 14th ODI Duck; Goes Past Rahul Dravid And Rohit Sharma’s Tally

Virat Kohli was dismissed without scoring in the second ODI against and in South Africa at the Boland Park in Paarl on Friday. Former India captain Virat Kohli is not going through the best phases of his career.

The right-hander, who has already earned the status of a modern-day great from many experts, went past the likes of Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma in an unwanted list. Virat Kohli was dismissed for a fifth-ball duck.

Virat Kohli Dismissed Without Scoring In 2nd ODI, Goes Past Rahul Dravid And Rohit Sharma’s Tally Of 13 Ducks In ODIs

Virat Kohli was dismissed without scoring in the second ODI against South Africa at the Boland Park in Paarl on Friday. This was the 14th duck in Virat Kohli’s ODI career. He went past Rahul Dravid, the current India head coach, and Rohit Sharma, the current India white-ball skipper. Both Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma have 13 ODI ducks to their names.

Virat Kohli is currently joint fourth in the list of most ducks in 50-overs cricket by Indians along with Suresh Raina and Virender Sehwag. The top three in the list of most ducks registered by Indian batters batting between No.1 to 7 are Sachin Tendulkar (20), Yuvraj Singh (18), and Sourav Ganguly (16).

It was Virat Kohli’s 14th duck in One Day Internationals and Keshav Maharaj became the first spinner to dismiss Virat Kohli for a duck in the 50-over format. In the first ODI, Virat Kohli had achieved another milestone as became the Indian batsman with the most number of ODI runs away from home, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar.

MOST DUCKS FOR INDIA IN ODI CRICKET

  1. Sachin Tendulkar – 20 ducks
  2. Javagal Srinath – 19 ducks
  3. Anil Kumble – 18 ducks
  4. Yuvraj Singh – 18 ducks
  5. Harbhajan Singh – 17 ducks
  6. Sourav Ganguly – 16 ducks
  7. Zaheer Khan – 14 ducks
  8. Virat Kohli – 14 ducks
  9. Suresh Raina – 14 ducks
  10. Virender Sehwag – 14 ducks
  11. Rahul Dravid – 13 ducks
  12. Kapil Dev – 13 ducks

The 33-year-old, who stepped down as India’s Test captain and is playing the ongoing ODI series only as a batter after five years, was out for a five-ball duck when he tried to drive a Keshav Maharaj delivery but ended up providing a simple catch to the cover fielder.

Virat Kohli Also Equaled His Longest Streak Without An ODI Ton Since August 2019

Virat Kohli also equalled his longest streak (in terms of innings) without an ODI hundred. The second ODI marked the 17th straight occasion when he went without scoring a century. The last ODI hundred he scored was in West Indies in August 2019. The last time he went 17 innings without getting to three figures was between the 2011 World Cup in February to September of that same year.

If Virat Kohli doesn’t score a hundred in the third and final ODI against South Africa, then it will be his longest streak without an ODI ton.

Virat Kohli’s lean patch is not only restricted to white-ball cricket. In fact, it is more prominent in Tests. The prolific right-hander is averaging well under 30 in the last couple of years and his last hundred came in November 2019 against Bangladesh, which incidentally was his last international century.

India lost the second ODI by 7 wickets to the Proteas, who have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. The third and final ODI will be played on Sunday, January 23 at the Newlands in Cape Town.

India batted first and put up 287 for 6 as Rishabh Pant top-scored with 85 while KL Rahul contributed 55. In response, South African openers Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock added 132 for the opening wicket as the Proteas eased to victory by seven wickets. Janneman Malan was the home team’s top-scorer with 91 off 108 while his senior opening partner Quinton de Kock made 78 off 66 balls.

Brief Score: 2nd ODI: South Africa 288 for 3 (Malan 91, de Kock 78) beat India 287 for 6 (Rishabh Pant 85, KL Rahul 55, Shamsi 2-57) by seven wickets

Sachin Tendulkar had led India Legends to victory at the inaugural Road Safety World Series 2020-21. India Legends beat Sri Lanka Legends in the final of the tournament to lift the inaugural title. Asked whether even Sachin Tendulkar has not been paid by the organizers, the source confirmed the same.

“Yes, Sachin is among many cricketers who took part in the tournament, who haven’t been paid by the organisers. And one needs to get in touch with a Ravi Gaikwad, who was the premier organizer.”

Yusuf Pathan, Subramaniam Badrinath, and Irfan Pathan also tested positive for COVID after playing in the tournament for India Legends besides Sachin Tendulkar who was the first person to test Covid positive. The inaugural tournament, which was held mostly in two parts in 2020 and 2021 committed 10 percent to every player upon signing, another 40 percent was supposed to be paid by February 25, 2021, and the remaining 50 percent by March 31, 2021. Ravi Gaikwad was contacted repeatedly for his statement on the alleged delay in payments but he did not respond to either calls or text messages.

Yusuf Pathan’s sensational 40-ball 80 and captain Mohammed Kaif’s 42* off 37 balls have helped the India Maharajas beat Asian Lions by six wickets. Yusuf Pathan’s blitz comprised of five sixes and nine fours as his counter-attacking innings put India in a commanding position after a woeful start.

Rohit Sharma Should Be Obviously Partnered By Shikhar Dhawan As An Opener In 2023 ODI World Cup Reckons JP Duminy

Rohit Sharma is an automatic pick for the opener’s slot in the 2023 ODI World Cup but who is the best fit to partner him is something that will be answered over the course of the next 12 months. The 2023 World Cup is still less than a year away but all participating teams are already planning what their perfect XI is going to be.

For India, it’s a problem of plenty as finalizing a squad with so many promising youngsters and established seniors could cause a few selections headaches. The one position that has always been up for debate is that of the opener.

Rohit Sharma Should Be Obviously Partnered By Shikhar Dhawan As Opener: JP Duminy

Former South Africa batter JP Duminy, however, knows his pick to partner Rohit Sharma. JP Duminy feels that although the competition is stiff for the position, he would go with Shikhar Dhawan, due to his solid record and consistency in ODIs.

At 36, Shikhar Dhawan is in the twilight of his career. Last July, he led a second-string Indian side to Sri Lanka and hoped to utilize the tour to make his place “stronger” for the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Shikhar Dhawan has stepped up his T20 game in the last couple of years, but the selectors preferred Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Ishan Kishan as their openers for the global tournament, before the unceremonious exit at the group stage of the T20I WC made the selectors bring back Shikhar Dhawan for South Africa ODIs.

In the 1st ODI against the Proteas, on a sluggish wicket, he scored 79 off 84 to keep India on track in the chase and showed he can still thrive under pressure, but his effort went in vain as the middle order batsmen faltered again.

The pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma has proved to be a fruitful alliance for India, having scored 4978 runs in 110 innings in partnerships. This is the fourth-highest of all time and second-highest for India after Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly.

“He has been prolific for India in this format since 2019. So that’s a long period of time and if anyone is doing it as consistently as he is, you would think it would be given that he would be opening the batting for India at the World Cup. I think the question mark is always going to be who is going to be his partner. And I think it’s an obvious one in Rohit Sharma,” JP Duminy said.

In the last three years, Shikhar Dhawan has been in great nick in the 50-over format, scoring 1194 runs in 28 matches at a healthy average of 49.75 including two centuries and nine fifties.

At the same time, his form in T20Is has taken a dip with 527 runs from 22 games. Based on such impressive numbers, JP Duminy has no doubt that the Shikhar Dhawan-Rohit Sharma pair will open for India at next year’s World Cup and expects the left-handed batter to score heavily for India.

JP Duminy: KL Rahul Has Played Well In The Middle Order And Should Bat There

JP Duminy added that KL Rahul, who is also fighting for the opening slot, should bat in the middle order.

“Where does a KL Rahul slot in. We have seen him play really well in that middle order. So whose place does he take? I get that those are the questions and conditions are going to be the question mark around that. Dhawan, as we highlighted, has been prolific.”

“Not only from 2019, but he has also been consistent for a long period of time. He certainly warrants that position and I am pretty sure he is going to be there scoring runs for India,” JP Duminy pointed out.

Rohit Sharma, India’s white-ball captain is recovering well from his left hamstring injury and has a bright chance of making a comeback for the six-match home limited-overs series against the West Indies next month. The series against the West Indies comprises three ODIs and as many T20 internationals. The one-dayers will be played from February 6 to 12, followed by the T20Is from February 15 to 20.

Rohit Sharma has scored 7238 runs as an ODI opener with an average of 57.44 in 141 matches. This includes 27 centuries and 31 half-centuries. He also holds the record of three double tons as an ODI opener.

His highest score of 264 still seems unbreakable. He achieved this milestone against Sri Lanka in 2014. The first double ton came against Australia in 2013 where he scored 209 runs in an innings. He hit the third double hundred when he was the captain during the match against Sri Lanka in 2017.

Sachin Tendulkar Congratulates Virat Kohli On His Successful Stint As A Test Captain

Virat Kohli who stepped down as the Test captain was congratulated by legendary former Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar, an ex-skipper himself, and currently, the leading ODI and Test run-getter and the batsman who has scored most tons.

Virat Kohli on Saturday announced that he is stepping down as the captain of the Indian Test team. Last year, the 33-year-old had stepped down as the T20I captain and then he was removed as the ODI leader as the selectors wanted one captain for the white-ball format.

Sachin Tendulkar Congratulated Virat Kohli For His Successful Stint As Captain Praising Him For Giving 100%

Virat Kohli on Saturday stunned the cricking world with his sudden decision of relinquishing captaincy in Tests. His decision comes after Team India lost the 3-match Test series to South Africa 2-1. Back in 2014, he led India for the first time in the longest format of the game after which he took the team to newer heights in the next seven years. Yuvraj Singh and Mayank Agarwal took to social media site Twitter and praised him.

“Congratulations on a successful stint as a captain, @imVkohli. You always gave 100% for the team and you always will. Wishing you all the very best for the future,” tweeted Sachin Tendulkar.

Meanwhile, India batter Mayank Agarwal took to his Twitter and posted some pictures with Virat Kohli and wrote, “Congratulations @imVkohli on a fantastic term as captain. It was an absolute honour playing under your leadership. Someone who led by example. You have created a winning mentality in everyone. Your passion and dedication to the game are an inspiration. Thank you, Skips.”

Former India batter Yuvraj Singh also wrote, “It’s been a remarkable journey King Kohli @imVkohli! Very few have been able to achieve what you have. Gave his all and played like a true champion each time. May you grow from strength to strength! Onwards and upwards.”

Virat Kohli led in 68 Test matches out of which the team registered victory in 40 games. 17 of them ended in a draw and lost 11 face-offs. Virat Kohli won 40 matches, which is 13 more than MS Dhoni. Virat Kohli captained India in 25 series. He won 18, lost six, and drew one series. Under him, India won 16 away Tests – the most for India, ahead of Sourav Ganguly who had won 11.

Virat Kohli Resigns As Most Successful Indian Test Skipper

Virat Kohli holds the record for most Test appearances as India Test captain (68) and he also holds the record for most Test wins by an Indian captain (40). Only Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting, and Steve Waugh have won more matches than Kohli as captain in Test cricket.

Announcing his decision on Twitter to leave Test captaincy, Kohli said: “It’s been 7 years of hard work, toil, and relentless perseverance every day to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test Captain of India, it’s now.”

“There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey, but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief. I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it’s not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to my team.”

“I want to thank the BCCI for giving me the opportunity to lead my country for such a long period of time and more importantly to all the teammates who bought into the vision I bad for the team from day one and never gave up in any situation. You guys have made this journey so memorable and beautiful.”

“To Ravi Bhai and the support group who were the engine behind this vehicle that moved us upwards in Test Cricket consistently, you all have played a massive role in bringing this vision to life. Lastly, a big thank you to MS Dhoni who believed in me as a Captain and found me to be an able individual who could take Indian Cricket forward,” he added.

Virat Kohli had first led the side in Test cricket in 2014 against Australia. His last game as captain was the Cape Town Test in South Africa, which India lost by seven wickets. Filling the shoes of MS Dhoni was not going to be easy, but Virat Kohli took leadership by storm, and quickly, he cemented himself as one of the best thinkers the country has seen in Test cricket.

The leadership also brought out the best in Virat Kohli and it saw the batter registering seven double-centuries in the longest format of the game. Virat Kohli also holds the record for scoring most Test centuries (20) as India captain.

Jay Shah Trying To Onboard Sachin Tendulkar For A Role In Indian Cricket

The BCCI secretary Jay Shah is trying to convince the legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar to take a role in Indian cricket. Notable that Sachin Tendulkar was retired from all forms of cricket hasn’t taken any big coaching assignments, barring a mentorship role with Mumbai Indians.

Though there are lots of reports circulating that BCCI tried to convince to take a key role in Indian cricket. In an interview, the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly also told the same that he is trying hard to convince his former opening partner to take a coaching role for the betterment of Indian cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar had few stints with Mumbai Indians as mentor

Recently VVS Laxman has taken charge of NCA head. Former India batter moved from Hyderabad to Bengaluru for the job. Notable that the position was vacant that Rahul Dravid, who was earlier head of NCA, took the job of India head coach. So BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah convinced Laxman to take up the role. Laxman has given up all his media commitments and also resigned from the role of SRH mentor to avoid any conflict of interest scenario.

Jay Shah Trying To Onboard Sachin Tendulkar For A Role In Indian Cricket 1

“He’s (Shah) been off the media radar but absolutely clear about what is the right thing to do. Little things that matter. For instance, appointing Rahul Dravid as head coach, ensuring someone of the stature of VVS Laxman gets associated with the National Cricket Academy (NCA). We’re told he’s now trying to convince Sachin Tendulkar to get into some role in the near future,” as told by some BCCI officials.

Sachin Tendulkar’s stature as a player is not a secret for anyone. As the legendary cricketer holds almost every batting record to his name. Sachin scored 15921 runs in 200 Test matches with an average of 53.78 which includes 51 hundreds while in ODIs he scored 18426 runs in 463 matches with 49 hundreds.

Though his resume doesn’t include any big coaching role. 48-year old had some stints with Mumbai Indians as a mentor for which he played in 6 seasons. If he takes a coaching role in NCA or Indian cricket, he will have to give up his mentoring role for Mumbai Indians.

Sunil Gavaskar Reckons That If India Wins The 2nd Test It Will Be A Fantastic Gift On Kapil Dev’s Birthday

Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer, besides an ex-captain has urged the Indian team to win the 2nd Test at Johannesburg for the country’s ‘greatest cricketer’ Kapil Dev, but at present, it seems likely that South Africa would emerge victoriously.

The second Test match between India and South Africa at Johannesburg is tantalizingly poised heading into the fourth and what promises to be the final day. South Africa is 122 runs away from levelling the series 1-1, while India needs eight wickets from taking an unassailable 2-0 lead and registering their maiden Test series win in the country.

Sunil Gavaskar Reckons That If India Wins The 2nd Test It Will Be A Fantastic Gift On Kapil Dev’s Birthday (6th January)

With South Africa chasing a target of 240, one that needs them to put up their best batting display of the series, they will be up for a stiff challenge against a fiercely-determined Indian bowling unit. And while at present, it seems likely that South Africa would emerge victoriously, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Indian team to win the Johannesburg for the country’s ‘greatest cricketer’ Kapil Dev.

“India has never won a series here. In fact, India has won very few Test matches here. The last time India came here in 2018, they won the one-day series but they lost the Test series 2-1. So this is going to be huge for India,” Sunil Gavaskar said during the lunch interval of Day 3.

“And the way I look at it is, I mean, weather permitting… tomorrow happens to be the birthday in my view of India’s greatest cricketer – Kapil Dev. So I think it will be wonderful gift for Kapil from this Indian team. There are many admirers of Kapil Dev in this team. So from this team to Kapil Dev, that will be a fantastic present.”

Like Sunil Gavaskar rightly mentioned, today, January 6 is the great Kapil Dev’s birthday. The legendary all-rounder, who is the country’s first-ever World Cup-winning captain turns 63.

In the year 2000, Wisden named Kapil Dev as the country’s greatest cricketer, beating the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar to the distinction. Kapil Dev led the Indian cricket team to a historic World Cup win in 1983, an achievement that was recently captured in the recently-released Bollywood Blockbuster ‘83’.

South Africa 122 Runs Away From Leveling Series While India Needs 8 Wickets To Take An Unassailable Lead

Sunil Gavaskar was an integral part of Kapil Dev’s 1983 team that won the historic first ODI World Cup trophy at Lords, beating the mighty West Indies in the final. Sunil Gavaskar also reckons that since India has never gone on to win a series in South Africa, this probable win will be huge for Indian cricket. The 72-year old Sunil Gavaskar feels that Team India can give a historic win as a gift to the legendary captain on his birthday.

South Africa is 122 runs away from levelling the series 1-1, while India needs eight wickets from taking an unassailable 2-0 lead and registering their maiden Test series win in the country. The start of the fourth and penultimate day’s play in the second Test between India and South Africa was on Thursday delayed because of rain.

The hosts, chasing a target of 240, went to stumps at 118-2, with Dean Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen amidst a 25-run partnership. Skipper Dean Elgar (46), who took many a blow on his body, and Rassie van der Dussen (11) will resume the home chase.

Brief Scores:

India: 202 and 266 in 60.1 overs (A Rahane 58, C Pujara 53; K Rabada 3/73, M Jansen 3/67, L Ngidi 3/43).

South Africa: 202 and 118 for 2 in 40 overs. (D Elgar 46 batting, A Markram 34, R Ashwin 1/14, S Thakur 1/24).

Virat Kohli Can Show A Bit More Patience: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra, who was part of that famous SCG Test where Sachin Tendulkar scored 241, feels that although he does not expect Virat Kohli to take up Sachin Tendulkar’s approach, the India captain can show a little more patience to get his groove back, weighing in on Virat Kohli’s dismissals.

Given Virat Kohli’s knack of nicking the ball outside off stump that is leading to his repeated dismissals, many feel that the India captain should try and emulate the approach Sachin Tendulkar took up during his epic knock of 241 not out at the 2004 Sydney Test against Australia.

Aakash Chopra: Virat Kohli Can Show A Bit More Patience

Like Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar too found himself getting out trying to play shots outside off. The legendary former batsman Sachin Tendulkar did not hit a single cover drive, en route to playing out one of the most disciplined innings ever seen.

“Kohli can show a bit more patience. Remember the new year’s Test match, Sydney 2004 when Sachin Tendulkar was getting out driving and then he didn’t play a single drive. I’m not saying go down that road because Sachin had more shots as compared to Virat but then, this is the recipe,” Aakash Chopra said on the Byju’s Cricket Live Show on Star Sports on Day 1 of the Johannesburg Test between India and South Africa on Monday.

However, with Virat Kohli not playing the 2nd Test owing to a back spasm, his cricketing start to the new year will now begin on January 11, the third Test at Cape Town.

Ajinkya Rahane And Cheteshwar Pujara Fell Cheaply Yet Again, Mohammed Siraj Injured In The Penultimate Over

Having gone two whole years without scoring a century, Virat Kohli would aim to get 2022 off to a cracking start at Newlands. Aakash Chopra feels the India captain does not have too many weaknesses and reckons a little more application can see the India skipper back to his rollicking form. Aakash Chopra spoke about Virat Kohli’s weaknesses and strengths.

“I don’t think Kohli has too much of an issue playing the bouncers. It’s just about knowing where your off-stump is. Trusting the bounce a little more so you can leave the ball a little more. It doesn’t necessarily have to be on line. You don’t even need to misread the line; you’re not going to get bowled because the ball will be going over the stumps,” added Aakash Chopra.

There was no Virat Kohli to start with, and senior out of form batters Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane fell cheaply, off successive deliveries. Mohammed Siraj then hobbled off holding his right hamstring in the penultimate over of the day. The start was in stark contrast to the Centurion Test, where the visitors took control early and delivered an impressive win.

India’s positives were stand-in skipper KL Rahul grinding out a fifty, after his match-winning century in the first Test, and Ravichandran Ashwin (46) helping the team, having elected to bat, past 200. South Africa may have won extra credits by dismissing India for 202 but they are still 167 runs in the arrears with a barely-experienced batting line-up pitted against a vastly experienced bowling attack.

Marco Jansen (4/31), Kagiso Rabada (3/64), and Duanne Olivier (3/64) were outstanding as they picked up wickets at regular intervals to not allow the tourists to get into any rhythm. India’s stand-in captain KL Rahul top-scored with a knock of 50, but it was Ravichandran Ashwin’s attacking 46 that helped India to 202, before being bowled out.
