Danish Kaneria Believes Wasim Khan’s Resignation As PCB CEO A ‘Blessing In Disguise’

Danish Kaneria, former Pakistan leg spinner slammed outgoing CEO Wasim Khan and believes his departure is a blessing for Pakistan cricket. Wasim Khan stepped down as the CEO of the PCB on Wednesday and his resignation was accepted.

Wasim Khan, who took charge as the PCB CEO in 2019, vacated the position four months before the end of his contract. He revealed that it has been an honor to serve Pakistan cricket but felt the time was to move on and spend more time with his family.

Danish Kaneria Questions Wasim Khan’s Role In Pakistan’s Improvement As The Leg Spinner Blames Him For Failure To Convince England To Tour Pakistan

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Danish Kaneria felt Wasim Khan hardly did anything good for Pakistan cricket. The 40-year-old accused the former CEO of being power-hungry and wealth-oriented. Danish Kaneria also blamed Wasim Khan for failing to convince England to tour Pakistan.

Pakistan’s cricket board said its chief executive had resigned, two weeks after New Zealand and England abandoned tours in the country over security concerns. New Zealand Cricket called off their first tour of Pakistan in 18 years just as the first ODI was due to start in Rawalpindi earlier this month.

Their decision was swiftly followed by England’s cancellation of a planned short tour too next month. PCB gave no reason for Wasim Khan’s resignation, but said it would meet later to “consider the matter”.

“What has Wasim Khan done for Pakistan cricket? He has only ruined Pakistan cricket by running behind money. When Ramiz bhai requested him to work for 30% less money, he declined as the powers were snatched away from him. Khan’s misuse of power damaged and harmed Pakistan cricket. If he had such contacts with England, why couldn’t he convince them to tour Pakistan?”

Pakistan’s much-anticipated home season this year was in a hapless situation as both New Zealand and England withdrew from their scheduled tours of the nation. The decision by both cricketing boards faced severe backlash from the PCB, who had to cope with massive financial losses.

Danish Kaneria Backs Aaqib Javed To Become Director Of Pakistan Cricket

Danish Kaneria said he expects the PCB chairman Ramiz Raja to create a director’s position and dissolve the CEO’s spot. He tipped former paceman, Aaqib Javed, to fit well in the new position, stating he has great credibility and will work well with Ramiz Raja.

“I predict Ramiz bhai to do away with the CEO position and expect Aaqib Javed to occupy the director’s position. He has done wonders as he has worked with Lahore Qalanders. I have also worked with Javed in the National Cricket Academy and he is a zero-tolerance type of personality. There is also a great understanding between Javed and Ramiz bhai.”

Wasim Khan is the latest to depart from the Pakistan cricket circle, following former coaches Misbah-Ul-Haq and Waqar Younis’s resignation. The Men in Green find themselves slightly unsettled by multiple off-field issues ahead of the T20 World Cup, where the team’s selections were also questioned.

Wasim Khan, who is British with Pakistani heritage, had made huge efforts to revive international cricket after a 2009 terror attack on the Sri Lankan team sent Pakistan into isolation for years. Hired on a three-year contract in 2019, he had organized Pakistan’s tours of England and New Zealand amid severe Covid-19 restrictions last year.

Pakistan has only hosted South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe since the 2009 attacks.

Danish Kaneria: BCCI’s Top Brass Won’t Tolerate Indiscipline From Virat Kohli

Danish Kaneria, the former Pakistan spinner shared his thoughts on Virat Kohli’s captaincy tenure coming under the scanner of late. Danish Kaneria expressed his views on his YouTube channel and responded to the rumors of senior players complaining about Virat Kohli’s behavior to the BCCI. Recent rumors have floated around about Virat Kohli’s boorish behavior towards the senior teammates, who have complained to the BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

Reports have suggested that the Indian skipper behaved rudely with Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Cheteshwar Pujara following the side’s loss in the World Test Championship final.

Danish Kaneria: Virat Kohli’s Captaincy Is In A Dilemma

Danish Kaneria opined that Virat Kohli’s leadership could be in danger as the BCCI’s top dignitaries demand discipline from every individual. He feels that if the reports have any truths attached to them, Sourav Ganguly will deal with it strongly to ensure such behavior isn’t encouraged in the future.

Danish Kaneria said: “Virat Kohli’s captaincy is in a dilemma because BCCI’s top bosses in Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah won’t tolerate indiscipline towards anybody. They won’t see if he is a big-ticket player and treat everyone the same way. Unlike Pakistan, where there are such concerns, I don’t think it happens in India because a top-notch cricketer is the BCCI president.”

Danish Kaneria added: “He (Ganguly) changed Indian cricket and he won’t see different players in different ways. Thus, I trust the BCCI to ensure that in future no player behaves roughly with their teammates.”

Despite rumors of a rift within the dressing room, the Indian team, under Virat Kohli, has delivered compelling performances on the pitch. Their recent outings in Tests against England justified why Virat Kohli is the right man to lead the side. Virat Kohli is India’s most successful captain to date, winning 38 out of 65 Tests he has led. Of those 38, six have come in Australia, England, and South Africa, four in the Caribbean, five in Sri Lanka, and 23 at home.

One of India’s most successful captains, Virat Kohli led India in 95 ODIs, and with 65 wins and 27 defeats. In 45 T20Is so far where he has been the captain, India has won 29 times while losing 14 times.

Danish Kaneria: Virat Kohli Needs To Follow The Culture Set By Predecessor Skipper MS Dhoni

Danish Kaneria opined that while aggression is a good trait to have, but it must be controlled while dealing with your countrymen teammates. The 40-year-old former spinner thinks Virat Kohli must take a leaf out of his predecessor MS Dhoni’s book ahead of the World Cup.

Kaneria added: “Virat Kohli’s aggression while captaining is a known thing, but misbehaving with your own players isn’t acceptable. He needs to follow the culture set by MS Dhoni. MS Dhoni dragged the players along with him despite win or loss by backing them. Hence, with the T20 World Cup looming and with Ravichandran Ashwin also part of the squad, Kohli must handle things carefully.”

MS Dhoni will join Team India as a mentor for the upcoming T20I World Cup. The retired cricketer is the first and only Indian captain to win the T20I trophy in the inaugural edition in 2007. Fans will hope the Men in Blue break their jinx this year and Virat Kohli ends his T20 captaincy reign with an ICC trophy.

Virat Kohli announced that he will step down as the captain of RCB after IPL 2021 concludes. Virat Kohli had also announced earlier that he will relinquish his India T20I captaincy after the upcoming T20I World Cup to be staged in the UAE and Oman, while MS Dhoni retired as the only captain to win all major ICC trophies (2011 ODI World Cup, 2007 T20 World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy).

Danish Kaneria Don’t Understand Why India Is Saving Out Of Form Ajinkya Rahane Who Should’ve Been Replaced

Danish Kaneria, the former Pakistan leg-spinner was baffled by India’s decision to demote Ajinkya Rahane to No.6. The Indian Test vice-captain hasn’t been in the best of form and has struggled to score consistently.

Danish Kaneria feels the Indian team management is trying to shield Ajinkya Rahane by sending Ravindra Jadeja to bat at No.5. He reckons someone like Suryakumar Yadav or Hanuma Vihari should have got the chance ahead of the out-of-form Ajinkya Rahane.

Danish Kaneria Don’t Understand Why India Is Saving Ajinkya Rahane

In a video on his YouTube channel, Danish Kaneria explained how the move to demote Ajinkya Rahane sends out the wrong message to the opposition. The Indian middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane has managed only one half-century in the series against England.

“I don’t understand why they are saving Ajinkya Rahane. If he isn’t able to perform in this innings then let the gates open for Suryakumar Yadav or Hanuma Vihari. Rahane is not in form and he doesn’t know where his off-stump is. If you know a player isn’t in form then you should have replaced him. A message goes to the opposition that you are saving the batsman,” Danish Kaneria stated.

Suryakumar Yadav and Hanuma Vihari are waiting in the wings and should get a chance according to Danish Kaneria. Although he is yet to play Tests, Suryakumar Yadav has a compelling record in first-class cricket, scoring 5326 runs in 77 first-class games at 44.01, with 14 tons.

Hanuma Vihari’s last innings for India was a heroic 161-ball 23 which helped India draw the Test match against Australia in Sydney. He made his Test debut for India in September 2018 and has featured in 12 Tests, 93 first-class games, 80 List A, and 74 T20 games.

Danish Kaneria Enjoyed The Way Rohit Sharma Batted

Rohit Sharma was the star man for India on Day 3 as he scored his maiden overseas Test hundred. Danish Kaneria was impressed with the application that the Indian opener showed in conditions that weren’t easy to bat on. Danish Kaneria believes India’s opening stand of 83 was crucial in them getting a good lead so far. He reckons India can post a huge target if they bat well on Day 4.

“I really enjoyed the way Rohit Sharma batted, the way he fought out in the first session. The elegance, class, focus and determination were there and India really needed such partnership from their openers. This is how you score in England and it was fantastic to see him bat,” Danish Kaneria concluded.

The first session will be crucial on Day 4 as India looks to push on and add to their lead, while England will look to trigger a batting collapse. Bad light stopped play at The Oval with India ahead by 171 runs. India ended the day at 270/3, with Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara scoring 127 and 61, respectively.

Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja will resume India’s innings on Day 4. Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara were dismissed in the same over by Ollie Robinson soon after the pair brought up their 150-run stand.

While Rohit Sharma fell to a pull shot on 127, Cheteshwar Pujara was caught in the slips for 61. Rohit Sharma hit a massive six-over long-on off Moeen Ali to get his first-ever Test century outside India. It also happened to be his 8th career century in the longest format. India concluded a brilliant Day 3 at 270-3 (lead of 171 runs) with Virat Kohli looking solid at 22 off 37 alongside Ravindra Jadeja and with three more capable batsmen yet to come.

Danish Kaneria: Time Has Come To Look Beyond Ajinkya Rahane

Danish Kaneria feels that the time has come for Indian cricket to look beyond Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane.

The Indian middle-order batter has managed only one half-century in the series against England. On Thursday, he registered yet another failure in the first innings of the Oval Test. Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for 14 off 47 deliveries, edging Craig Overton behind the wickets.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Danish Kaneria opined that Ajinkya Rahane has been given a long enough rope. He questioned why the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Hanuma Vihari were not getting a chance.

“India’s middle-order collapsed again. Ajinkya Rahane has been a total flop in this series. I think, now the time has come for India to really think about Ajinkya Rahane. Not only Rahane, India’s overall batting is in poor form,” said Danish Kaneria.

Danish Kaneria added: “I don’t know why Suryakumar Yadav and Hanuma Vihari are not being given a chance in the playing XI. Suryakumar Yadav and Prithvi Shaw were called up to the Indian team in England from Sri Lanka. Everyone has seen how Rahane is struggling. As for Suryakumar Yadav, he looks like some one who is capable of scoring runs in all conditions. He could have been given a chance according to me.”

Suryakumar Yadav was brought in as a late injury replacement along with Prithvi Shaw. The Mumbai Indians batsman has been in good form as of late but has never played the longest format for India, and the challenge only increases in complexity, given the conditions in England.

Suryakumar Yadav or Hanuma Vihari are waiting in the wings and should get a chance according to Danish Kaneria. Although he is yet to play Tests, Suryakumar Yadav has a compelling record in first-class cricket, scoring 5326 runs in 77 first-class games at 44.01, with 14 tons.

Following a long wait, Suryakumar Yadav has made an excellent start to his international career. He was the Player of the Series in the ODIs against Sri Lanka and scored a half-century in India’s win in the first T20I as well. In his brief international career, the 30-year-old middle-order batsman has played 3 ODIs where he amassed 124 runs averaging 62 and 4 T20Is where he amassed 139 runs averaging 46.33.

Ajay Jadeja Thinking What Ajinkya Rahane Is Going Through

Meanwhile, in an interesting move, Ravindra Jadeja was sent to bat ahead of Ajinkya Rahane on Day 1 of the Oval Test. While there were mixed reactions to the move, according to Ajay Jadeja, it could be an indication that team management is beginning to lose faith in Ajinkya Rahane.

The former Indian cricketer said on the Sony Sports Network: “I am just thinking what Ajinkya Rahane is going through. One of your best batsmen, vice-captain of the side. Even before he has walked in, it’s like Rahane has almost got a signal, saying ‘we’re not too sure about you.'”

Ajay Jadeja added: “It could be the left-hander combination but I am just thinking in terms of someone who is uncertain with not a lot of runs. Before you walk in, you have got Ravindra walking ahead of you and there will be some time, whenever he walks in he is going to be thinking about it.”

Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed for 10 off 34 as India crumbled to 191 all out on Thursday. Shardul Thakur top-scored for India with 57 off 36 balls.

Even This India B Team Touring Sri Lanka Can Certainly Beat Pakistan, Says Danish Kaneria

Danish Kaneria, a former Pakistan leg-spinner feels the Indian team that is touring Sri Lanka (to which he referred to as India’s B team) has been performing exceedingly well. He has been impressed with the way Rahul Dravid has infused confidence in chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

Team India dominated Sri Lanka in the first ODI and sealed the series with a thrilling win in the second game. Danish Kaneria feels the way this Indian team is playing, they also have the capability to beat a full-strength Pakistan side if the two play against each other which isn’t happening nowadays due to political tensions across the borders.

Danish Kaneria: Even This India B Team Can Certainly Beat Pakistan

Half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and Shikhar Dhawan helped India register a comfortable 7-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first ODI. Stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan led from the front with an unbeaten knock of 86 and he was well supported by Prithvi Shaw (43) and Ishan Kishan (59) as India chased down the 263-run target comfortably at the R Premadasa stadium.

Earlier, after winning the toss and electing to bat Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 262 for nine from their allotted 50 overs. With the ball, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, and Deepak Chahar all picked up two wickets apiece. Prithvi Shaw, for his explosive cameo, was adjudged player of the match.

“The way this Indian team is performing, the way Rahul Dravid has worked with the Indian team he deserves all the praise. The way he has motivated Kuldeep Yadav, even this India B team can certainly beat Pakistan,” Danish Kaneria said on his YouTube Channel.

After impressing in the first ODI with two wickets, Kuldeep Yadav went wicketless while giving away 55 runs in the 2nd ODI. Likely to get another chance in the third ODI, Kuldeep Yadav needs more wickets if he is to keep his confidence high. Yuzvendra Chahal followed his impressive figures of 2/52 in the 1st ODI with even better figures of 3/50 off 10 overs in the 2nd ODI.

Danish Kaneria: Playing IPL 2021 In UAE Will Keep Indian Team In Good Stead

The three-match T20I series against hosts Sri Lanka will be the last piece of international cricket for India before the all-important upcoming T20 World Cup in October-November. While many may believe the lack of international games may hurt India, most of the players will be playing the second phase of the IPL 2021 season in the UAE just before the showpiece event.

Danish Kaneria feels the Indian players will get accustomed to the pitches in UAE and playing in these conditions will definitely give them the required practice before such a big tournament. The former Pakistan spinner has tipped India and West Indies to make it to the final of the T20 World Cup. Both teams are doing well on sluggish pitches and this could certainly be the case in the UAE.

“India are not playing any limited over cricket before the T20 World Cup but playing IPL will keep them in good stead. I think it will be India vs West Indies in the final,” Danish Kaneria concluded.

In the 2nd ODI, Deepak Chahar’s unbeaten 69 saw India recover from 193 for 7 to chase down 276 in Colombo. Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (19 not out) featured in an unbeaten 84-run stand for the eighth wicket to rescue India after a batting collapse. The third ODI of the India-Sri Lanka series will be played in Colombo on Friday, July 23.

Pakistan’s Batsmen Should Learn From Deepak Chahar After His 69* Gives India Victory: Danish Kaneria

Danish Kaneria, a former Pakistan spinner has praised tailender pacer Deepak Chahar for his brilliant innings in the second ODI against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. Deepak Chahar’s unbeaten 69 saw India recover from 193 for 7 to chase down 276 in Colombo.

Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (19 not out) featured in an unbeaten 84-run stand for the eighth wicket to rescue India after a batting collapse.

Danish Kaneria: Pakistan’s Batsmen Should Learn From Deepak Chahar

On his YouTube channel, former spinner Danish Kaneria lauded Deepak Chahar’s knock and urged Pakistan’s batsmen to learn from him.

“Full credit to Deepak Chahar. Pakistan’s batsmen should learn from him. Deepak Chahar took the game till the very end. He stood at the wicket, rotated the strike smartly and picked up a the odd boundary here and there. Chahar had that key partnership with Bhuvneshwar Kumar at the end. Although Kumar only scored 19, it was as good as a 50 on the day,” Danish Kaneria said.

Danish Kaneria pointed out that Deepak Chahar took inspiration from former Indian skipper MS Dhoni’s philosophy of taking the game till the end. Incidentally, MS Dhoni is Deepak Chahar’s captain at Chennai Super Kings.

The former Pakistan cricketer added: “Thanks to Chahar and Kumar, India won the series and now we could see some changes in the final ODI. But today (Tuesday) was Chahar’s day. He first claimed two wickets and then batted very sensibly. He did not play any unnecessary shots and applied MS Dhoni’s philosophy of taking the game till the end if wickets fall. It was an outstanding performance by India.”

CSK failed to make it to the playoffs for the first time in the history of the tournament in IPL 2020. Chennai Super Kings though performed brilliantly in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. The MS Dhoni-led side finished second on the points table with 5 wins from 7 seven games before the tournament came to an abrupt halt.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar: It Was Rahul Drabvid’s Call To Send Deepak Chahar Earlier Which Was Proved Right

Following India’s impressive win, Bhuvneshwar Kumar revealed that it was the team management’s decision to send Deepak Chahar to bat ahead of him in the second ODI. The vice-captain of the side explained that coach Rahul Dravid was aware of pacer Deepak Chahar’s skills with the willow having seen him bat on India ‘A’ tours.

After having a forgettable outing in the first ODI – where he conceded 63 runs in 9 overs – Bhuvneshwar Kumar improved his figures to 3/54 in the second ODI. Deepak Chahar apart from his 69* picked a couple of wickets.

At a post-match press conference, Kumar explained: “Look, he’s played with our coach Rahul Dravid before for India ‘A’ and some other series’ and he scored there as well. So, he (Dravid) knew he (Chahar) could bat and he can hit a few balls. So that was his call and the way he batted proved him right. We all know he can bat, he has done it many times. It wasn’t a tough call but it’s just good to see the way he scored runs.”

Danish Kaneria Picks West Indies, England, India As 2021 T20I World Cup Final Contenders

Danish Kaneria, former Pakistan leg-spinner has opened up on which teams participating in the 2021 T20I WC could make it to the final of the upcoming T20 World Cup. Groups for the showpiece event were drawn on Friday and there are some interesting match-ups to watch out for.

Group A can be considered the ‘Group of Death’ with the likes of West Indies, Australia, England, and South Africa in it. However, Danish Kaneria believes the way West Indies have thumped Australia 4-1 in the T20I series, they will be one of the favorites to make it to the final.

Danish Kaneria: India Favourites To Make It To The 2021 T20 World Cup Final

Speaking to India News, Danish Kaneria also backed England to give defending champions 2016 T20I World Cup winner West Indies strong competition and make it to the final. Group B consists of India, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Afghanistan so far. Danish Kaneria had no hesitation in stating that India is overwhelming favorites from this group to make it to the final.

“If I look at Group 1, the way West Indies have formed their team and the way they are playing against Australia, they are strong contenders. Between West Indies and England I think one team will make it to the final.

“In Group 2, India have quality cricketers and all-rounders. IPL 2021 phase two will happen before the T20 World Cup so it will favour India make it to the final because the players will be in touch,” Danish Kaneria stated.

Evin Lewis’ sparkling display with the bat (79 off 34 balls) and scintillating fielding give West Indies a 4-1 margin over Australia with a 16 run win in the 5th T20I. West Indies won the 1st T20I by 18 runs with Andre Russell scoring 51 runs and Obed McCoy taking 4 scalps.

West Indies won the 2nd T20I by 56 runs with Shimron Hetmyer(61) and Hayden Walsh(3/29) contributing. West Indies successfully chased 142 in the 3rd with Chris Gayle scoring 67. Lendl Simmons’ 72 went in vain as Australia won the 4th with only 4 runs. Mitchell Marsh amassed maximum- 219 runs besides taking 8 scalps while Hayden Walsh picked 12 wickets.

Danish Kaneria: From The Commercial Point Of View India And Pakistan Match Would Generate A Lot Of Revenue

India and Pakistan have once again been drawn in the same group for the T20 World Cup and Danish Kaneria feels it is an exciting moment for fans from both countries. As India and Pakistan don’t play bilateral cricket against each other, their encounters in ICC events are always highly anticipated. Danish Kaneria feels the match will also help the ICC financially as viewership increases in India-Pakistan games and it makes a difference in the revenue generated.

“India-Pakistan games and viewed more than the Ashes. India and Pakistan are not playing bilateral series. So people wait with anticipation for the times when these two teams meet in ICC events. From the commercial point of view this would also generate a lot of revenue,” Danish Kaneria signed off.

India and Pakistan have not played the Test series for more than 14 years. As far as bilateral series in ODIs and T20Is are concerned, it has been over eight years. While they face off each other during ICC events and Asia Cup. The political tension between the two neighbouring countries flared up after the terror attack in Mumbai’s Taj Hotel.

Pakistan and India’s last bilateral ties at either of the two neighbouring countries were 2 T20Is and 3 ODIs in India way back in 2012.

Arjuna Ranatunga Made An Unnecessary Statement To Remain In Limelight: Danish Kaneria

Arjuna Ranatunga, former Sri Lanka captain had made a loose comment over the touring Indian team recently, which was not received very well by the India former players. He had called the relatively young and less experienced team lead by Shikhar Dhawan a ‘second string’ side.

In fact, Sri Lanka Cricket Board had to intervene as well and clarified that ‘India is not a second-string side’. Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria too has lambasted Arjuna Ranatunga for his comments and said that it wasn’t expected from him.

Arjuna Ranatunga Made The Statement Regarding 2nd String Indian Team Being Sent To Remain In Limelight: Danish Kaneria

Many former cricketers have slammed Arjuna Ranatunga and given him a reality check that despite a second-stringed Indian team in the island nation at present, for 3 ODIs and as many T20Is, they are still favourites and a daunting force versus Kusal Perera-led Lanka, who ended their England tour winless recently.

“First of all, Mr. Ranatunga. You have made this statement to remain in limelight. Because only India is a team right now that has a pool of 50-60 players, strong enough to field two different sides.

“And even in this team, players such as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Hardik Pandya keep representing India consistently,” Danish Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.

Danish Kaneria (Getty Images)
Danish Kaneria (Getty Images)

“So I just want to say that I feel sorry to hear this coming from you. You’re such a big name and yet, you made such a statement and then fell flat on your face with Sri Lanka Cricket responding to you.”

Arjuna Ranatunga’s comments make less sense at a time when the Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) is in desperate need of funds whereas the national side is in a state of turmoil, being thrashed left, right and centre across formats.

Sri Lanka just ended their limited-overs tour of England, where they were whitewashed by Eoin Morgan in three T20Is and lost the three ODIs 2-0. Incessant rain saved them in the final encounter after Lankans folded for 166.

Danish Kaneria: Such A Statement Wasn’t Needed

Danish Kaneria went on to say that the SLC should be thankful to the BCCI that they even sent a team to Sri Lanka, as the latter is going to a lean patch as far as their on-field performance is concerned.

“Sri Lanka cricket is on a decline. It’s almost as of they’ve forgotten how to play cricket. You should be happy that India is sending its team to lift you out of a financial crisis. The board will get sponsors, funds, and whatnot,” Kaneria pointed out.

Sri Lanka

“Don’t think such a statement was needed. These things only create friction between boards. I think Ranatunga must have learned his lesson or when India would hammer Sri Lanka comprehensively, then he’ll understand.”

The upcoming India tour of Sri Lanka, starting from July 13, may comprise India’s second-stringed side consisting of as many as 6 new faces but they still have enough firepower, experience and a good mix of promising youth to challenge and dominate a struggling Sri Lankan side. Hence, the India home series is still more of a challenge for lowly-ranked Sri Lanka, rather than India.

India begins their Lanka tour with a three-match ODI series, followed by three T20Is. All the games will be held at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.

Danish Kaneria Picks Ravindra Jadeja As Most Valuable Player In WTC Final

Danish Kaneria predicted India’s top performer in the much-awaited WTC summit clash. India and New Zealand are set to lock horns in the WTC final in Southampton on June 18.

Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah remain the most important performers for Team India across formats. While India had many performers in the recent past, especially in the longest format of the game, it is tough to predict who will be that one stand-out player for the Indian team when they lock horns with New Zealand in the much-awaited ICC World Test Championship final (WTC).

Danish Kaneria: Ravindra Jadeja Will Give Key Wickets In Regular Intervals And Score Runs Lower Down The Order Besides Fielding So He Is Going To Be The MVP

India and New Zealand are set to lock horns in the summit clash of the inaugural WTC at The Rose Bowl, Southampton from June 18-22. Ahead of the marquee encounter, several former cricketers, experts, and pundits of the game have come forward and made glaring predictions with regard to the finale.

Pakistan’s tainted former spinner Danish Kaneria, too, joined the bandwagon and predicted India’s top performer in the WTC final. To pick one from the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Virat Kohli is surely tough, but Danish Kaneria named all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

“Because I think that bowlers play a very important role, irrespective of what format you’re playing. If they’re taking wickets, they’ll win the match. If we talk about Ravindra Jadeja, he is a triple-dimensional player. He is such a player that you just can’t keep him out, he simply has to play,” Danish Kaneria was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.

“He will give you key wickets in key intervals. He will give your runs lower down the order, stitch partnerships, and will even affect a couple of brilliant run-outs while fielding. So, he is going to be the most valuable player in the final,” said Danish Kaneria.

Ravindra Jadeja has been India’s go-to man across formats since 2016-17. The 32-year-old’s numbers speak for themselves, in whites, since 2017.

Ravindra Jadeja Missed England Test Series After Injuring Himself In Preceding Australian Tour

Ravindra Jadeja made a sensational return to professional cricket after recovering from his thumb injury which he incurred during the third Test in Australia and came up with some sensational batting, bowling, and fielding efforts in the now-postponed IPL 2021.

He scored 131 runs at a strike rate of 161.72 and an average of 131. He picked 6 wickets in 7 matches at a bowling average of 26.83 and grabbed 8 catches for the 3-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who was placed second on the points table at the time of suspension after 29 league matches.

Ravindra Jadeja could not play against England in the home Test series due to a fractured thumb but is gearing up to play against the Three Lions in a 5-Test series following the clash against the Kiwis. Ravindra Jadeja had a batting average of 85 and a bowling average of 15 which is remarkable in the India vs Australia Test series playing 2 Tests.

Thus, it will be interesting to see if Ravindra Jadeja retains his form in the gruelling English conditions and guides India to the coveted WTC title. Virat Kohli-led India has already arrived in the United Kingdom for the WTC final, later this month, whereas they will also stay in England and Wales for a long period post the summit clash. India will then lock horns with Joe Root-led England for five Tests in the English summer, from August-September.

Danish Kaneria Prefers Sanju Samson As Skipper For Sri Lanka Tour

Danish Kaneria is most inclined towards Sanju Samson as his pick as skipper for the Sri Lanka limited-overs tour. However, given Sanju Samson’s failed attempts to cement a permanent place in the Indian team, the board may look beyond the wicketkeeper-batsman, but Danish Kaneria has put his faith behind the keeper believing he should be given more opportunities, which may clear the path for him in the time to come. Having said that, the former spinner feels the captaincy duties are likely to be assigned to Shikhar Dhawan.

Danish Kaneria Prefers Sanju Samson As Skipper For Sri Lanka Tour But Feels Shikhar Dhawan Too Is A Strong Contender

With the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin, Rishabh Pant, and others in England for the Test series, the squad that will travel to Sri Lanka will be filled with fringe players and promising youngsters, which adds to the debate of captaincy. The BCCI is yet to announce India’s squad for the tour of Sri Lanka, but already the big question doing the rounds is who is the likely candidate to lead the team in the absence of major players.

Shikhar Dhawan, based on his experience is being talked about as the man to lead India in Sri Lanka, but former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria feels the command of the team should be given to someone who can be groomed as a future captain for India.

“The Sri Lanka tour is a great opportunity for India to possibly find its next captain and groom him. The choices aren’t a lot. In fact, there are only two options. One is Sanju Samson, who has captained Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and looked good behind the stumps as well. The second option is the most senior player, Shikhar Dhawan. He is a senior player in ODIs and T20Is,” Danish Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.

“However, is he a long-term option to lead India in the future? Or Samson has the time and opportunity to improve himself going ahead? Or will Hardik Pandya be captaincy material? All these are tough questions. But as far as I am concerned, I will go with a player who, in the future, can lead India,” said Danish Kaneria.

Sanju Samson led Rajasthan Royals in the now-suspended IPL 2021. The Kerala batsman took over the reins from Australian Steve Smith, who was purchased by Delhi Capitals at the IPL 2021 Auction. Sanju Samson was growing into the role well in the tournament before it was deferred due to the Covid-19 crisis in the country.

Sanju Samson topped the run-scorers chart for the franchise, as he smashed a century and amassed 277 runs in 7 matches. Rajasthan Royals, under Sanju Samson’s captaincy debut, won three of their first seven matches and stood fifth in the points table.

Danish Kaneria: Shikhar Dhawan Likely To Get India’s Captaincy In Sri Lanka

In the absence of many key players, Shikhar Dhawan may lead the Indian team in 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is against Sri Lanka. Although there has been no announcement regarding the same, it is expected that the players who performed well in the IPL could get a chance in the team.

“Shikhar Dhawan is likely to get India’s captaincy in Sri Lanka. Not Shaw, Samson… but Dhawan. But if it were up to me, I would have to go with Samson. We should be ready, that in the future, if Virat is willing to step down as captain, then he should be the next in line. We have to be ready that if Kohli isn’t around, we need to groom someone. So I would go with Samson but Dhawan remains a strong contender,” the former leg-spinner added.

Shikhar Dhawan, the probable captain had a good IPL 2021 with Delhi Capitals. He was the highest scorer of the tournament with 380 runs at an average of 54.28. He would be accompanied by fellow teammate Delhi Capitals opener Prithvi Shaw at the top of the order. Devdutt Padikkal is likely to be one of the three openers India will travel with besides the duo of Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan.

In 2019, Shikhar Dhawan scored over 520 runs and then followed it up with 618 runs in IPL 2020, where he also became the first batsman in the tournament’s history to score two successive hundreds
