Chennai Super Kings (CSK) innings

CSK openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis provided a strong start with the 46 runs partnership. However, in the sixth over of that innings, Chris Morris broke that partnership as Du Plessis lost his wicket after scoring 25 runs off 13 balls (2 fours and 2 sixes).

But the momentum was maintained by Gaikwad and Ambati Rayudu as they set up the strong second-wicket partnership. They built up the 67 runs partnership for the second wicket. In the 14th over, Yuzvendra Chahal bowled Rayudu for 39 runs off 27 balls (3 fours and 2 sixes), but RCB didn’t manage to create any further pressure in that successful chase for CSK. In that same over of Rayudu’s dismissal, Gaikwad completed his maiden IPL fifty in 42 balls.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) innings

After the 31-run opening partnership, RCB opener Aaron Finch (15) was dismissed by Sam Curran in the 4th over. On the first ball after the completion of the mandatory powerplay, Mitchell Santner dismissed another RCB opener Devdutt Padikkal (22), majorly thanks to Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad brilliant fielding partnership at the boundary side.

Captain Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers then built up the solid partnership for the third wicket. They managed to put the 82 runs partnership for that third wicket. During that partnership, Kohli also completed his 200 IPL sixes. Finally, the pacer Deepak Chahar broke that partnership in the 18th over after taking the wicket of De Villiers, who scored 39 runs off 36 balls (4 fours).

Kohli said, “We will bat first. It’s pretty dry, rough. It’s interesting when the weather was hot the pitches weren’t playing well. The temperatures have dropped now but it’s slowing down. Moeen Ali replaces Isuru Udana as a spinner all-rounder, just one change. This green gesture is special for RCB, have quite a few good memories in this jersey.”

On the other hand, Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni also revealed that they made two alterations in the playing XI as Mitchell Santner and Monu Kumar replaced Shardul Thakur and Josh Hazlewood.

Dhoni said, “We would have loved to bat first as well, same reason, it’s a used wicket. Mathematically we still have a chance, but you have to think how we have done in this season. 4-5 games prior we just took one game at a time and not worry about the points table. If we win it will take care of itself. We are looking at faces who haven’t got chances. Santner, Monu come in for Josh and Shardul.”
