Who Else Is Going To Coach Or Captain This England Test Team Any Better? -Kevin Pietersen

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has hit back to the critics who want to sack Joe Root and Chris Silverwood from their respective positions as captain and coach after the Ashes debacle. Pietersen feels that England has no other option but to go with the same set-up.

On Sunday, chasing the target of 271, England collapsed once again to get bowled out for 124 as they conceded the series by 0-4 in the 5-match series. The Sydney match was ended in a draw as the last wicket pair- Stuart Broad and James Anderson deny the last wicket to the hosts to avoid the possibility of another whitewash.

England hasn’t won a Test match in Australia since Jan 2011

As the series ended, the review and scrutiny have been started over England’s performance as the former players and cricket pundits have been asking to sack the captain and the coach. However, Kevin Pietersen doesn’t agree with them.

“They’re saying, SACK THE COACH! SACK THE CAPTAIN! Who else is going to coach or captain this England Test team any better? If you name me some world-class players to replace the current underperforming ones, I’ll agree. But, there isn’t! #BlameTheSystem” Kevin Pietersen tweeted.

England has struggled down under for a while now as they haven’t won a Test match in Australia since January 2011. The scoreline in the last three Ashes series in Australia has been strongly in favour of the hosts as they won by 5-0 in 2013-14, 4-0 in 2017-18, and 4-0 in 2021-22.

Kevin Pietersen himself was part of 2013-14 when the hosts thrashed them by 5-0. It was his last series in his international career. Pietersen believes that Joe Root and Chris Silverwood are still the right men for the job as they don’t have any better alternatives.

England had a torrid time in Test cricket last year as they lost their both home series against New Zealand and India. They also lost the 4-match series by 1-3 in India earlier in the year 2021.

However, Joe Root had a great time with the bat as he scored 1708 runs with an average of 61 which included 6 hundreds. Though he couldn’t play any influential knock in the Ashes.

England’s next assignment in Tests will be a 3-match series against West Indies in March.

Ben Stokes Likely To Opt Out Of IPL Mega Auction

England‘s premier all-rounder Ben Stokes is likely to opt-out from this year’s IPL Mega auction to manage his workload for the home summer. According to a report in London’s Evening Standard, Stokes will take a break between the West Indies tour and home season to stay fresh for the long home season.

Ben Stokes was previously part of Rajasthan Royals in IPL but he missed most part of last season due to a finger injury. The all-rounder was at the center of criticism after the Ashes debacle.

“Stokes will sit out this year’s tournament, which will feature 10 teams for the first time and be preceded by a mega-auction in which there are plenty of spaces to fill,” London’s Evening Standard reported.

Notable that Stokes had an underwhelming Ashes down under as the all-rounder scored just 236 runs in 10 innings with an average of 23.6 which included 2 fifties. Also, he could pick only 4 wickets with an average of 71.50.

“Stokes has had a tumultuous time over the last couple of years, with the death of his father Ged 13 months ago preceding a long break in 2021 to prioritise his mental health and fix a finger badly broken at the IPL,” the report added.

Ben Stokes played 31 matches for Rajasthan Royals

Stokes missed most part of last home season as he took a break to focus on mental health and recover from a finger injury. England had a torrid time in Test cricket at home last season as they lost the 2-Test match series by 0-1 and are also trailing by 1-2 against India in a 5-match.

“Sitting out represents a significant financial sacrifice but should also allow him some time off to mentally refresh between England’s tour of the Caribbean in March and the international summer in June,” it stated.

Ben Stokes was picked by Rajasthan Royals in the 2018 auction and since then they retained him for 4 years. The all-rounder played 31 matches for them in 4 years.

It will be interesting to see if other English players make themselves available for the mega auction. Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali have already been retained by Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.

If Ever A Team Was Shaped In The Mould Of Their Captain, It Is Virat Kohli’s India Side – Alastair Cook

Former England captain Alastair Cook has lauded Virat Kohli’s captaincy tenure as he opined that Kohli has had a huge influence on the Indian team to make them the top test team of the world.

One day after India’s Test series got over against South Africa, Virat Kohli left everyone in disbelief as he decided to step down from Test captaincy. In his tenure which last more than 7 years, Virat Kohli captained India in 68 test matches as India won 40 of those matches and lost 17 while 11 matches ended in a draw.

“It has been 7 years of hard work, toil, and relentless perseverance every day to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there.

“Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it is now. There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey: but never had there been a lack of effort or a lack of belief,” Kohli released a statement on Twitter.

Alastair Cook agreed with Virat’s statement that the job needs lots of patience and hard work. Writing in his column for The Times, Alastair Cook applauded Kohli’s efforts as captain as he believes that his energy and enthusiasm rubbed to the whole team. Kohli took India to no.1 position in ICC ranking.

Virat Kohli captained India in 68 Test matches

“Kohli, 33, was right: being a Test captain does demand hard work and perseverance; and, yes, he has taken his team in the right direction. India may have lost the World Test Championship final in June but they are ranked No. 1 and so much of that is down to the hard edge he instilled. If ever a team was shaped in the mould of their captain, it is this India side,” Cook wrote.

Coincidentally Cook’s last assignment as England test captain was against India led by Virat Kohli when England faced a 0-4 thrashing in India in 2016. Last year again India beat England by 3-1 at home and in the same year they travelled to England in which India is currently leading by 2-1 as the remaining one test will be played this year in July.

Mark Butcher

Mark Butcher Questions Chris Silverwood’s Dual Role As A Coach And Selector

Former England opener Mark Butcher has called out for wholesale changes in England’s test team after the Ashes debacle. Butcher believes that changes should start from the positions of captain and coach.

On Sunday, Australia beat the visitors by 146 runs to win the series by 4-0. And their wait for this first test win in Australia since January 2011 has been going longer and longer. The series has been quite a struggle for England as they failed to compete in all three departments. Had the last pair of Stuart Broad and James Ander not survived 2 overs in Sydney, it would have been another whitewash.

Nasser Hussain said England were lacking "a bit more toughness in that middle order" and Mark Butcher stated that they "let India back in" to the game ( Image: Sky Sports)

“Joe Root will probably stay on as captain”- Mark Butcher

Butcher demands some big changes in leadership for England. Though he agrees that Root might continue as England test captain as there ain’t too many alternatives for that role.

“I think Joe Root will probably stay on as captain – more because there isn’t anybody obvious to take over from him,” Butcher spoke to BT Sport.

But he demanded Chris Silverwood to step down from his role. He also slammed ECB to offer him multiple roles as selector and coach.

“So you then look above that, and who’s decision was it to make Chris Silverwood not only the head coach but also give him the responsibility of being a selector? I said it at the time – it was an absolutely ludicrous decision to have a guy in the dressing room, who not only is responsible for results and preparing the team for games, but he’s also the guy who can hire and fire you,” he added.

Can you go up to the coach of the team and have a chat with him about struggling with your form knowing that he’s responsible for your selection? You can’t have that guy do two jobs and be in the dressing room at the same time,” he added further.

He warned that England might have to face similar thrashing in West Indies as they are set to travel West Indies for the 3-match series in March.

“When it comes to preparing for the tour of the West Indies – it’s a notoriously difficult place to prepare as a team because it doesn’t matter how long you’re out there, Practise facilities aren’t up to much and you don’t know what you’re going to have in terms of warm-up games,” he stated.

Before the test series, England will play 5-match T20I series against West Indies but none of the members from the Ashes squad will be part of the series as the series will start on January 23.

Alastair Cook Weighs In On Joe Root’s Future As England’s Test Captain

Former England captain Alastair Cook has expressed his opinion regarding Joe Root’s future as captain as he said that Root should give himself some time to think before making any decision either way. Cook also opined that England paid a price for not paying much attention to test cricket in past few years.

On Sunday, the visitors suffered another batting collapse as they bowled out for 124, chasing the target of 271. So Australia retained the Ashes as they took the series by 4-0.

“Only Joe Root will know if he wants to continue as captain or not, and I respect his decision either way” – Cook

Writing a column for The Times, Cook expressed various thoughts on England’s Ashes campaign. Notable that Joe Root made it quite clear that he would want to continue as captain but Cook believes that those conversations don’t make much significance in the middle of the series.

“In press conferences since the defeat in Melbourne, Joe has said he wants to carry on. But that’s what you have to say while there are still two Tests to play.

“It may well be when he gets home, away from the heat of the international arena, and considers the reset that English red-ball cricket clearly needs, that he decides he too isn’t the right man to usher in a new era. Only Joe will know, and I respect his decision either way,” Cook wrote.

Though Cook isn’t surprised with all the hullabaloo as he said that it’s a normal thing for Australia or England- whoever ends up on the losing side.

File image of Alastair Cook. Reuters

“Whenever one of the two countries suffers a heavy Ashes defeat, a review inevitably follows – it happened with England in 2007 and 2014 and Australia in 2011,” he stated.

Also, Cook pointed out that Ashes defeat wasn’t a one-off for England as they had a tough year as a test team. England lost their both home series against New Zealand and India. They also lost an away series against India.

“2021 was the year that the neglect of red-ball cricket caught up with England. We got away with it in recent years because we usually won in English conditions and occasionally enjoyed a morale-boosting series victory overseas to paper over the cracks. In 2021, the cracks burst through the paper.

“Take out the series win against a weak Sri Lanka, and you are looking at two wins and nine defeats from 13 (and the two draws could have been losses but for the intervention of rain),” he concluded.

“Losing To A Better Team Is Acceptable But Supporters Can’t Accept When You Throw The Towel In”- Michael Vaughan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has slammed England’s performance in the Ashes as the visitors collapsed once again in the 4th innings at Hobart as the hosts wrapped up the series by 4-0.

Chasing the target of 271, England openers put on a partnership of 68 runs but the rest of the batters failed to capitalize on that as they lost 10 wickets in space of 56 runs.

“England make too many excuses”- Michael Vaughan

Speaking to Fox Sports, the Ashes 2005 winning captain Michael Vaughan was quite furious with the lack of fight shown by the visitors.

“People can accept losing when you’re playing a better team, and Australia’s a better team, but supporters can’t accept when you throw the towel in, Supporters and people in the game won’t accept when there’s no heart and fight. We saw it in Sydney and I thought Sydney was almost that turning point moment where people accepted it and said, wait a minute, it’s not been easy for the England side but they’ve still shown a huge amount of character, but a few days later in Hobart, they’ve thrown the towel in and that’s something only the players can answer to of why that happened,” Michael Vaughan said.

Vaughan also hit out to the criticism of loopholes in county cricket as he feels that these are just excuses as there can’t be any excuse for not making a single 300+ score in the 5-match series.

"Losing To A Better Team Is Acceptable But Supporters Can’t Accept When You Throw The Towel In"- Michael Vaughan 1

“I just think we’re in an era where we make too many excuses for too many people. When you see a team that loses its heart and fight there’s a problem. Now it’s easy to say the problem is the system in the UK, and that’s absolutely right to point out a few changes, but the problem is also inwardly with the players who are playing and they lost the fight and where did they lose that fight?” Vaughan added.

England hasn’t won a test match in Australia since January 2011. Though Vaughan said that there is no doubt that previous era England teams used to face similar results but they used to put up more fight than this current England side. In the 2013-14 tour, England was whitewashed by 0-5, similarly, in the 2017-18 tour, they were beaten by 0-4.

“I used to watch the Ashes in the 90s, yes England were losing but they were competing. The last tours we’ve lost 5-0, 4-0, but I always thought for a couple of days England competed and showed a bit of fight. Whereas on this tour it’s been so predictable that you watch and as soon as the ball does anything you just felt they were going to get blown away,” he added.

England’s next assignment in tests will 3-match series in West Indies in March-April.

Ramiz Raja Proposes An Annual Four-Nation Super Series Involving Pakistan, India, Australia And England

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja has proposed the idea of an annual quadrangular series to be played involving 4 countries- Pakistan, India, Australia, and England. The tournament would be played in the T20 format as each nation would get the opportunity to host the series on a rotation basis.

On Tuesday Ramiz Raja shared this information on Twitter that he would propose this idea to the next ICC meeting.

“Hello fans. Will propose to the ICC a Four Nations T20i Super Series involving Pak Ind Aus Eng to be played every year, to be hosted on a rotation basis by these four. A separate revenue model with profits to be shared on a percentage basis with all ICC members, think we have a winner,” Ramiz Raja tweeted.

Notable that Ramiz Raja is trying hard to revive cricket in Pakistan as he is now eying for the India-Pakistan series. India and Pakistan haven’t faced each other in bilateral series since 2012-13 when Pakistan toured India for a series of 3 ODIs and 2 T20Is. Pakistan won the ODI series by a 2-1 margin while the T20I series was drawn by 1-1.

“A separate revenue model with profits to be shared on a percentage basis with all ICC members”- Ramiz Raja

Since then, the two teams have faced each other in only multination tournaments like World Cup, Champions Trophy, and Asia Cup. Neither Pakistan players get chances to play in the Indian Premier League.

Meanwhile, Raja arranged a quite packed schedule for Pakistan as they will host lots of cricket in Pakistan. In March-April they will host a full-fledged series against Australia as they will play a series of 3 Tests, 3 ODIs, and one-off T20I. England and New Zealand are also scheduled to visit the country in the next 18 months.

West Indies visited Pakistan last month to play a limited-overs series however the tour was cut short as there was a covid outbreak in the West Indies camp. Pakistan clean swept the T20I series by 3-0 but the ODI series has been postponed to April 2021.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) will begin on January 27 and the final is scheduled to play on February 27. All games will be played in two venues- Karachi and Lahore.

I Think Joe Root Is The Man To Captain The Side – Shane Warne

The legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne still believes that Joe Root should continue as England test captain. Noteworthy that the pressure has been surrounding Joe Root since England again failed to win a Test match in the ongoing Ashes.

Australia regained the Ashes with an innings win at Melbourne though England put up some fight in the 4th test as they managed to draw the match to avoid the possibility of a whitewash. This is Joe Root’s second Ashes series in Australia as a captain but he failed to win a single test out of 9 matches. Overall he led England in 60 test matches with 27 wins and 24 losses.

Root hasn’t won a Test as captain in Australia

Since England couldn’t get the Ashes back even in the home series under his captaincy, there are talks if it’s the right time to hand over Ben Stokes the captaincy. However, Shane Warne still backs Root to do the job as he believes in his prime batting but Warne insisted that he would need some help from the team management.

“I think Joe Root is the man to captain the side. I think he should remain as captain. What he needs, though, is not sports science people or data. He can have those people in the background. But what he needs around him is hard, Test match players, who have been there and know the game of cricket,” Shane Warne spoke to TalkSport.

Joe Root also hadn’t played an impactful knock in Australia as he is yet to score a test century in 13 Tests he played down under.

“They can help him with tactics and strategy. If you surround him with a few of those people, you’ll see the best of Root. You would have to say there’s not enough good cricket knowledge people around him,” he added.

Warne further pointed out that England didn’t play to their potential as they tactically lagged behind. He stated that England missed out on the trick by not playing Stuart Broad in the Ashes opener at Brisbane. Broad is the only England bowler to take a fifer in this Ashes as he picked 5/101 in the Sydney Test. He also pointed out that David Warner had struggled against Broad and having him could have set things differently for England.

England will be disappointed with the way they’ve played. They could’ve played a lot better. But I think Australia have been absolutely outstanding as well. I just think England have got a lot of the basics wrong.

“How does Stuart Broad not play that first Test? When you think of the 2019 Ashes series and what Broad did to David Warner, he owned him. When they announced Broad wasn’t playing, how do you think Warner felt? The selections have just been horrific, really. They haven’t got any of them right,” Warne said.

The fifth and final test of the Ashes will be played from January 14 at Hobart.

Ramiz Raja To Propose Annual Quadrangular Series Involving India, Australia And England

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ramiz Raja is all set to propose an annual quadrangular series to revive India-Pakistan cricket. The other two teams who are likely to join the contest will be Australia and England.

According to a report in Code Sports Australia, the four-nation tournament will be played in T20 format which will be a regular annual affair. Notable that India and Pakistan haven’t faced each other in bilateral series since 2012-13 when Pakistan toured India for a series of 3 ODIs and 2 T20Is. Pakistan won the ODI series by 2-1 margin while the T20I series was drawn by 1-1.

“There is huge anticipation in Pakistan for the series against Australia”- Ramiz Raja

Since then the two teams have met only in multinational tournaments like World Cup, Champions Trophy or Asia Cup.

PCB chairman Ramiz Raja also told that there is huge anticipation in Pakistan for the series against Australia. Notable that this will be Australia’s first tour to Pakistan since 1998. In March-April, Australia is scheduled to play 3 Tests, 3 ODIs and one T20I. The test series will also be part of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23.

Meanwhile, Raja has been quite heartened by the recent comments of Pakistan-born Australia player Usman Khawaja as Khawaja urged his teammates to travel to Pakistan for the series.

Raja has been trying hard to revive cricket in Pakistan as he arranged the home series against Australia, England, and New Zealand in the next 18 months. Notable that last year New Zealand opted out of the Pakistan tour at the last minute as they received a security threat. But Ramiz Raja ensured all touring teams provide full security.

In last month West Indies also travelled to Pakistan however the tour was cut short due to a covid outbreak in the West Indies camp. Pakistan clean swept the T20I series by 3-0 while the ODI series has been postponed to April 2021.

Meanwhile, Pakistan is also searching for a foreign coach as a stand-in coach Saqlain Mushtaq is not keen to take the job on a full-time basis. Raja consulted with captain Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan as they all are on the same page that a foreign coach would benefit Pakistan more.

Earlier in the T20 World Cup Pakistan appointed Matthew Hayden and Vernon Philander as batting and bowling consultants respectively for the tournament.
