West Indies will begin their tour with 3-match starting from February 6 in Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Kolkata respectively.  While Cuttack, Visakhapatnam, and Thiruvananthapuram will host the T20I matches starting from February 15. Sources from BCCI said that the board is having a close eye on the situation and they weighing in for the option to host all 6 games at a single venue. However, there is no panic situation as yet as the visitors have two more weeks to arrive here in India.

West Indies is currently preparing for 5-match T20I series against England starting next week on January 23.

For the past two years, the players have made a habit of moving from one bubble to another in this Covid situation.

Ahead of the series against West Indies, one good news for India is that their ODI and T20I skipper Rohit Sharma has recovered from his hamstring injury and will be available for the home season. Rohit missed the entire South Africa tour due to this injury as India lost the test series by 1-2. ODI series will begin on January 19 as KL Rahul will be stand-in captain for India.

India has a packed home schedule after this South Africa series. Apart from the series against West Indies, India will also host Sri Lanka for a series comprising 2 Tests and 3 T20Is starting on February 25.

Then all Indian players will be busy in IPL for 2-months as this time it will be a 10-team affair. Post-IPL, India will host South Africa for a 5-match T20I series to be played in June. So the BCCI will have to do lots of planning to organize all these series in this chaos.

In last season India hosted England for 4 Tests, 5 T20Is, and 3 ODIs across 3 venues in Chennai, Ahmedabad, and Pune.

Ottis Gibson Steps Down As Bangladesh Pace Bowling Coach

Bangladesh pace bowling coach Ottis Gibson has decided not to renew his contract as the 52-year old is all set to join Multan Sultans in Pakistan Super League starting on January 27.

Gibson has been working with the team for two years. Recently Bangladesh achieved a historic test win in New Zealand as they beat the hosts by 8 wickets at Mount Maunganui to get their first-ever win in New Zealand in any format.

Gibson has been working with Bangladesh since Jan 2020

“Ottis Gibson didn’t want to renew his contract which we accepted, Local coaches will look after the fast-bowling department temporarily. We hope to replace Gibson with another foreign coach shortly,” Jalal Yunus, BCB’s cricket operations committee chairman, told ESPNcricinfo.

Gibson already had a very long career as a coach. The 52-year old had coaching stints with England, West Indies and South Africa previously. The high point of his coaching career was when West Indies won the Men’s T20 World Cup in 2012.

He had two stints as England bowling coach as well, first time he joined the England team in 2007 and worked with the team for more than two years before moving to West Indies as their head coach. Then he joined them again after ODI World Cup 2015. England revived their limited-overs side under his guidance.

However, a poor tour in India where England conceded the Test series by 0-4 and also conceded 300 runs in each of the 3-ODIs, ended his deal with England.

Later he joined South Africa for a two-year stint as head coach from 2017. The contract ended as South Africa was knocked out in the group stage. Then in January 2020, he was appointed as pace bowling coach of Bangladesh replacing former South Africa pacer Charl Langeveldt.

Bangladesh is likely to find another foreign coach for this role. The likes of Ian Pont, Shane Jurgensen, Heath Streak, Courtney Walsh have worked with them previously as fast bowling coach.

Meanwhile, Ottis Gibson will start his PSL stint with Multan Sultans as they will start their campaign match against Karachi Kings on January 27.

West Indies-Ireland Second ODI Postponed Due To Covid Cases

West Indies and Ireland have decided to postpone the second ODI which was scheduled to play on January 11. On Monday three new Covid cases emerged in the Ireland squad which takes the total tally to five in the visiting camp.

West Indies took a 1-0 lead in the first match

“The second CG Insurance One-Day International scheduled for Sabina Park on Tuesday, January 11 has therefore been postponed.CWI and CI are in discussions to review the match schedule and are working to explore all possibilities for the series to be completed,” the joint media release said.

“The five members of the Ireland team who have returned positive COVID-19 results remain in isolation under the care and supervision of the medical teams,” the release added.

Notable that Ireland’s ODI series against the USA was cancelled last month due to a covid outbreak. Though there was no player from Ireland who tested positive. But it’s family and staff members who were tested positive and the players were deemed as close-contacts so eventually they called off the series.

In this series against West Indies, Ireland was scheduled to play 3 ODIs and one-off T20I at Kingston. In the first match, West Indies beat the visitors by 24 runs. West Indies posted a total of 269 with the help of a 155-run stand between Shamarh Brooks and Kieron Pollard. In response, Ireland was cruising at one moment as Andy Balbirinie and Harry Tector scored the fifties But Ireland collapsed to lose their last 9 wickets in space of 80 runs and fell short by 24 runs.

This was the 7th ODI between the two sides in West Indies, Ireland hasn’t beaten the hosts yet. However, they won two ODIs in West Indies which was way back in the 2007 ODI World Cup when they upset Pakistan in the group stage and also got the better of Bangladesh in the Super-8 stage.

BCCI May Consider Hosting India-West Indies Series In One Or Two Venues

BCCI may consider reducing the number of venues for India West Indies series due to covid outbreak in the country. As the things stand, West Indies is set a play a series of 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is starting from February 6. But the BCCI officials said that the fixtures might be revised as the situation gets worse from here on. Cricket West Indies is also ready to co-operate with the decision if the BCCI sends any such request.

“A request for such a change has not reached to me as yet. But we accept such operational actions by local boards in the interest of what is best for implementing health protocols,” CWI chief Ricky Skerritt told Cricbuzz recently.

According to the current schedule, West Indies will spend 3-day isolation in Ahmedabad on February 1. Then they will practice on February 4 and 5.

West Indies will begin their tour with 3-match starting from February 6 in Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Kolkata respectively.  While Cuttack, Visakhapatnam, and Thiruvananthapuram will host the T20I matches starting from February 15.

“Nothing has been decided as of now. This is a fluid situation and we are keeping an eye on the situation, and we will take a call at an appropriate time,” a senior BCCI official said.

Notable that BCCI postponed all their domestic tournaments which included Ranji Trophy due to a covid outbreak across the country.

But India has a long home season to follow. Apart from West Indies, they will also host Sri Lanka for a series of 2 Tests and 3 T20Is in February-March. Then there will be a 2-month window for IPL 2022 in which there will be 10 teams this time. And post IPL, India will host South Africa in a 5-match T20I series in June this year.

Desmond Haynes

Desmond Haynes represented West Indies in 116 Tests and 238 ODIs

Haynes will take over from Roger Harper whose contract had expired at the end of 2021. Haynes played 116 Tests for West Indies and scored 7487 runs with 18 hundreds. He also represented West Indies in 238 ODIs and scored 8648 runs with 17 hundreds. He held the world record of most ODI hundreds and leading run-scorer till 1998. He also captained West Indies in 4 Test matches and 7 ODIs.

Earlier Haynes showed interest to become head coach of West Indies in 2019 but eventually, Phil Simmons got the job. However, he is excited about this new role.

“I would like to thank president Skerritt and the CWI board of directors for giving me the opportunity to serve West Indies cricket once again, Being a selector is a thankless task, but a critical role in our cricket system, and I am honoured to be appointed,” Haynes said in a statement.

“I have always indicated that I would assist West Indies cricket in any way possible and I see this as an opportunity to do just that. I pledge to carry out my duties in a fair and professional manner,” he added.
West Indies haven’t had a great run of late as they were knocked out in the group stage of the T20 World Cup. And as far as test cricket is concerned, Sri Lanka whitewashed them in 2-match series, and recently when they traveled Pakistan with a depleted side, they were whitewashed again with a 3-0 margin in T20Is while their ODI series was postponed further due to covid outbreak in their camp.
West Indies’s next assignment will be 5-match T20I series against England then they will travel to India for ODI and T20I series. Their next test series will be against England when they will host Joe Root & Co. for 3-match series.

The third game is scheduled to play on December 16. Due to the Covid-19 scare, all games were scheduled in Karachi.

After the T20I series, there is a 3-match ODI series scheduled to play at Karachi starting on December 18. But it will be interesting to see whether West Indies wants to go ahead with the tour or not.

Earlier in Sep-Oct, New Zealand and England opted out from the Pakistan tour due to security concerns. If the series gets cancelled from here, PCB will have to bear another big financial loss.
