I Have Been Going Non-Stop: Jason Holder Reveals That He Has Not Gone Home For Six Months

West Indies Test captain — Jason Holder opens up on his struggle with living in bio-bubble for a longer period. He has revealed that as of now, he has been away from his home for six months because he has been constantly been touring for his national team while also playing franchise leagues.

Jason Holder has been moving from one bio-bubble to another since the comeback of cricket after the outbreak of the coronavirus. In July, he first went with the West Indies team to England to play the Test series. This follows with his stint in Carreban Premier League, which was hosted at home but he could not meet his family because of the bio-secure bubble and new COVID-19 norms.

After CPL, he travelled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 after SunRisers Hyderbad called him as the replacement of Mitchell Marsh. From there, he flew to New Zealand and remained in 14-days mandatory quarantine to feature in the two-match Test series, where his team faced a clean sweep.

Being constantly touring and remaining in a confined environment, Jason Holder stated that it was a tough year for him as he could not meet his family.

“It has been a tough year. Not just for the team but for me personally. I haven’t seen home in six months now. I have been going non-stop.

“Going from bubble to bubble and being isolated into a hotel room … it sometimes get smaller and smaller by the second,” Jason Holder told reporters.

The allrounder, who now heads to Australia for the Big Bash League, stated that he doesn’t want to miss any opportunity while wants to enjoy the current situation.

“It’s a situation where you’re still trying to make a living and make use of every opportunity you get,” said Jason Holder,  before joining the West Indies for their tour of Bangladesh in January.

“At this point I am still enjoying it. Still enjoying moving around. I’m trying to make use of every opportunity I get and hope it works out for me.”

Meanwhile, It will be the first BBL season for Jason Holder. He has signed up a three-match deal with Sydney Sixers.

Need To Deliver And Stopped Talking – Jason Holder Tells WI Team After Losing First Test Match Against New Zealand

West Indies Test captain Jason Holder has urged his team to fight harder after getting defeated in the first Test match against New Zealand by an innings and 134-run in Hamilton.

New Zealand gave an embarrassing follow-on to West Indies after they were bundled out for 138 runs in their first innings while chasing 519 runs. However, nothing changed for the visitors’ in the second innings as Neil Wagner got better of them.

West Indies lost six wickets for 89 before Alzzari Joseph, and Jermaine Blackwood stitched up 155 runs partnership. The young pacer Kyle Jamieson broke the daunting partnership, and the visitors were all out for 247 runs.

We need to fight harder: Jason Holder.

Jason Holder has slammed the batters for their poor display, but he has credit Blackwood and Joseph to build a much-needed partnership that ensured the visitors were not bowled out twice in one day.

“Our batting wasn’t good enough in both innings,” Jason Holder said.

“Credit to Jermaine and Alzarri to bring some respectability to our batting but quite frankly our top-order needs to stand up.”

The allrounder added that it’s high time for his team as they need to put a fighting battle in the second Test match.

“I think it’s time we started delivering and stopped talking. We have talked and promised a lot,” Holder said.

“But now it’s a matter to all look at ourselves in the mirror and understand that we need to fight harder. We have just got to turn it around. Only we can do that,” Jason Holder said.

The second test in the two-match series starts at the Basin Reserve. Holder said it was likely that fast bowler Kemar Roach would return home after his father died shortly before the first test started.

New Zealand Announce 13-Man Squad Each For Test And ODI Leg Against The West Indies

New Zealand seam bowler Tim Southee will lead the T20 side against the West Indies that is set to kickstart from the 27th of November. The selectors have rested Trent Boult and Kane Williamson from the three-match T20 series, allowing them time to prepare for the subsequent Test leg against the Caribbeans. Uncapped batsman Devon Conway receives a call-up while Colin Munro misses out owing to his BBL stint with Perth Scorchers.

It is imperative to note that the likes of Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson and Ross Taylor would only be available for the first two T20Is and the replacements for the trio are Doug Bracewell, Scott Kuggeleijn, and Mark Chapman, allowing them to stay fresh for the Test series. Devon Conway, the South African born batsman, qualified to play for New Zealand this August, topped the run-scoring charts in Plunket Shield, One-Day Trophy and T20 Super Smash last season.

Head coach Gary Stead is looking forward to welcoming Devon Malcolm in the T20 set-up as Colin Munro heads to Australia to ply his trade for the Perth Scorchers. In the southpaw’s absence, the selectors are keen to look at other options.

We’re looking forward to welcoming Devon into our environment for the first time and I’m sure he’ll soak up the experience. With Colin Munro heading to the Big Bash and therefore unavailable for the Pakistan T20 series pre-Christmas, the selectors are keen to look at other batting options at the top of the order,” Gary Stead told ESPN Cricinfo.

Gary Stead mentioned that given how Kane Williamson and Trent Boult are essential for the Test team and having played IPL, they thought to give them some rest and heal. With their 2-0 victory over India earlier this year in February, Stead remains confident that the Kiwis are on track to play the ICC World Test Championship final whenever it takes place.

“We’ve had to make a decision on Kane and Trent to prioritise the Test matches, given how important they are to our red-ball team and the fact they both played such big roles in the recent IPL while also managing injuries. There’s no secret we’re right in the hunt for the World Test Championship final following our 2-0 win over India [in February], and having Trent and Kane fully fit and focused for the upcoming series will be crucial,” Stead mentioned.

All-rounder Colin De Grandhomme and spinner Ajaz Patel, both of who are battling injuries have made it to the 13-man Test squad. Gary Stead claimed that they would require some time to recover; however, remain hopeful that over the next two weeks, things will become clear.

Colin and Ajaz have quite different injuries which are requiring different return-to-play protocols. It’s too early at this stage to definitively say what their chances are, but we’re hopeful the next two weeks will make that clearer,” he added further.

Auckland will play the host for the first T20 international while Mount Manganui for the next two. On the other hand, Hamilton and Wellington will stage the first and second Test, respectively.

New Zealand T20 Squad: Tim Southee (c) (to be replaced by Mark Chapman after the first two games), Hamish Bennett, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Kyle Jamieson (to be replaced by Scott Kuggeleijn after the first two matches), Daryll Mitchell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Glenn Phillips, Tim Seifert, Ross Taylor (to be replaced by Doug Bracewell after the first two games).

New Zealand Test squad: Kane Williamson (c), Tom Blundell, Trent Boult, Colin De Grandhomme, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Ajaz Patel, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling (wk), Will Young.

Daren Sammy Eyeing International Comeback After Long Hiatus

Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy last played for his country back in 2016 when he led his team to glory in the T20 World Cup after beating England in the final. Subsequently, he turned out to play for World XI on the tour of Pakistan but didn’t get a chance to play for the West Indies. Sammy who is the only captain to lead his team to two T20 World Cup titles has revealed that he would be eyeing an International comeback.

Sammy, who is known for his pyrotechnics stated that the lockdown period has helped him reflect on certain things and he is now determined to come back. The former all-rounder has been in the news for his strong statements regarding the Black Lives Matter movement.

Daren Sammy hasn’t given up hope

The 36-year old still harbors hopes of making a comeback and he would like to tick the right boxes in the domestic circuit as well as different T20 leagues to catch the eyes of the selectors. Sammy will lead St Lucia Zouks in the upcoming Caribbean Premier League, which is all set to begin from August 18.

“I have had a lot of soul searching and reflection in the past few months. Anybody who”s been at home in the lockdown all these months would not have done justice to themselves if they didn’t glean over things,” Sammy was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“I have not retired. I have not closed that door and if I take care of what I have to do for St. Lucia and get us to the playoffs along with my own very good performances that will certainly make selectors take notice of it,” the two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain said.

Sammy was dropped as captain in 2016 and could not break into the team since then. The right-hander will look to lead St Lucia Zouks from the front and impress one and all with his performances.

Daren Sammy has scored 587 runs in 68 T20I matches and has scalped 44 wickets. There is still a lot of time to go for the 2021 T20 World Cup and consistent performances in CPL can help Sammy make his way back into the national team.

Ben Stokes Becomes Second Fastest To Double Of 4000 Test Runs And 150 Wickets

England’s interim captain Ben Stokes has become the second-fastest to reach the double of 4000 Test runs and 150 wickets, achieving both the feats in 64 Test matches. Former West Indies legend Sir Gary Sobers is the fastest to the landmark as he got to the aforementioned double in 63 Test matches. Ian Botham, Kapil Dev, Daniel Vettori, and Jacques Kallis are the other four players to achieve the same milestone.

Stokes who had earlier completed 4000 runs, reached 150 Test wickets when he dismissed West Indies fast bowler Alazarri Joseph, who scored a little cameo of 18 runs. Stokes was at his best despite having being hurt his leg, as he picked four wickets on the day.

Ben Stokes has been in sublime form

Stokes had the best bowling as he snared 4-49 to keep his team in the contest. The right-arm pacer provided the much-needed breakthrough when he pinned Kraigg Brathwaite in front of the wickets when he was on 65 runs.

Subsequently, when the West Indies were threatening to extend their lead, Stokes picked up three quick wickets. The England captain got his revenge against his opponent’s counterpart, Jason Holder, when he banged the ball short and Jofra Archer took a good catch at deep fine leg.

A short and wide delivery then took a feather of Shane Dowrich’s bat to Jos Buttler. Alazarri Joseph was getting some quick runs but his knock was put a kibosh by Stokes when he found the gap between bat and pad to hit the top of stumps.

Mark Wood finally got a wicket when he went through the defenses of Shannon Gabriel. West Indies racked 318 runs and thus took a healthy lead of 114 runs to put themselves in front.

England would need to fight back with the bat to keep themselves in the game as they still trail by 99 runs. The English openers were able to negate 10 overs before the close of play.

Ben Stokes Proud To Be In A Position To Lead England

English all-rounder Ben Stokes has said that he is proud to be in a position to lead the England National Cricket Team where he might replace Joe Root as England skipper against the West Indies. Ben Stokes has not captained any side since he was a teenager. Stokes was restored to his position as Test vice-captain in July 2019, nearly a year after being found not guilty of affray following an incident outside a nightclub.

Stokes could find himself leading out the team for next week’s first Test at Southampton, or later in the three-match series, should Joe Root, the regular captain, be absent attending the birth of his second child. Stokes played a key role in England’s World Cup triumph before scoring a stunning century at Headingley to win an astounding Test victory over Australia.

Now, Stokes has said that said he would accept the huge honour if it came his way. West Indies will take on England in the first of the three-match series from July 8.

Ben Stokes Opens Up On His Captaincy Role In The England Cricket Team

“Even if it’s only the once you can still say ‘yeah, I’ve captained England’,” he told a conference call on Monday.

“After that happened it was ‘right, what am I going to do from this point forward?” Stokes told Sky in a separate interview as he recalled the incident. “How am I going to carry and conduct myself?”.

“I’m quite proud to say I’m in this situation through hard work and determination. I wanted to get better and it’s been no fluke,” Stokes added.

England To Play Against West Indies In The Series That Marks The Return Of Cricket

England are currently slated to face West Indies in the three-match Test series starting July 8 at the Ageas Bowl. Also, The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is contemplating relaxing their Covid-19 testing policy ahead of the tour of England.

West Indies Players To Wear The ‘Black Lives Matter’ Logo On Their Jersey

Cricket West Indies (CWI) said on Monday their players will wear ‘Black Lives Matter’ logos on the collar of their shirts throughout their three-test series in England next month. West Indies have been allowed to use the same emblem designed by Watford captain Troy Deeney’s partner Alisha Hosannah, the CWI said in a statement.

Earlier, former West Indian skipper Daren Sammy has stressed that the International Cricket Council (ICC) must educate young cricketers about racism in the sport. Daren Sammy has been the flagbearer of the recent movement against racism in cricket and has voiced out his opinion multiple times in the last month or so.

English Premier League soccer clubs have been wearing the logo since the season’s restart as a tribute to protests against racial injustice following the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25.

West Indies Players To Don The Black Lives Matter Logo On Their Jersey

“We believe we have a duty to show solidarity and also to help raise awareness,” West Indies skipper Jason Holder said in the statement.
“This is a pivotal moment in history for sports, for the game of cricket and for the West Indies cricket team,” Holder added.

“We have come to England to retain the Wisden Trophy but we are very conscious of happenings around the world and the fight for justice and equality,” Jason Holder added.

A Lot Of Cricketers Have Been Vocal About Racism In Cricket

Tom Moody, Isa Guha, and Ian Bishop all supported Sammy’s views and said that it is must to eliminate such sort of filth not only from the gentleman’s sport but from the world. Earlier, Chris Gayle had also supported Sammy and said that he too had faced a lot of racist remarks over the years in his international cricket career.

James Anderson and West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo also stressed upon the issue in recent times and said that there is an urgent need to eliminate racism from the world.

On This Day In 1983: Team India Lifted Its First-Ever World Cup Trophy

There have been quite a few historic pictures in the Indian cricket fraternity that narrate the story of India’s uprise in world cricket. The first of which will always be Kapil Dev lifting the world cup trophy at the Lord’s Cricket Ground and the pillars of Indian cricket cherishing team India’s arrival in the cricketing circuit as the world watched in amazement.

It was in 1983  that the Indian team announced that they will be the future of world cricket in the years to follow. Going into the tournament, nobody expected the Men in Blue to lift the trophy on the final day. West Indies were a force to reckon with as they were the favourites when the tournament began and also throughout its course.

Interestingly, the underdogs and the favourites collided in the final and when the teams headed into the dressing room at half-time, the West Indian giants still looked the favourites to clear the finishing line. But what unfolded in the second half was nothing short of a miracle from team India.

Indian Batsmen Could Not Face The Heat Of The West Indian Bowlers

To the dismay of the Men in Blue, West Indies won the toss in the final. They elected to field first and back then it was a 60-over game. Windies knew that their strength lay in their fast bowling attack and their tall and robust pacers could easily dominate the comparatively short and frightened Indian batsmen.

India vs West Indies
Cricket World Cup 1983 Final at Lord’s Mohinder Amarnath. Photograph by Patrick Eagar.

What actually took place was what the Indian team feared the most. Their experienced opener, Sunil Gavaskar, departed only when the team’s score was 2 runs. The other incoming batsmen followed Gavaskar’s path as wickets kept on falling at regular intervals for the Indian team and they were bowled out only for 183 runs in the first innings.

Sir Andy Roberts was the pick of the bowlers for West Indies as he scalped 3 crucial wickets in the final. For the Men in Blue, Kris Srikkanth was the lone wolf as he scored 38 runs with the bat and saw the team struggle in front of the West Indians. All hopes seemed to fade away for the Indian players and fans due to dismal batting performance.

The West Indies Strength Surrendered In Front Of The Indian Spirit

Heading out for the second innings, the underdogs looked determined to take it to wire and leave no room for error as they faced the mighty Windies. They were first elated when the West Indies lost a couple of wickets in the first 50 runs and the Indian team could visualize a ray of hope when Desmond Heynes returned to the pavilion and West Indies were 50-2.

Indian Team
The Indian Team. Image Credits: Twitter

However, the biggest threat for the Men in Blue was Sir Vivian Richards, the greatest batsman of his generation and one of the greatest-ever to grace the field of cricket. He was flamboyant in his approach ever since West Indies resumed action in the second half and had smashed 33 runs off 28 balls. The underdogs knew that it will take a special effort for them to get rid of Sir Viv Richards.

Then stepped up the skipper, Kapil Dev, and portrayed what leading from the front actually means. Sir Viv Richards pulled a ball over to the deep mid-wicket off Madan Lal and Kapil Dev saw it as an opportunity to catch not only the ball but the trophy as well. Running backwards, Kapil Dev pulled off a blinder as the Men in Blue sprung to rejoice and could see them winning their first-ever world cup title. The Windies batsmen succumbed to the pressure and were eventually bowled out for 140 runs.

The miracle had happened. The underdogs had become champions. The world was witnessing something that they never imagined would happen in a lifetime.

The Men in Blue had won the world cup and Mohinder Amarnath was awarded as the Man of the Match for his all-round contribution. Then came the iconic picture of Kapil Dev lifting the World Cup trophy at Lord’s and telling the world that a new team is coming to dominate world cricket in the years to follow. And the rest, as they say, is history.
