Tai Tzu Ying

Birmingham, March 13 (IANS) Top seed Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei won the women’s singles title of the All England Open badminton championships here, while the men’s doubles title went to the Indonesian duo of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

World No.1 Tai on Sunday beat former world champion and fifth seed Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 21-16, 22-20 in 51 minutes in the final to claim her country’s first trophy in this category at the All England.

“It was an intense match so I am happy to win. I don’t think I made too many mistakes. The scores were always close. During the second game I was trailing a few times but I kept telling myself not to give up,” Tai told Badminton World Federation (BWF) website.

“When Ratchanok attacks she is really good. She is very tricky so I did a lot of work on my defence. I was trying to find opportunities so I could beat her.”

In the men’s doubles final, Gideon and Sukamuljo defeated China’s Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen 21-19, 21-14 in 34 minutes, reports Xinhua news agency.

South Korea’s Chang Ye Na and Lee So Hee won the women’s doubles title as they beat Denmark’s Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christinna Pedersen 21-18, 21-13 in 47 minutes.

In the mixed doubles final, China’s Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong fought back from one game down to defeat Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh of Malaysia 18-21, 21-19, 21-14.

The men’s singles title went to top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia. Chong Wei breezed past Chinese debutant Shi Yuqi 21-12, 21-10 to win his fourth title at the world’s oldest badminton event.
