Both of them came to Eden Gardens on Monday. This time, there was no cricket match being held at the ground. It was a glass box, placed at the lounge, just in front of the dressing room where Jagmohan Dalmiya was laid down. The whole cricket fraternity of India paid tribute to the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) who died on Sunday night.
In the BCCI politics both of them had been busy in throwing stones at each other, even in the recent times, after Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals rocked the IPL, being accused of the match-fixing. One is Narayanaswami Srinivasan. Another is Sharad Pawar, the former BCCI president. Sharad Pawar, in association with another former BCCI president Shashank Manohar, heaved harsh criticism on and often claiming the ban of Srinivasan due to his involvement with accused Chennai Super king.
But the scenario seems to have changed with the demise of Dalmiya. And amidst the people being busy in paying tribute to Dalmiya on Sunday, the whispers started that in an unprecedented move Srinivasan and Sharad Pawar seems to be getting closer with a new equation. According to sources close to Sharad Pawar, his chances of sitting on the BCCI president’s chair look bright gradually as he has reportedly got verbal assurance of support from Srinivasan. And against the support, Srinivasan wants a promise also that BCCI will never disturb him. Srinivasan wants to be undisturbed by BCCI during his tenure as ICC chairman!
But at the same time, the ruling party in the board that is being officially led by Anurag Thakur, seems reluctant to agree with this equation. Rather it has learnt that the god-father of the BCCI, Mr Arun Jaitley wants such a name for the post of BCCI president who would be acceptable to everybody in the board. And in that scenario, Ajay Shirke might be the person to be chosen by Jaitley. Although, sources close to both Srinivasan and Pawar, refuted this notion and gave hint that along with Ajay Shirke, there is another man whose name can be proposed by Arun Jaitley in the BCCI annual general meeting, scheduled to be held on 5th October and that is Rajiv Shukla. And it has also been learnt that Mr Shukla has expressed a desire to be the president if he is unanimously chosen in the meeting on 5th October.
