Pakistan’s ace veteran, Mushtaq Ahmed, who played an unforgettable role in cruising his side to their first ever ride to the glory of conquering the Cup and emerging victorious in 1992 on the very same hard & bouncy pitches of Australia and New Zealand, shares his views with the TOI on the spinners endorsing this World Cup and also about how effectively has Ashwin been used by skipper Dhoni in this tournament so far.
Mushtaq feels that Dhoni has utilised Ashwin very well and has set good attacking fields for him, not allowing easy singles. He also compared it with the way Imran Khan utilised him in the 1992 World Cup, which Pakistan went on to win. Also, he added that Ashwin is better than Jadeja , although , he is impressed by both.
When asked if Ashwin is the best spinner in theWorld Cup so far , he said that it’s a bit difficult to say so but he added that he has been par with Daniel Vettori
Mushtaq added that spinners are match winners and in Australia and New Zealand , the team having quality spinners can exploit the conditions in the middle overs because of the bounce . When asked about the 4 fielders rule, he answered that the 4 fielders rule actually helps the quality spinners as the batsman will take more chances and the bowler has more chances of foxing the batsman. There are no easy singles available and that’s where you take the wickets.
