India lost to Australia by 48 runs in the first test at Adelaide. With India all set to win for the match when they needed 159 in over 35 overs when the teams went for tea. Many wouldn’t have expected a twist in the final session when India lost 8 wickets with 111 runs needed for a victory. Virat Kohli’s 141 went in vain as Nathan Lyon’s spell of 7-152 took the hosts home. Nathan Lyon’s 12 wickets in the match earns him the Man of the Match.

Virat Kohli, along with Murali Vijay looked well set as the duo shared a 185 partnership in the first two sessions of the fifth day’s play which tilted the match in favour of India. Both Vijay and Kohli batted with confidence throughout their innings and looked threatening to take India home before disaster struck team India. Vijay looked classy in the 99 runs he scored and got the pressure to his nerves when he needed a single to score his hundred and was trapped in front of his stumps off Nathan Lyon. It was when the floodgats opened for team India. It all started with a poor decision by the umpire to send Ajinkya Rahane back to the pavilion when he was adjudged caught at the short-leg off Nathan Lyon when the replays clearly indicated that the ball hit his pad before taking off.

Rohit Sharma, once again failed to hang in the middle and see India home along with Kohli as he was caught by Steve Smith at leg-slips before Wridhiman Saha threw his wicket away to Lyon as he stumped down the wicket to get castled. Indians’ hopes of winning the match was dashed when India Kohli holed out to Mitchell Marsh off Nathan Lyon with India needing just 60 to win. Australia cleaned up the tail quickly to put the hosts 1-0 ahead in the four match series.

The second match will begin in Brisbane on Wednesday (17 December 2014).
