Mic Maddinson’s swashbuckling knock of 84 led his side Sydney Sixers to a 8 wicket win over Melbourne Renegades at the SCG, Sydney.
Chasing 155 to win from 20 overs, Sixers were off to a flier as their openers Michael Lumb and Maddinson went on a leather hunt against the Renegades bowlers. The duo didn’t show any mercy on the Renegades pacers in the field restriction overs as they raced to 64 in the first eight overs before Lumb was caught plumb in front off Nathan Rimmington for a 25 ball 28. Skipper Moises Henriques joined Maddinson in the middle with 90 needed from the last 12 overs. Maddinson was the aggressor as he smashed the bowlers all around the ground and reached his fifty.
Henriques began slowly, set himself in and played a sensible knock that saw his side home without any further hiccups. With just 1 run needed for victory, Renegades’ West Indian duo struck as Dwayne Bravo caught Henriques off Andre Russell for 36. Ed Cowan came in and finished off the innings with a four a couple of balls later.
Maddinson remained unbeaten on 84 off 54 balls with 4 fours and 6 sixers, the highest score by a Sydney Sixers batsman in Big Bash League. He was eventually named the Player of the match.
Earlier in the day, Melbourne Renegades finished their innings on 154-7 inspite of a sensational start provided by Matthew Wade, who scored 35 off 8. Sean Abbott and Brett Lee applied the brakes on Renegades’ run-rate and pitched in with crucial wickets which hampered them from scoring big at the end of 20 overs. Abbott was brilliant in the middle overs as he scalped 2 wickets giving away 20 runs in his 4 overs and Brett Lee’s heroics with the ball in the slog overs earned him the figures of 2-21 in four overs. Callum Ferguson top scored for the visitors with 40 off 32 balls.
Brief Scores: Melbourne Renegades 154-7 (Callum Ferguson 40, Matthew Wade 35, Sean Abbott 2-20, Brett Lee 2-21) lost to Sydney Sixers 155-2 (Nic Maddinson 84*, Henriques 36) by 8 wickets
