Earlier, the team manager used to be appointed on tour to tour basis with every state of BCCI almost getting a chance but the tradition was halted when Committee of Administrators (CoA) jumped in the matter and did not allow a team manager appointed by BCCI travel with team India for the Windies series. Instead, Kapil Malhotra continued the duties for one more series before it was decided that the board will advertise for the post.
Though it was learned that the COA wanted only former players for the post, there is no such mention in the BCCI release. As per the release, the candidate should have managed a team at first class level or above, to apply for the post. In addition to that, the board has also asked for 10 years of work experience in public/private sector,
“The candidates who have (i) successfully managed a cricket team of any of the affiliated units of BCCI or the national teams, at the first class or at the International level, or (ii) have a minimum of ten years of work experience in public/private sector, will be preferred,” a statement of BCCI reads.
There has been a drastic change in the appointment of a team manager, as this is the first time when someone will get a chance to apply for the post, as earlier mentioned the apex board used to appoint a person in the role from any state association. The role of a team manager was something which never came into notice until the news of tussle between Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli came in open. It came to notice that team manager did not perform his role, as he neither convinced any meeting prior to the games in the long season nor had any meeting with the captain and the Head Coach.
His role just something to none which derived the interest of COA towards this and hence, the board has invited for the post to appoint a person who will be accountable.
