BCCI Or IPL: Rahul Dravid Has To Choose One Under New Annual Contract

With the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) all set to introduce a new annual contract for its coaches, support staff and physiotherapist, India Under-19 and India A coach Rahul Dravid will have to choose between country and franchise from the next season. The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) has decided to come up with the annual contracts in order to avoid a conflict of interest.
As per the current rule, the former India batsman was plying his trade for the BCCI for ten months, while he is allowed to work in the Indian Premier League for other two months now. The legendary batsman is the mentor of Delhi Daredevils. However, he will have to sort out his priorities from the upcoming season.
The backroom staff of Team India was also engaged in similar practices. Batting coach Sanjay Bangar, who is with the Indian team since 2014, was the head coach of Kings XI Punjab in the last couple of seasons, but stepped down from the post in December last year.
Fielding coach R Sridhar was also a part of Kings XI Punjab while physio Patrick Farhart and National Cricket Academy chief physio Andrew Leipus were associated with Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders respectively.
As per reports in the Indian Express, Dravid is fine with the 12-months contract but wants his contract terms to be renegotiated.
”We will pay him what he (Dravid) is getting in the IPL. By having 12 months of his services, we can add responsibilities, maybe at the NCA where zonal camps happen during the IPL. The BCCI doesn’t want another conflict of interest issue raised now, especially when the CoA is overseeing the board’s affairs. The new contract will not only be for Dravid but also for the support staff,” said BCCI sources.
Meanwhile, the BCCI has recently decided to give a 50 per cent pay hike to Sanjay Bangar and R Sridhar. The hike will see them earn Rs 1.5 Crore annually.
