Dinesh Chandimal will lead the Sri Lankan side in T20 series against New Zealand in New Zealand following a knee injury to Lasith Malinga, the cricket board announced on Tuesday.
Regular captain Malinga got injured during the home series against West Indies but was expected to play the two twenty matches against New Zealand that concludes the Sri Lankan tour of New Zealand.
“Lasith Malinga the T20 Captain is injured and unable to tour New Zealand. Dinesh Chandimal has been appointed as the stand-in captain for the T20 leg of the tour,” Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.
Sri Lanka had a poor tour so far losing the two test match series and had a disappointing One-day International series so far losing the first two One-day Internationals easily. Sri Lanka are missing Kusal Perera who has been suspended for failing a dope test and their premier strike bowler Dhammika Prasad who got injured before the tour.
They have also opener Gunathilka and paceman for the T20 matches on January 7th and January 10th. Sri Lanka has looked out of sorts in the series and needs something special to give New Zealand a tough fight.
Lasith Malinga has been their strike bowler for some time now but the injuries are taking its toll on him. It will be important for Malinga to stay fit for the World T20 in India and defend the title. It will be a big challenge for him.
