The chairman of the English Counties and the ECB are proposing for a change in the current format of the ODIs and the Test cricket. They want the ODIs to be shortened to 40 overs a side and the Test matches to be reduced to 4 days. If ICC agrees to this, we may see the next World Cup being played for 40 overs a side.

Test Crciket has been traditionally played for 5 days and it has been for more than 30 years now.  It was in 1973 New Zealand and Auckland played a Test match , scheduled for only 4 days . In another case in 1979, India and West Indies were invlved in a Test match which was officially scheduled for 6 days at Kanpur.

These changes so far have been proposed only for English Cricket and  will have to undergo long discussions if ICC wants to adopt this. But the facts that thses are being suggested makes it clear that this may well be seen in the near future. Also, ECB has decided to launch English Premier League, seeing the success of the IPL and the BIG Bash League and may well be a rival to all these and may clash the schedule. This will surely hurt the ECB as they are into terms with BCCI in the CLT20.
