India and England to face off in the lone T20 match at Edgbaston

After two months of mixed success and failure, India is expected to bring curtains to their England tour with a victory in the only T20 match at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Sunday. After a draw in the first test and a victory at Lords, India suffered three back to back defeats to lose the Test series 1-3. With wide criticism all over, they bounced back in the one day series. After the first match was abandoned due to rain, India won three consecutive matches to win the series. England managed to win the final match though at Headingley to reduce India’s margin of victory to 3-1. Now the two former T20 world champions face off in a T20 match at Edgbaston.

India will be banking on their strong batting line up to see them through the match. Both the openers Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane looked in good touch in the one dayers. Kohli will be hoping to get back to runs in the T20 match. Then India has the services of the two most prolific finishers in the form of Raina and Dhoni.

Jadeja will be expected to bowl slow and restrict the England batsmen from taking big shots. Both Kumar and Shami are picking up wickets and with the new ball a lot will rely on them. Ashwin and Raina will be Dhoni best bets to go through the middle overs without leaking a lot runs.

The biggest difference between India and England in this format will obviously be experience. All the players in the Indian team are well acquainted with this format with the virtue of playing in the IPL which the English players don’t have. However the team will be boosted with the inclusion all hard hitting all rounder Ravi Bopara and Tim Bresnan to give them some momentum which they dearly lacked in the one dayers. Alex Hales will also be the key to England’s success in this match. He scored a match winning hundred in the last T20 world cup in Bangladesh against Sri Lanka and the England team will be hoping that he comes up with a similar performance. From England’s point of view, Joe Root, who had just scored his ODI ton, will look to continue in similar fashion having got a fair idea of how to handle the Indian attack. The hosts have named uncapped Surrey batsman Jason Roy in their 14-man squad and it will be interesting to see if he is played or not.

However bowling will be a concern for England with the absence of James Anderson. Tim Bresnan has not played an international match since March. A lot will depend on Woakes and Finn to pick up wickets. In the absence of regular T20 captain Stuart Broad, Eoin Morgan will lead the squad. The match starts at 6pm Indian Standard Time.
