An array of former Indian greats, which includes the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, have vouched for Indian team participating in Champions Trophy. As per ESPNcricinfo, a total of 12 players namely Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Zaheer Khan, Gundappa Viswanath, Sandeep Patil, Sanjay Manjrekar, Aakash Chopra, Ajit Agarkar, Venkatesh Prasad, Saba Karim, Murali Kartik, and Deep Dasgupta are in favour of Indian team participating in Champions Trophy and get a chance to defend their title, which they won in the year 2013 by defeating England in the final.
There is still threat looming over the participation of Indian team in the tournament following a change in organisational and financial structure in ICC where BCCI was outvoted in both the aspects, resulting in a revenue loss for them.
The Indian cricket’s supreme body skipped the cutoff date for announcing the squad for the trophy and till now, the board hasn’t announced the squad and is mulling to quit the tournament.
However, in the latest news, it has been learnt that the Committee of Administrators (COA) led by Vinod Rai has directed BCCI to announce the squad for the Champions trophy immediately but it is to be noted that BCCI’s SGM is to take place on May 7, and the board is expected to take any decision regarding the participation after that only.
Looking at the current scenario, it looks like BCCI is no mood to take part in Champions Trophy but COA is forcing the board to take part in the league. They have also allegedly threatened to move to The Supreme Court of Indian if they find that decision is not in favour of the Indian team.
One can expect many surprises ahead as there may be a case when Board might announce the squad today itself or might not.
