Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian skipper has batted for Kolkata Knight Riders’ skipper Gautam Gambhir and has said that the left-handed batsman should be part of the Indian team in the Champions Trophy, which is set to start from June 1,
“Gambhir deserves a place in the national team for the forthcoming Champions Trophy. He is in excellent touch,” india.com quoted Ganguly as saying. “I am truly elated to have watched Gambhir’s dedication even after playing the game for so many years. More importantly, KL Rahul is yet to regain fitness following injury. So, it will be high time for the selectors to think over Gambhir for the Champions Trophy.”
At present, Gautam Gambhir is one of the highest run-scorer in the ongoing edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) and was the owner of the orange cap, till David Warner earned it with a century against KKR. Gambhir is currently sitting at the second place in the list of highest run-scorer with 411 runs in 11 matches at an average of 51.37.
With KL Rahul already been ruled out of the league, the Delhi batsman will face a direct competition with his statemate Shikhar Dhawan, who is in good form as he has scored 369 runs in 10 games in IPL 2017. Dhawan, though, was dropped from playing XI for the final ODI against England earlier this year due to poor form but the selectors might prefer him over Gambhir due to his great form in previous Champions Trophy.
If selectors look for a third established opener – the chances of this happening are little less – then Gambhir might be preferred over Ajinkya Rahane, who had not been in good form in limited overs cricket.
BCCI is yet to announce the squad for the Champions Trophy due to the tussle with ICC. There still looms a threat to team India’s participation in the ICC tournament but one has to wait for latest developments in this case. But surely, Gautam Gambhir will be one of the players who will be on selectors radar and might get a place for the ‘Mini World Cup’.
