India began day 2 at 319/6 with Wriddhiman Saha and Ravichandran at the crease. After a rock solid partnership which featured KL Rahul and Virat Kohli on day 1 which put India in a commanding position, Saha along with the tail added a valuable contribution on day 2 which saw India getting to 393. The major partnership for India came with Saha and Amit Mishra on day 2.
India went to lunch at 386/6 with Saha well settled at the crease as Ishant Sharma provided a good company. Post lunch it doesn’t take much time for the hosts to close out the Indian innings as they rolled the Indians out for 393 with Herath picking up the last two wickets.
Sri Lanka began their first innings in a horrific way as they lost their opener Karunaratne very early to an in-swinging delivery from Umesh Yadav. The wicket of Karunaratne brought Kumar Sangakkara to the crease for his penultimate innings in a Test match to a guard of honour from Indian players and of course from the match officials. Later the duo went to tea putting Sri Lanka in a decent position at 65/1
It was a tough time out there for the left hander as Umesh Yadav bowled beautiful lines and troubled Sangakkara early on. Sangakkara later settled down, but his stay at the crease wasn’t long as Ashwin once again got him out to a spinning delivery with Rahane being the catcher once again. Sangakkara departed for 32.
However, opener Silva cashed in after riding his luck. Stuart Binny was elated after getting his first wicket, but it wasn’t meant to be as he overstepped. Silva later went on to make a half-century but failed to carry on. He swept a turning ball from Amit Mishra which was scooped to a short fine leg and Ashwin took an easy catch which saw Silva walking to the pavilion for 51.
The departure of Silva brought the skipper Mathews to the crease. Mathews looked uncomfortable at the crease against Umesh Yadav going past the outside edge on few occasions. Yadav literally squared him up a couple of times and the Sri Lankan skipper doesn’t have any answer. Most importantly for Sri Lanka the skipper is at the crease. He along with Thirimanne saw through the day for Sri Lanka.
At the end of the Day, 2, Sri Lanka is 140/3 with Ashwin, Yadav and Mishra taking one wicket each.
Brief Scores: India 386/6(KL Rahul 108, Herath 4-81) Vs Sri Lanka 140/3 ( Kaushal Silva 51, Amit Mishra 1-7)
