The Indian women’s cricket team defeated New Zealand by 17 runs in the first match of the five match One Day international series at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru just few moments ago. It was a good performance by the Indian spin bowlers who put pressure on the New Zealand batsman but the Indian batsman needs to perform if they have do well in the upcoming matches.
Chasing a modest total of 143 the New Zealand batters were never in the chase. They lost the early wicket of Priest for 0 playing 19 balls. Satahwarite and Bates put up a 14 runs second wicket partnership. The New Zealand batters lost wickets at regular intervals. The top scorer for New Zealand was Suzie Bates scoring 28 off 57, while Kasprek contributed 21 runs. The pick of the bowlers for India was S Rana who took 3 wickets for 26 runs, Jhulan Gowswami was brilliant with her bowling giving away 25 runs in 10 over’s though she did not take any wickets.
Earlier in the day, India won the toss and elected to bat. The Indian innings too began very poorly losing Raut for 5. The Indian batters got in and were dismissed cheaply. Mithali Raj was dismissed for a respectable score of 17. At one stage India were struggling at 87 for 8 but Jhulan Gowswami played a crucial knock of 57 to help India to post a total which India could defend.
With this win India take a 1-0 lead in the series. This series is important for both these teams fighting for first four spots for the World Cup in 2017. The next match will be played on 1st of July.
