Royal Challengers Bangalore climb to the third spot in the IPL points table as they beat Kings XI Punjab by 138 runs at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore. With this, they have registered their second highest winning margin in terms of runs in IPL falling just two short 2 short of Kolkata Knight Riders’ 140 run win over Bangalore at the same venue in the first edition of IPL.
After put into bat, it was West Indian Chris Gayle’s show as he toyed with the Kings XI bowlers in his 57 ball stay at the crease. He smashed the bowlers all around the ground and scored his 14th Twenty20 hundred. First he shared a 119 run partnership with skipper Virat Kohli for the first wicket before Sandeep Sharma yorked Kohli for a 30 ball 32. Then it was AD de Villiers who shared a 71 run partnership with Gayle in just over 5 overs before Gayle was dismissed for a 57 ball 117 caught by Akshar Patel off his own bowling.
Man of the Match Gayle scored 7 fours and 12 sixes in his innings and also tried to replicate the celebration of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo after reaching the landmark. Dinesh Karthik and Sarfraz Khan hit some quick runs towards the end and took their side to a total of 226-3 in 20 overs. De Villiers was unbeaten on 47 off 24 balls with 3 fours and 4 sixes.
Chasing 227 to win, Kings XI Punjab were never in contention in chasing down the total as they lost their wickets in quick succession. Sreenath Aravind and Mitchell Starc ran through their line up as Kings XI were bundled out for just 88 in 13.4 overs. Akshar Patel remained unbeaten on 40 off 21 balls while Aravind and Starc took 4 wickets apiece.
