The Indian left-handed batsman and skipper of IPL franchise Gujarat Lions, Suresh Raina, has said that he was disappointed after Rising Pune Supergiant franchise removed MS Dhoni as the skipper of the side to hand over the reins to Steven Smith,
“I was disappointed. He has done so well for the country as well as for the IPL teams. He should be respected every time. It’s about not me saying, it’s the world saying,” Raina told PTI in an interview.
Both Raina and Dhoni had been part of the now defunct Chennai Super Kings (CSK) since the inception till the eighth edition of the league. However, both of them had to part ways when the franchise was banned by The Supreme Court of India.
Dhoni was purchased by Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL draft, whereas, Suresh Raina went to Gujarat Lions.
Both the players had contrary fortunes in IPL 9, as Dhoni-led Pune side was placed at the seventh position with just five wins in 14 games, whereas, Raina-led Gujarat side finished the group stage as the table toppers.
In the month of January earlier this year, MS Dhoni relinquished the post of captain of Indian cricket team and the Pune-based franchise decided to replace him with Steven Smith – keeping in mind previous form and Dhoni’s decision.
Raina though said that this thing is not at all affecting MS Dhoni’s form as he said,
“I don’t think. He’s back among runs. Hope he will do well better after two-three matches. We have only played five matches. After some time the picture will be clear. He should bat up the order and bat long. He’s a world class finisher.”
“The time I spent with Chennai Super Kings will always remain special. We have won so many trophies, be it IPL or Champions League T20. When I was very young, it gave me a great learning opportunity by being among all the legends,” he further added while recalling the time spent in CSK camp along with Dhoni.
As a player, Suresh Raina never missed a game for Chennai Super Kings.
