IPL 2017: Twitter Reacts As Kings XI Punjab Beat Mumbai Indians In A Thriller

  • Mohit Sharma defended 16 runs off the last over as Kings XI Punjab defeated Mumbai Indians by 7 runs in a thriller to keep their playoff hopes alive

Chasing an improbable 230, Mumbai Indians went off to a flying start with Parthiv Patel and Lendl Simmons adding 99 runs from just 52 deliveries. But suddenly they found themselves in huge trouble when all of their top-four batsmen departed inside 22 runs. However, a 21-ball 55 runs partnership between Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya brought the hosts back into the match before the latter was sent back Sandeep Sharma.

With 39 runs needed from the final three overs, Karn Sharma played a quickfire knock of 19 runs from just 6 balls to give his side a great chance to pull off a sensational win. However, a brilliant penultimate over from Sandeep Sharma where he conceded just 7 runs brought the Kings XI right into the match as Mumbai needed 16 runs from the final over.

Pollard began the over by scoring 8 runs off the first two balls before deciding against taking a single on the third delivery to keep the strike with him. Mohit Sharma then bowled two dot balls as Mumbai finished on 223 for 6.

Earlier, Wriddhiman Saha’s first fifty of this season and quickfire knocks from Martin Guptill and Glenn Maxwell had fired the Kings XI to a massive 230 for 3. With a do-or-die situation, the Punjab-based outfit promoted Saha to open the innings with Guptill and the wicketkeeper-batsman totally justified the decision by playing an unbeaten knock of 93 runs off just 55 deliveries.

Kings XI’s new opening combinationĀ gave them a flying start by 68 runs in just 33 balls. Maxwell then scored 47 off just 21 balls to lay the foundation for a massive total. Saha remained until the end to ensure his team put up a good total on a good batting pitch.
