It’s Chaos Everywhere, Missing MS Dhoni?

The sane ones, who normally try to train their focus on work rather than unnecessary drama, are often misunderstood.

Just like in the case of MS Dhoni.

Ever since he handed over the captaincy, an insecurity has spread among his followers. The fear of watching Dhoni survive without the immunity of captaincy in the team has brought uneasiness. Also, there has been no firm answer to whether what lies ahead for him as the preferred wicketkeeper-batsman. To make things more tense and intriguing, Dhoni himself is very unpredictable and can drop the final retirement bomb in his trademark impromptu style at any time champion trophy most runs

For now, Dhoni is an ageing cricketer. Half of the crowd feels he is done with is a career; the other half believes he isn’t going anywhere till 2019.   icc champions trophy most runs

While all this debates and discussions are happening with Dhoni slowly living his cricketing life adjusting to various batting positions, the Indian team has entered a messy situation at the moment which perfectly sums up why the team needs Dhoni more than ever.

It is amusing to think India, the ODI unit, can do without him in the near future. No one stays around forever but the question surrounding ‘MS Dhoni’ and his future looks better in the cans as for now.  This isn’t an overstatement. This is a reality.

When he handed over the leadership mantle to Virat Kohli, it was a welcome change. After successfully proving his leadership skills in the Tets format, the successor seemed completely fit to lead India in all three formats.

But, Kohli, for some strange reasons, seems like a person in love with controversies. At the moment, in the cricketing world, there seems no one better than him who can grab the headlines for over-aggressiveness and overstatements.

He is arguably the best batsman in the world but certainly not the most promising captain around simply because of the downsides in his personality. If we compare him to his contemporaries – Steve Smith and Kane Williamson – who have spent considerable times as leaders, the 28-year-old looks just a wannabe despite having all the potential to become the best of the leader as well.

Discipline, commitment and intent have been evident only in his batsmanship and fitness regimes and as far as the leadership goes, he is still miles away from earning the respect of the masses. The doubt whether he will be a suitable long-term option to lead in all formats has now started to linger in the minds of fans, at least in the social media.

While, everyone is replaceable, for the obvious reasons, it can be easily understood that Kohli puts himself in the unnecesarry problem which makes Dhoni’s presence very important. The importance of a level-headed leader has been put on display.

The only intention of this negative looking analysis of Kohli’s captaincy is to convey the fact that ‘Team India’ is certainly not ready for life without MS Dhoni. Kohli’s nature, unfortunately, is making everyone sceptical about his captaincy success.

A year back, the fans had no memories of what controversies were like, especially the dressing room dramas. Dhoni perhaps knew how to keep everything under control. But, Kohli has this quality missing. His time as captain has already seen coach Anil Kumble leave with bad life experience.

Kumble’s resignation and his letter have spilt the beans about his behaviour. It’s sad to see a gentleman of the game walking out in such fashion. The words put out in the letter after the announcement easily makes one assume that there was clash of egos.

If the coach is made to fall for the arrogance of the skipper what about the players then? Wouldn’t it be wrong to see a couple of names get ousted just because Kohli felt they weren’t suitable?

But, all these facts pointed out can be proved wrong, as we know only half the story till now; the other half is yet to reveal. Taking sides would be silly but few things are clear.

Kohli isn’t bad. He is just showing a lack of pragmatic decision making. By letting emotions take control of him, he is just digging a grave for the ‘legends’ status that has been beckoning him ever since he made waves with the Under-19 victory back in 2008.

Fortunately, there is an antidote available to the problem – MS Dhoni.

Just when we thought Dhoni’s worth was depreciating, his qualities and achievements in the past have magnified the importance of his presence in the side. It appears only he can show Kohli the way ahead at the moment, directly or indirectly. All the wisdom needs to be passed on.

It can be easily concluded that Dhoni is set to play a larger role in his post captaincy days.

When everything is in a mess, someone who can take control of things is required. Dhoni can do that. During his final couple of years as skipper, the 35-year-old was a misunderstood man.

He was assumed to be too defensive in nature. Some said the fire and aggression were missing from the side ad held him responsible for it. But, now, eventually, we have learnt the importance of carrying Dhoni-like qualities while leading the team.

The fans, naysayers and the critics – all seem to have started missing their former captain as various controversies surround Team India. As mentioned earlier, we only recognise the ‘calm guy’ in turbulent times and not when it’s just easy to sail with the breeze.
