Sydney Sixers pacer Joe Mennie, who had received a nasty blow on his head during a training session ahead of the Big Bash League semi-final, has been cleared of serious injury.
The fast-bowler, who had made his Test debut for Australia last year against South Africa, was bowling in the nets ahead of Wednesday’s semi-final against Brisbane Heat when a Michael Lumb shot hit him on the head. The 28-year-old was initially given a concussion test before being taken to hospital for further treatment.
Former Australia wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, who too was present at the practice session, said that the incident was a scary one.
Speaking to Sky Sports Radio, he said:
“It was a bit of a scary incident actually. He was bowling in the nets and Michael Lumb got hold of one straight back and he’s followed through and got him in the head.”
“It was a bit uncomfortable for a couple of minutes but lucky Joe’s all right and he’s available for selection,” he added.
The horrific incident was also confirmed by Sydney Sixers.
“Joe Mennie was struck in the side of his head while bowling during yesterday’s training session and was taken to hospital for assessment and treatment,” a spokeswoman said.
“He was monitored and released last night with no complications and will see Cricket Australia doctors today to map out a return to play timeline.”
