Pakistan‘s humiliating defeat in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 at the hands of arch-rivals India didn’t do down too well back home as two former captains Javed Miandad and Mohammad Yousuf have launched a scathing attack on the T20 captain Mohammad Hafeez and called for star all-rounder Shahid Afridi to don the skipper’s hat.

Pakistan went into the World T20 carrying the tag of favorites having been the most consistent team in the shortest format in recent times, reaching the semi finals of the World T20 on all four occasions, but the manner in which Hafeez and co. were brushed aside by India has sparked severe criticism in Pakistan.

Miandad said : “Hafeez needed to show more attacking intent with his bowlers and field placements once we managed to set them only a target of 130 runs. The key to winning the match was to stop the flow of runs if wickets were not falling so that the run rate climbed up and the Indians came under pressure. Unfortunately Hafeez failed to use his bowlers proactively and that cost us the match.”

When asked why he thinks Afridi is the right man for the job, Miandad said that Afridi is a more “aggressive and proactive” captain and the captaincy responsibilities could also inspire him to raise his own game.

Mohammad Yousuf, once the mainstay of the Pakistan batting line-up, didn’t shy away from being critical of Hafeez’s defensive approach. “With more aggressive captaincy and the right pressure on the batsmen, we could have made this total of 130 look like 160 for the Indian team but this didn’t happen.”

Meanwhile, reports in the media suggest a rift in the Pakistan camp with captain Hafeez and coach Moin Khan rumored to have a strained relationship.
