MSD: Wins tri-series in Australia by defeating Australia in the first two matches of the best of three finals. Silence and Smile

Experts: Can he replicate his limited overs success as Captain in Test matches?

MSD: Wins his first Four Test Matches as Captain. Unbeaten for first 12 Test matches. Silence and Smile.

2009-10

Experts: Can he win India Tests overseas like his predecessors Sourav and Dravid?

MSD: Wins Test series in Bangladesh, New Zealand, Sri Lanka. Draws in South Africa. Takes Team India to number one in ICC Test Rankings.

2011

Experts: His Limited Overs Captaincy skills have waned. 2 T20 World Cups and one Mini World Cup gone and yet no silverware for Team India. Surely can’t win the World Cup at home!

MSD: Wins the World Cup with a magnificent 91 in the final. Silence and smile.
 

Experts: He is the best Captain. The Captain with Midas Touch. He can do anything!

MSD: Loses to England 4-0 in England. Silence and Smile. Ahem.

Experts: His wicket keeping was exposed. Captaincy was atrocious. Who brings a plump looking RP Singh back from wilderness to play against England?

MSD: Silence and Smile.

2012

Experts: Can he make up for the England debacle by winning it in Down Under to give a fitting farewell to the seniors in the side?

MSD: Seniors fail. Everybody fails. India loses 4-0 again. Silence and smile.

2013

Experts: He can only win IPLs and CLT20’s. Cant handle seniors in the team well. India needs to look beyond Dhoni after 8 overseas defeats!

MSD: Wins India the Champions Trophy. With no Captain in sight for Tests, he hangs on. Silence and Smile.

Experts: Fine ODI player. Good finisher. But doesn’t have the technique to bat in Tests!

MSD: Wins first series for India in West Indies. Called too defensive. Follows up his 99 with 224 against the Aussies and sets the tone for a 4-0 whitewash and 2-0 against West Indies. Silence and Smile

Experts: Dhoni has shown what an able leader he is. Must lead in all formats.

MSD: Loses Test series in South Africa and New Zealand, where India had good chances of leveling series. Silence.

2014

Experts: Time for India to start grooming Virat as Test Skipper. Also, keep an eye on Saha and Ojha. Better keepers than Dhoni.

MSD: Almost gets India another World T20 trophy. India draws in Nottingham and wins at Lords. Silence.

Experts: Amazing to see India rattle England with the short stuff. Stupendous captaincy by skipper to show faith in Ishant and his short pitched bowling. Is it the beginning of a turnaround?

MSD: India goes on to lose the next three Tests. And the series with a score-line 3-1. Silence.

Experts: Dhoni’s captaincy can at best be called baffling. He must thank his CSK boss Srinivasan for continuing to captain India.

MSD: Silence.

Experts: Virat’s captaincy was so refreshingly aggressive in Adelaide in stark contrast to Dhoni’s in Brisbane. Who bowls bouncers to Mitchell Johnson?

Negative Captaincy. Maybe the right time for Virat to take over from Dhoni.

MSD: Silence and Gone.

Experts: Wait! Did MS Dhoni just hang up boots on his Test Career?

Experts: Why did he quit in between the series? Was he forced by the management? Was it the Virat-Shastri Axis? Why didn’t he announce it in the Press Conference?

Afterthought – May be, had Dhoni led India in Adelaide and with his ‘defensive captaincy’ had gone on to draw the Test, India would still have had a chance at leveling the series.  Just a thought.
