According to some reports, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who recently announced his retirement from Test cricket few days back, could still play one more game in this format. Dhoni’s role of captaincy has been replaced by his deputy Virat Kohli but the void left by him in the squad as a wicket-keeper is yet to be filled.
Back-up wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha is still recovering from his thumb injury and if he is unable to take the field in Sydney on January 6, then Dhoni would be called up to wear the whites as Team India has no other options available. Ravi Shastri, the director of the Indian Cricket Team team has confirmed that Dhoni is on a standby for the last Test. KL Rahul will be playing only as a batsman in the series
In that case, Dhoni will be playing under Virat Kohli and will be given a farewell irrespective of the result. India, who lost the series 2-0 will look to end on a high with a win in Sydney. The fourth and Final Test will begin in January 6.
