After two worrying losses, the Royal Challengers Bangalore roared back in style after defeating the Rising Pune Supergiants by 13 runs. For Pune, there is plenty to ponder as their death bowling looks out of sorts and they desperately need a power hitter. From Bangalore’s perspective, it was once again the Kohli- De Villiers show, as the two marauding batsmen had a ball at Pune.
Thanks to the 157 runs stand between the duo, the Royal Challengers galloped to 185-3 in 20 overs. Pune had a dreadful start as Faf Du Plessis was dismissed early and Kevin Pietersen had to return after facing just one ball after he experienced severe pain in his calf muscles. Steve Smith was smartly run out by Kohli and in walked Dhoni.
Dhoni and Rahane built a partnership, but they left things for way too late. Despite a few lusty blows towards the end, the hosts fell short by 13 runs. In the post match presentation, Dhoni admitted that he wasn’t too fussed by recent results. “Not fussed by the recent results. Yes, we have not played the kind of cricket we can. If we can take catches, it will be good blessing. There are quite a few slow fielders in the team; if they can take the safe catches, I am not too disappointed. In fielding, we have to restrict 10 runs, and in batting, we have to get 10 extra runs,” said Dhoni.
“We lost three wickets for nothing. Faf got out, KP walked out injured and then Steve Smith got run out. We had to build a partnership. We were relying on the big-hitters to play a cameo and the target could then look in sight. Few runs too many. It was a par plus score but I am quite happy with the way we batted. Disappointed with the loss but plenty of good things in this game for us,” Dhoni added, about the game.
Dhoni also hinted that one of Mitchell Marsh and Albie Morkel could fit into the playing XI. “KP’s injury can be a blessing in disguise. Reason being that he’s a big player but his injury gives me the opportunity to play Albie or someone like him. Puts in Deepak Chahar into the frame as well. It was always difficult to choose between Smith and KP. I have to leave one out of them to play an all-rounder. If we are not doing well, we need to strengthen our bowling. I feel, we have quite a few players playing their first IPL, and with more games, guys like M Ashwin will get better,” said Dhoni.
