In our series of ‘Numbers in the making’ articles, we bring to you all the exciting records that players and teams can get to their name in the ninth season of Indian Premier League. In this match, we look at the numbers ahead Gujarat Lions’ visit to Kings XI Punjab.
As this match would be the first appearance of the new franchise team Gujarat Lions, it is obvious that both these teams don’t have any history of playing each other in the past in IPL. But the players of both these teams have been a part of the IPL and here are some of the crucial numbers and happenings we fans can look out for:
Suresh Raina gets a promotion
This will be his real test as a Captain. Raina, who has been the Vice-Captain of CSK ever since IPL began, has got the chance to lead CSK only thrice. This was during the absence of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 2010, Suresh Raina captained CSK for three games and the team won, lost and tied one game each.
Therefore, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that Raina gets a promotion as he becomes a full-time Captain from being a Vice-Captain.
Suresh Raina to equal Sachin and Kallis if Gujarat Lions Chase
Raina on 52 instances has scored 30 or more in IPL, which is by far the highest for any player in IPL. Rohit Sharma is behind him with 48. But, when it comes to chasing, Raina has only 19 scores of 30 or more. In today’s match, if Gujarat Lions chase and Raina gets past 30 runs, he would equal Sachin and Kallis’ tally of 20. The leader in the list of players with most 30 plus scores in IPL while chasing is Virat Kohli with 27 instances.
Will Aaron Finch be 6th time lucky?
Aaron Finch has represented 5 IPL teams in the earlier 8 seasons. In today’s match, if Finch plays, Gujarat Lions would be the sixth team in IPL that he would be playing for.
Finch in his past has played for Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors India, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians. Parthiv Patel is the only player who has played for 6 different IPL teams so far.
One for All, All for One
While Finch might represent the 6th Franchise this IPL, Shaun Marsh will be one of 4 players this IPL season who have stayed with one team since the beginning of IPL. Other 3 players to name are – Lasith Malinga (MI), Harbhajan Singh (MI), and Virat Kohli (RCB).
The likes of Dhoni and Raina, who were with CSK from the start are representing new franchise this season.
Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo close to a 50
With 49 and 47 sixes respectively, Jadeja and Bravo are short of just one and three sixes respectively to complete their tally of 50 sixes in IPL. Whereas the journey to reach anywhere top is way too long for these hard hitters as Chris Gayle has already hit over 200 sixes in IPL.
This would be it for today’s match in IPL 2016 as Kings XI Punjab would face Gujarat Lions in their home ground i.e. Mohali. But be back for more interesting numbers before every match begins as we dig down interesting numbers only for you.
