Jasprit Bumrah

After 2003 World Cup, Team India was desperate to have a genuine fast bowler in the side which they got in the form of Irfan Pathan back then. His initial years were successful including the great hat-trick which he took against Pakistan. After that, irregular performances and injuries kept him away from the national squad. Now, after the retirement of Zaheer Khan, Men in Blue got the much-needed support of the young Jasprit Bumrah. He grabbed instant limelight while playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL which helped him to qualify for the national team.

In the recent series against England, Bumrah was proved to be effective as he took 10 wickets in the limited overs series. Everyone praised his slower deliveries skills in the 2nd T20. The 23-year is known for his unique skills on the field, which might give success to Team India in every cricketing condition. Here are some qualities of Jasprit Bumrah:

Perfect Yorkers

Limited overs cricket is incomplete without a power delivery known as ‘Yorker.’ Legends like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Brett Lee were known to bowl perfect Yorkers to the batsmen in the death overs. Similarly, Team India’s Jasprit Bumrah has the quality of bowling accurate yorkers which is a benefit for the team. His brilliant Yorkers in Australia and World T20 2016 were unmatchable.

Earlier in his career, Bumrah failed to bowl yorkers on a lot of occasions, including IPL, but now he has developed himself as a yorker specialist.

Consistent Pace

Jasprit Bumrah has the quality of providing consistent pace throughout. In all the matches he has played so far, he has provided his team extra pace in the opening spells and at the death. His 140 kmph speed would be an advantage for him and his team especially in the overseas conditions. Also, with the Champions Trophy just around the corner, one would expect Bumrah to bowl some furious spells on the hard surfaces of England.

Slower Deliveries

Bumrah had a terrific series against England earlier this year where he was exceptional in almost every game. His slower deliveries with an outstanding line & length did the trick for the Indians. In the same series, England’s Tymal Mills made good use of his slower ones during the death overs and created problems for the Indian batsmen.

In the upcoming Champions Trophy, it would be crucial for Bumrah to recreate the magic which he did against England at home series.

Calm & Composed in pressure situations

It has been a year watching Jasprit Bumrah in the Indian squad, and one would agree that he remains calm on the field just like former Indian skipper MS Dhoni. He has bowled some pressure overs in the past where he got success in most of them. Bumrah’s capability of absorbing pressure is peerless, and one would expect him to handle situations the same way in the future.

Better Line and Length

We have seen in the past editions of the IPL where Bumrah struggled to manage his line and length. Lots of wide deliveries and short balls were a part of his career, but the young lad has improved his bowling tremendously in the past 15-20 months. Now, we can observe from the past that his perfect length has troubled the batsmen on several occasions. He can be India’s one of the best fast bowlers if he continues his accuracy while bowling. He needs to prove himself on a bigger platform like Champions Trophy, which is just 3 months away.

Unique Action

India has not seen many bowlers who were known for their bowling action. Jasprit Bumrah is probably the first to fall in this category. His unique bowling action gives him an extra advantage to create problems for the opposition batting line-up. Team India would be hoping that their rising star would give them wickets at regular intervals in the mega event to be held in June.

On the other hand, Sri Lankan star Lasith Malinga too has the edge over other bowlers due to his unique action. He has also baffled the batsmen on many occasions.

Jasprit Bumrah has the potential to deliver his best performance when in need. Now, Virat Kohli & co. would be hoping to receive the best from his end in the much-awaited Champions Trophy 2017.
